Super Tuesday's Calendar Coincidence

Hey, campaign managers! Hope you've been checking your calendar, because you should know, Super Tuesday is going to fall on the same day as Mardi Gras. As you are no doubt aware, Mardi Gras is the day where college students across the country get rocked out of their gourds on Boone's Farm and engage in a little tit-for-tat bartering, where "tat" refers to strings of cheap, plastic beads. It's the audacity of grope!

So, if you were counting on "the youth vote" to mobilize on Super Tuesday, I'd start making some alternate plans, because if the "youths" do make it to the polls, they'll probably all vote for "Pedro" or something. The feeble and infirm will still probably get confused and vote for Pat Buchanan, so there are still things you can count on. Laissez les bons temps roulez!

People outside of New Orleans get drunk that day, too. College kids tend to get drunk whenever a feable excuse allows them to.

So - is this some conspiracy or no?

If you haven't been in the middle of the wall to wall of drunks at Mardi Gras you might vote on Super Tue. But, even if you stay sober, you have to see the NOPD clear a street of wall to wall drunks to clear a path for fire trucks, paddy wagons or meat wagons in 3 min. It is a miracle.

Louisiana holds its primaries on Saturday February 9 not on Super Tuesday. I doubt younger voters from around the country who happen to visit New Orleans on February 5 will make a significant difference in the outcome. There is also a large (though less rowdy) Mardi Gras in Mobile and Alabama will hold its primary on Super Tuesday. Should be interesting to see if voter turnout in Mobile is less than expected. In any case, if Obama loses a significant number of states on Super Tuesday, no doubt the spinners at HuffPost will blame it on Mardi Gras.

Well Jason, Mardi Gras happens in New Orleans. I suppose a goodly number of college kids might attend Mardi Gras, but were they the type who would have been serious about voting in any time? I don't really think that the rest of the country gives a rat's patootie about Mardi Gras.
