Politico:

Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompson's presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursday's Iowa caucus.

Thompson's campaign, which last spring and summer was generating fevered anticipation in the media and with some Republican activists, has never ignited nationally, and there are no signs of a late spark happening here in Iowa, where even a third-place finish is far from assured.

This reality--combined with a fund-raising drought--left well-connected friends and advisers of Thompson Wednesday evening predicting that he will pull the plug on hype and hope before the Jan. 8 New Hampshire primary.

Andrea Mitchell must be in mourning today. Lately she has sounded like she was HRC's publicist. It has been Clinton all the time.

Fred I'm never one to enjoy the burden of transmitting bad news but, last night, while you were sleeping, members of the Clinton campaign sewed your butt cheeks together so make sure you carry at least a nail clipper with you to the bathroom.

I wouldn't count her out.

Do some research. How many previously elected presidents actually won Iowa? You'd be surprised to know that BC, GBSr., JBJr., as well as most others did not win Iowa.

Nope, Iowa is inconsequential. If history repeats itself, Obama is a goner, unfortunately.

Hillary's recent vote for the ridiculous, warmongering, neocon Kyl-Lieberman amendment was a wake-up call for all progressives.

I was a Hillary supporter myself until she cast that vote. A vote which prove that her 2003 Iraq war vote was no "mistake".

I'm now a dedicated Obama guy. I urge YOU to consider joining me in supporting Obama.

Yay!!

Let's have a funeral for hillary's ludicrous, plastic, scripted, triangulating, losing campaign!!!

I am a loyal, progressive Democrat who worked in an important staff position at DNC headquarters in Washington from 1998-2001, and before that worked for Democrats in the House and Senate.

And now it looks like he isnt going to drop. I guess he is hoping to pinch enough from the campaign funds to keep him in Viagra for the next 10 years.

Asked if there's any substance to this rumor, Thompson replied:

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Uh? It's seven o'clock already?

Given the effort grandpa Fred has put in so far, I'm not sure we'll notice the difference when he drops out.

This breaking news suggests that Frankenberry was actually running for president.

I think he was just angling for a VP position. What better job for a person too lazy to bother?

If McCain gets the nomination, watch Thompson's name float to the top like a bloated carp.

Thompson to AMNESTY-JOHN -- one pathetic loser supporting another pathetic loser. That seems appropriate.

Don't believe everything you read.

GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson said in an in-studio interview with KCCI-TV in Des Moines that there is no truth to rumors that his campaign will fold before New Hampshire if he doesn't have a strong showing in Iowa.

"That is absolutely made up out of whole cloth," said the former U.S. Senator from Tennessee.

Thompson said a rival campaign was likely the source of that rumor.

"Can you imagine such a thing in politics?" he asked.
