The firefighting system in the massive $736 million embassy complex in Baghdad has potential safety problems that top U.S. officials dismissed in their rush to declare construction largely completed by the end of last year, according to internal State Department documents, e-mails and interviews.

Some officials assert that in the push to complete the long-delayed project, potentially life-threatening problems have been left untouched. "This is serious enough to get someone killed," said a State Department official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he feared retaliation. "The fire systems are the tip of the iceberg. That is the most visible. But no one has ever inspected the electrical system, the power plant" and other parts of the embassy complex, which will house more than 1,000 people and is vulnerable to mortar attacks.

Is it only a fire trap? I suspect it is a serious missile magnet as well. Does it have explosion detectors in place? The construction company has never built an embassy before... hope they consulted the right texts.... like "How to Burglar-Proof Your Home With Concrete"

From "The Colossus of Baghdad"

'As an outpost, this vast compound reeks of one thing: imperial impunity. It was never meant to be an embassy from a democracy that had liberated an oppressed land. From the first thought, the first sketch, it was to be the sort of imperial control center suitable for the planet's sole "hyperpower," dropped into the middle of the oil heartlands of the globe.'

When this article appeared in the WaPo, the first comment was particularly apt and so I'm repeating it here.

"RMB2 wrote:
The Iraq embassy should be named after George W Bush. I say we have Blackwater guard the thing. Halliburton does the catering. Put the George W Bush Library (an oxymoron if there ever was) somewhere
on the property. The embassy can have wiretapped phones and emails. A torched copy of the Constitution. A gas station selling gas for $7.99 a gallon. A Fox News outlet. A missile defense system system. A Court House with Alito,Thomas, Roberts, Scalia presiding.A (water)boarding house. Cheney will have his own hospital. The servants will have no healthcare insurance and make minimal wages. And pics of George W on every wall."

I added that perhaps the A/C should not be connected until the "science was in" on global warming since we wouldn't want to engage in needless expenditures based on some "liberal" science.

Ah, so they built it like the government built our levees. Good luck to the people inside there - you're gonna need it.

oh the price of imperialism. and we say we will stay until they want us to leave.

the sad part the most americans believe those lies.

in a dumbed down capitalist society you can tell the people anything and they will be believe it as long as they think they will get somethings out of it. like oil.

rape a country steal their oil and then call yourselves a christian country.

bet most of those iraqis are switching from islam to christainity. not.

Every day seems to bring yet another reminder of the ongoing and interminable hypocrisy of the so-called conservatives. They say they don"t want big government, but they reside over the biggest government expansion in US history. They say they don"t want government involved in their personal lives, and then they conduct the greatest assault on the Bill of Rights in over 60 years.

These idiots couldn't build an outhouse for under 100 million bucks. And, as easy as something like that might be to build, it wouldn't work. But then, it was never meant to. It was never about building anything, it was about stealing taxpayers money and packing Swiss bank accounts. That has been the entire motivation behind everything that the Bush crime cabal has done since stealing the Presidency.

How much of this has to be revealed before, like a black hole, this crime syndicate achieves a gravitational field of it's own and sucks all the participants down past the event horizon? Cause and effect have to kick in sooner or later...unless this really is the Bush Bizarro World (BBM), and up is down, crime is legal and law is is a crime? Seems likely considering that the Emperor's been without clothes from the getgo, and no one will tell him.

Ozymandias

'I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.'

Built by slave labor without the benefit of Egyptian contractors or supervisors.

It'll never last.
