William Kristol today published his first column as a New York Times op-ed writer. Titled, "President Mike Huckabee?," it begins:

Thank you, Senator Obama. You've defeated Senator Clinton in Iowa. It looks as if you're about to beat her in New Hampshire. There will be no Clinton Restoration. A nation turns its grateful eyes to you.

But gratitude for sparing us a third Clinton term only goes so far. Who, inquiring minds want to know, is going to spare us a first Obama term? After all, for all his ability and charm, Barack Obama is still a liberal Democrat. Some of us would much prefer a non-liberal and non-Democratic administration. We don't want to increase the scope of the nanny state, we don't want to undo the good done by the appointments of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, and we really don't want to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory in Iraq.

For me, therefore, the most interesting moment in Saturday night's Republican debate at St. Anselm College was when the candidates were asked what arguments they would make if they found themselves running against Obama in the general election.

UPDATE: Greg Sargent at TPM notes that Kristol is already going to need a correction -- his first column contains a mis-attributed quote.

"We don't want to increase the scope of the nanny state"

Either Kristol is quite the comedian or very delusional. Take a look at our Homeland Security state that the GOP has given us since GWB took office. If that isn't a nanny state, I don't know what is. Please don't try and say that the GOP won't increase the size and scope of the government along with spending. They already have. The Dems could hardly do worse.

Kristol is Rupert Murdoch's favorite neocon apologist. And Murdoch is set to take over the NYTimes.

What's the problem? Michael Medved or Michelle Malkin, what's the difference? At least he got the correct monogram. Admittedly, he is so far out of it, I should not have been surprised had he attributed it to Marilyn Monroe.

Although he is truly a despicable human being, I thought his initial column was rather innocuous and toned down. Maybe he has been reading the overwhelming negative comments that many of us wrote prior to his debut. Still a stupid move by NYT.

Don't want a nanny state? You mean like when they listen to your phone calls, read your email, get lists of what book you read or what middle eastern cuisine you like, make you take off your shoes and throw away your baby's water if you fly, inspect your bags if you go on the subway, interfering in public schools, locking up the only doctors willing to help people in chronic pain... you don't want that kind of nanny state?

He would have been wise to stop at "Thank you...."

This is the final nail in the coffin for the NY Times, and eventually all of the soon-to-be-obsolete MSM dead tree newspapers. Unbelievable that they would hire American fascist William Kristol, who has been demonstrably wrong about EVERYTHING he has said in the last ten years regarding foreign policy.

He and his Weekly Standard led the propaganda campaign that took us into Iraq. He should be tarred and feathered and run out of town, not given another platform from which to spew more propaganda! Why on earth would ANYONE would still be listening to ANYTHING he has to say?

My only guess is that the NYT is secretly trying to discredit American fascism (neoconservatism), by allowing a wider audience to read Kristol's demented agitprop. Why they would sacrifice the little remaining credibility of the "Grey Lady" to do so, I have no idea.

Look.....you have to view this guy and accept the humor that he offers. Remember...this guy is the self proclaimed expert on Iraq. He lead the charge for Bush in almost every action taken from the ill-advised tax cuts to the war. Kristol is about as wrong as anyone can be. I'm searching for the one time he was correct. Here's another example of his humor....he praised Obama for his charm but notes that he's still a liberal Democrat. The presumption here...that somehow, someway the Repugnant Party is going to lead the way to a better day. Let's see the results of just a few of the positions he's supported: Largest debt and deficit in the history of the world, staggering incompetence from an administrative perspective with the federal government. The war in Iraq and all that has brought us. Just to name a few. The New York times hired him because they needed a congenital idiot to stave off accusations they weren't complying with EEOC directives.

"and we really don't want to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory in Iraq."

It's not enough that the conflict in Iraq resembles Vietnam... they're even using the same old back of rhetorical tricks. Victory is always just around the corner, no matter what the conditions on the ground are, and anyone who challenges that wisdom is a defeatist who will singlehandedly lose the war.

It would be hilarious if it wasn't so effective.

The Times is a joke. Bob Herbert stated in his "1968" column that Dr. King was shot on April 3. Shouldn't the fact checker know the date from listening to U2? It is sad when Wikipedia is more factually correct than the Times.

Did Kristol fact check his Thank you Senator Obama for factual and typo errors? Zip off Kristol's outer wear and all you have is Karl Rove. But none of us are listening and none of us are buying it. And less and less people are buying the NYTs.

I am sure Obama's response would be, not a problem Bill-looking forward to your vote in November.
