Finishing a disappointing sixth in the Iowa caucus and staring down a similarly poor result in New Hampshire, Rudy Giuliani has yet another problem on his hand.

Before Saturday's GOP debate, several members of the 9/11 recovery effort will be stationed outside the forum petitioning the former New York City Mayor to discuss the mishandled health safety issues following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The protest coincides with and promotes a new short video by Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films, which uses the testimony of these 9/11 workers to detail the dangerous conditions and serious illnesses encountered at the recovery site.

Still today, many suffer from violent coughs, severe asthma, and pulmonary and mental health issues. Giuliani, the workers note, is not responsible for their sicknesses, but he did not sufficiently warn about the hazards at the site and, more importantly, has done next to nothing to help the thousands who are suffering from recovery-related ailments.

"The hypocrisy of running a campaign on a 9/11 agenda and you have these people still dying and becoming much sicker then they were a year or two years prior is really insulting," Alex Sanchex, a janitorial worker, says in the film.

Greenwald told the Huffington Post: "These first responders are not blaming Rudy for being sick, they are asking why he has done nothing to help them since they got sick. They want to meet with him and ask what he is going to do to help them. They have tried to call and meet with him. Nothing. He who is Mr. 9.11 has abandoned the real heroes of 9/11."

More than 2,000 New York City firefighters have been treated for serious respiratory problems following their work at the World Trade Center recovery site. Toxic dust from that area has been directly linked to sarcoidosis, a debilitating disease that FDNY members now develop at five times the rate they had previous to working around the toxins.

Following the Democrats takeover of Congress in 2006, hearings were held to determine what went wrong in exposing these firefighters to such porous conditions. Much blame was laid at the feat of the then-EPA chief Christie Todd Whitman. Subsequently, several investigations have called into question the extent of Giuliani's knowledge and handling of the hazardous 9/11 site.

According to the New York Times, in the aftermath of 9/11 Giuliani "seized control and largely limited the influence of experienced federal agencies" during the clean up effort, but "never meaningfully enforced federal requirements that those at the site wear respirators." Moreover, the paper added, Guiliani "warned companies working on the pile that they would face penalties or be fired if work slowed."

But what has drawn the ire of the recovery workers is not what Giuliani did in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11, but rather how he has seemingly forsaken their plight in favor of focusing on his business and political careers. Giuliani, Greenwald notes, has offered no assistance to other New York elected officials in efforts to lobby the federal government for funds for victim treatment. He won't even meet with the victims themselves.

"The fact of ignoring those who sacrificed the most while he profits and profiteers from 9/11 is a scandal and is disgusting," the filmmaker said.

The remarks echoed those made in the film by Mike McCormack, a USAF Auxiliary Civil Air Patrolman: "After he left office, you may have to turn in your key to the city. But I don't believe turning in your moral compass and responsibility to people who trust you. That shouldn't fall at the wayside."

This is the third Giuliani movie made by Greenwald and Brave New Films. The first looked at Giuliani's decision to put New York's terrorist response center in the World Trace Center complex - a known and obvious terrorist target. The second focused on Giulaini's failures to upgrade the faulty radios used by FDNY members on 9/11.

Giuliani has never said much about this program:
http://www.slate.com/id/2108471/

The New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project was established after 911 to promote Scientology's dangerous and unscientific "Purification Rundown" on the backs of NY rescue workers.

New York City councilwoman Margarita Lopez, it was later revealed, gave over $600,000 to this useless piece of Scientology crap. She got to meet Tom Cruise! Woo-hoo!

"At least they're doing something!" the argument goes. Well, if subjecting rescue workers to dangerously long, hot hours in a sauna and feeding them toxic doses of niacin is "doing something," I suppose that's true.

But you may as well feed them castor beans. That way, they won't suffer quite as long as their livers fail, kidneys shut down, and blindness occurs.

This fraudulent program is still going on in NYC, endangering the health of that city's firefighters and rescue personnel. Worse, this program was used to promote a similar program in Utah, targeting police officers exposed to meth lab chemicals.

The establishment routinely pooh-poohs anyone hurt by chemicals. I am another who had to quit working because of chemicals in my workplace, in my case, a college. Toxic rug put in, with toxic pad under it. End of my career.

The toxicity at World Trade Center is sometimes acknowledged, but mostly routinely pooh-poohed. Because the dirty little secret is that we live in a mostly toxic world and we are all affected to some degree.

For some reasons the Rudy's of the world think they can escape the toxic stew by reason of their importance. To a certain extent that's true, but in the end it will get everyone unless changes are made.

This is the REAL pollution issue; global warming is caused by the sun for the most part.

You crazy liberals. It was NOT Rudy's fault. He was too busy spending time with his mistress to pay any attention to the 9/11 workers, who, after all, don't even make 100K a year -- so why should Republicans care about them at all?

Thanks for writing about this issue, I hope it gets picked up by the mass media & forces Rudy to champion these peoples troubles.

I live in Ocean County NJ & our local firehouse has had a few fundraisers for Charlie Giles a 9/11 first responder parametic, that is all messed up because of the toxic dust.

People forget, but Rudy's immediate reaction to 9/11 was to recommend suspending the upcoming mayoral elections and anoint himself Mayor until the crisis abated. His first action wasn't to help others, it was to try to subvert the will of the people of NYC and cling to the power his office afforded.

That alone should signal Giuliani is unfit for the office of the presidency. His continued apathy to those of us who got Wall Street, NYC, and the USA back on its feet in those horrible weeks after the attacks are further proof that he serves only the people who put money in his pockets.

JulieAnnie is self destructing and I think that's kind of too bad. He would have made an excellent candidate. His nomination would have cinched it for the Dems. I wanted to hear all about his extra curricular activities with Judy. I wanted to find out why the first responder's equipment was substandard. I wanted to know more about his little love nest near his office for nooners. I would love to know why WTC 7 was brought down. And, so on.......

Interesting. Giuliani has been fueling his bandwagon with the blood of 9/11 victims for some time.

Looks like it's starting to foul his engine.

One would expect, after all the astute truthful postings confirming citizens' impressions of treason in high office, and the strong redounders put upon the foolish and ignorant believers when they post propagandized or rote support for the traitors, that their continued disbelief of so many brave voices, which bespeakes of foolhardiness and an irrational denial of the obvious, would diminish. Don't sane people keep an open mind? Yes they do. The insane [a legal, not medical term] believe & repeat the same false thoughts in the face of reality and truth, somehow expecting the results to be different someday. Problem is, they don't get to live long enough for that someday to ever come. The sane cannot afford to tolerate the self-destructive nor to be afraid to use the word, TREASON.

all the people that came to the rescue on 9/11, dead or alive, will always be people of great courage in my mind. i think most of them knew deep down what Rudy was all about, an egotistical bastard. but that did not stop them. their compassion for people that could not help themselves was overwhelming. forget Rudy, and always remember the humanity that day.

If only the dead could show up also, Rudy would be back in the Hamptons.

Health care should never be a function of "DISPOSIBLE INCOME."

This will be a great opportunity for rudy to say 9/11, again. They're playing to his only strength (saying 9/11). He will see it as an opportunity. The repugs are that far removed of reality.
