New York Times:

Hollywood's glamour machine has gotten stuck between a promise that the stars will still show up at next month's Golden Globes and a threat that 3,000 picketing writers will chase them away.

Snagged on these conflicting assurances, thousands of party planners, stars, filmmakers, executives, celebrity hand-holders and others over the last few days have watched the industry's deepening labor dispute, now in its eighth week, bring its annual movie awards race to a near-halt. Indeed, whether the Globes will be broadcast at all has come into doubt.

I hope that the WGA gets what it is seeking by striking. But I hope that the WGA strike lasts long enough to drive all award shows off TV till 12/31/08 & the strikers make life hell for anybody who even thinks of crossing a WGA or any other union's picket line. If the WGA manages to kill every award show till 2050-it would be in keeping with WGA's tradition of excellence in the arts. Award shows are orgies of self congratulation for the mediocre & those without talent or integrity. Reruns of The Jerry Springer Show & Ellen making nice to get her dog back can fill the time award shows would have used. That would be better than reality or game shows.
Maybe somebody can find the old test patterns which TV stations used from the end of WW II & into the 1950'a & TV stations can use the test patterns fill broadcast time to avoid broadcasting game, reality, reruns & award shows. Test pattern could also take the place of religious programs that constantly beg for money to pay broadcast expenses & public TV stations begathons. This could start a new golden age of TV.

Since I never watch any of these "awards" shows, I won't miss them. Besides, who wants to watch a bunch of Libs giving "awards" to another bunch of Libs, and with really bad jokes to boot.

Good - I hope nobody shows up and it gets cancelled. Just phone in the names of the winners and spare us the pain of watching.

Unions will never outlive their usefulness with Republicans running the country. Some of those trades you listed are represented by unions and be grateful that many of the benefits you enjoy in your career are because someone fought for them at sometime in our history. Everybody has benefits of some type that Unions earned.

I, for one, am sick to death of these whining, spoiled, crybabies. I am a liberal, but I'm convinced that unions have outlived their usefulness. They were important when workers were forced into sweatshops and they physically suffered. On top of it all, how many OTHER people's lives are being negatively affected by these strikers - let's see:
gaffers
directors
cinematographers
art department
makeup and wardrobe departments
film editors
sound department
visual effects
lighting
cameramen
gripps
accountants
food and catering
musicians
etc, etc, etc...

The performers that tried to keep their staffs employed over the holidays are heroes - not scabs.
