Christie's International, the auction house owned by French billionaire Francois Pinault, is gearing up for its New York sales in May with a Mark Rothko painting that it values at $40 million or more.

Rothko's 1952 red-and-yellow canvas, ``No. 15,'' measuring 90 by 77 inches, is part of a U.S. collection of abstract expressionist art that will be auctioned on May 13, Christie's said in a statement. The auction house declined to name the seller of the work, though it said the painting might set an auction record for the artist.

This is a perfect example of the rationale and justification for a steeply graduated income tax. It is also another reason why the rationale behind a national sales tax is absurd, they"ll just spend it somewhere else.

Well that makes sense. That's about 40 times the amount I made busting my ass working for a whole career.
The rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. It won't change when you got half of the poor people continuously voting to make the wealthy more rich and powerful.

Yeah, it's easy to see why it's worth 40 million. Huh?

The aesthetic appeal of his work and the value of his contributions to art allude me, too, and I am an art historian (although not a modernist). I don't dislike his work, but I've also never understood why it's so highly valued. Maybe if I saw the Rothko chapel in Houston, I would.

I know some snobs will feel sorry for me since I am so un-sophisticated, but I just don't get it. You or I or anyone can make a painting exactly like this. Where is the talent?
