Is Marrying For Money Different Than Marrying For Looks?

Now before you think: "Hang on: is this going to be an article by a rich bloke off the telly saying it's all right for women to sleep with rich blokes off the telly?" let me explain that the person who first drew my attention to this quandary was a woman.

I host a show on Radio 4 called Heresy. It attempts to challenge received opinion.

It's mainly a comedy show, but occasionally a guest on Heresy says something which really does crash into the boundaries of what most of us believe to be the way the world works.

This happened last series, when the actress Fay Ripley, during a debate challenging the idea that money can't buy you love, said: "The thing is, sleeping with someone because they're rich is actually no less shallow than sleeping with someone because they're physically attractive."
