Katie Couric Caught On Tape: Giddy, Swearing, Imitating Meredith Vieira

In November, video of Katie Couric mocking Dan Rather found its way to the internet via Harry Shearer's My Damn Channel. Today, she may have added her Today Show replacement Meredith Vieira to her hit list.

In behind the scenes footage from Tuesday, January 8 — the evening of the New Hampshire primary, Couric's first major election from the anchor's chair — Katie was caught saying, "My voice is so low with this cold." She continued, "I feel like," before looking over her shoulder and switching to a deeper voice, "'Time for the weather, and Al,'" a reference to the Today Show and its weatherman, Al Roker.

Vieira's voice was a central feature of her New York Times Magazine profile last year, in which Lisa Belkin wrote, "It's the voice you notice first" and, "It is a voice often described as having 'gravitas,' the very thing nit-pickers said Couric lacked during the days when her switch to CBS was still mere speculation."

If you can't watch the whole clip, at least catch the last ten seconds, where Couric repeats her Vieira imitation for the second time. Other highlights include, but aren't limited to, Couric complaining about equipment ("Is that a bad monitor on top? Because I look so much better in the one below."), asking for clearer note cards, admitting "I don't know much about Huckabee," obsessing over Cindy McCain's eyes ("They're like, light ice blue. And she had a purple suit on and I was, I mean. They were so intense. I couldn't stop staring at her."), and uttering, "Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit."

She is eternally stuck in an annoying pre-teenage, junior high cheerleader mean girl persona. Legendarily lazy, she can't be one of the "brains" so she grooves on "popular" and denigrates intelligence, diligence, and integrity.

Hate to say it, because I don't like Katie Couric, but BFD. She is irritating but then so many people are. I liked the Rather thing better, she at least seemed passive-agressive. You gott give me more to work with.

Wow! I thought anchors had to be well-informed news-buffs to even be considered. She's like the anchor's equivalent of our current President. "Don't know much about Huckabee?" -> could you even fathom Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, or Dan Rather ever saying something like that? Anchors supposed to know more than anyone else on politics, domestic, and international news. After seeing this video of Katie, hell I think even I could be a freakin News anchor.

She also seems a bit catty the way she mocked Dan Rather, her precedessor, and now Veira, her replacement at Today. That sort of ruins the "sweetheart" image I had of her.

Deep-- she's not

I don't get the fuss either. She's a real person and seems fun to work with at that. Are all of you confused about what TV is that you are shocked by reality now?

I guess to sound like an immature bimbo full of air with a stupid gummy smile is all one needs to make millions reading news in CBS.
She is doing to CBS what our president is doing to this country's integrity.

Katie, the makeover didn't work.

I never was much of a Dan Rather fan, but CBS should be ashamed of themselves for stooping so low as to hiring Katie Couric. Who gives a crap that a woman gets a prominent anchor job if that woman is so mind numbingly boring in that role, hardly anybody even watches?

Infotainment - "So can we get, like, better mikes? ..We're kinda like, like ... oh shit, oh shit.. she musta thought I was weird...."

Shows me why I never have watched her "do" the news. I watched as much of this video as I could take. She doesn't know a hell of a lot about anything she will be reading and her vocabulary is like, like a 16 year old. How can anyone like take CBS serious anymore?

The scandal isn't that she riffed on Vieira's voice or that she says the word "sh*t", as do most women who have high stress jobs albeit less perkily than Couric.

The scandal is that she unnecessarily dramatized a news story turning "The Pentagon put out tapes" to "The Pentagon also released *dramatic* tapes", as if she were some "news-babe" on a journalistically-challenged local affiliate station. She is an embarassment to all of the legendary journalists who made the national network news of early television so great.

But it's not her fault. CBS knowingly hired this particular woman to do the news ... a 50-year-old woman who has chosen, like Peter Pan, to "never grow up". She is eternally stuck in an annoying pre-teenage, junior high cheerleader mean girl persona. Legendarily lazy, she can't be one of the "brains" so she grooves on "popular" and denigrates intelligence, diligence, and integrity. Those attributes will never be linked with the name Katie Couric! So why not just belittle them.

More immediately however is the particular coverage of this by HuffPo. There was a wealth of subject matter in that tape, and the HuffPo went for the "catfight" angle? You do a disservice to alternative media.
