Speaking to Huffington Post and other reporters just hours before tonight's Iowa caucuses, Obama campaign top strategist David Axelrod said that, "He can't help but be optimistic about tonight's results."

He described the energy bubbling at the Iowa headquarters as "incredible," but refused to predict exactly where his candidate will finish tonight.

"We're in uncharted waters," he said. "We've never in a campaign like this before."

Axelrod expressed confidence that there would be an elevated turnout in tonight's caucuses, saying that the campaign expects 150,000 Democrats. That would be about a 20 percent increase over the 2004 turnout and consistent with polling information that projects a bump of young and first-time voters. Polls that show Obama ahead in tonight's race suggest an increased turnout would be a key ingredient to an Obama victory.

"It's not about poll numbers anymore," Axelrod said. "It's about the hard count going into the caucuses."

He said that he was "not nervous" about tonight's contest, adding, "We've done everything we can. We've put in a maximum effort."

"We've called through our lists and re-called those lists, and scrubbed those lists" so that the campaign can tightly focus on turning out committed caucus-goers.

Axelrod describes the current outlook of his candidate as "very serene."

Any white male Anglo Saxon Protestant can win for the Democrats in 2008. So why are the corporate fundings going to Hillary and Obama?
2 X 2 = a male WASP.

CNN Obama wins...

MSNBC just called it for Barack Obama. Sad to say! John Edwards is the only viable candidate of the three in the top tier; Joe Biden is the most experienced, and most powerful...and yet Obama wins the caucus. I can't see the rest of America voting for him in a general election. Most of America is backwoods, Ma and Pa Kettle variety, and they will have none of it. I have Olbermann and Blabber-mouth Matthews on now, and Blabby is interrupting the conversation and dominating it, as usual. He's such a pain in the butt. So, now on to CNN.

Okay... I'm sorry... I have something to admit.

I hope different candidates from both parties win the first four or five primaries.

I hope this causes experts and pundits from both sides to go through box after box of Tums as they try to figure out what the hell is going on, while everyone realizes that none of the experts and pundits have no idea what they're talking about.

I hope neither side has a nominee until after their conventions, during which all kinds of switches, flips and surprises make this the most wild and outrageous election season in our history.

I hope both conventions end in onstage Professional Wrestling-style free-for-alls that leave clothes ripped and hair smashed.

There, I said it. Please don't tell anyone.

illuminati says ...

"MetalIMC is foaming at the mouth again."

Is McLovin here again?
He was at his head exploding vein popping zenith earlier this week ... in the midst of calling someone a hate monger.
It was a sight to behold.
I think you were here to witness it.

So, is likability going to be much of a factor when those cornbread fed Iowans vote?

If so, then that'd be bad news for Hillary and Mitt. I do think Biden, Richardson and Dodd are very likable people, and smart. It really is a shame they're going nowhere. Hopefully, the Dem winner will give 'em jobs within their adm...

As far as the Repubs are concerned, Huckabee is about the only one who has any personality whatsoever. The rest are like BJ, JohnKemp, and RSU here on HuffPo: depressing people with zero personality. Well, BJ does show a little humor every now and then. The other two could depress the truth out of any terrorist.
