Obama: I'd Be A Bad "Chief Operating Officer" As President

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama freely admits he doesn't have the experience to run a bureaucracy.

But he's banking on the fact voters aren't looking for a "chief operating officer" in this election.
"I have a pretty good sense of my strengths and my weaknesses," he said today during a meeting with the Reno Gazette-Journal editorial board."I am very good at teasing out from people who are smarter than me what the issues are and how we resolve them," he said. "I don't think there is anybody in this race who can inspire the American people better than I can. And I don't think there is anybody in this race who can bridge differences ... better than I can.

"But I'm not an operating officer. Some in this debate around experience seem to think the job of the president is to go in and run some bureaucracy. Well, that's not my job. My job is to set a vision of 'here's where the bureaucracy needs to go.'"

Obama in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle: "Sen. Clinton keeps touting her experience, but has no management experience that I can see in her resume. It's presumed through osmosis, as a consequence of having been first lady. But I would point to this campaign, where I went from zero, starting from scratch, to compete with a legendary political organization 20 years in the making built by a former president. That's not an accident. It shows my capacity to put together a team and point it in a direction that I think is important. The skill sets that are required to move the country are not different from the skill sets that are required to move somebody across the table. It means listening to them, it means having very clear principles - what you're willing to fight for, where you're willing to compromise. And it means being willing to walk away from the table."

The whole thing is a stab at Hillary as the ultimate bureaucrat, and she failed miserably with the Bush comparo.

I, too think that the headline gives an impression of what he said that is not quite accurate and you can tell that some people neglected to read the entire article before commenting. "See, I told you he is unqualified." Do you people honestly believe that any of these candidates knows everything about everything? I want an executive who doesn't think he knows everything and is willing to pick the best minds in the country to get things done. He is planning to do exactly what Clinton (the one with the actual experience), did. He brought in the experts and he tailored his message to their strengths. The last thing I want is a megolomaniacal idiot who thinks (s)he knows the answer to the question before you ask it and who is unwilling to adjust their thinking. God forbid Americans actually vote for someone who is willing to be reasonable and look at issues in a complex manner. Shh.. don't say anything, but he seems like the type to admit when he makes a mistake. Oh the horrors.

After 40 years in the business world, it is easy for me to recognize the Obama "empty suit." He is simply the new bank teller who is GIVEN a job as bank manager because he is able to talk a big game. He is NOT able to lead or manage or even do the job of teller. Too late, the bank will realize its mistake. The fact that so many people fall for these empty suits is further proof that the people in the USA are getting dumber and dumber.

I have to agree with most of the comments on this one. It happpens to be just like the presidentcy Bush is running and look at what mess we are in. With the world in such a mess it is no time for on the job training. But I have to say I disagree with some because I think Hillary has a great command of all. Just listen to her speak on some of the issues. I don't see where Edwards has any experience either. He was a one term senator and he didn't do much while there. The one who had the most experience unfortunately was Biden and he is now out of the race. Hillary is the next in line with the most experience. With our situation in the world today we need someone who will take charge from day one and I honestly think she is capable.

HHHHMMM! This speech sounded very Reaganesque. All one would have to do is add something about 2008 being "morning in America" and it could have been Reagan's interview. We are living with the neocon consequence now. That is not to denigrate the Obama eloquence so evident in demonstrative plenty. This focus possibly explains the generalities on his web site. Are we to accept governmental programmatic and administrative necessities in the hope that he will hire this essential talent when he is elected?

That's just what makes for a great president. What a president should do is surround himself with the best, most experienced experts and give them the direction he wants the country to go. A president needs to inspire, to lead, to havae the big ideas that bring people together and move the country forward, but not to make the White House tennis court appointments. We've had two Bush administrations where a loony tunes president has put his highly personalized ideology into place with complete disregard to expert opinions and it's been a disaster. I think it's time for a big picture guy, not a ideologue or one who just jumps the big corporations directions.

This is probably the kind of quote that could be taken out of context-- and I wish Obama would leave it to others to say he's inspiring. "I'm inspiring!" Thanks for that.

I would like to see more balance restored to the three branches of government. The Executive has become too powerful-- running the country like a CEO (if not dictator) and the Legislative has become a mere Advisory Committee. "Good job, Prez." "Shame on you Prez (but keep torturing if you want."

I believe Hillary wouldn't stop this expansion of the White House's power. Obama might be more inclined to work with the Congress-- Democrats and Republicans-- and I don't see him as the kind of person who needs to take a lot of the credit for himself. So people who feel like they have good ideas won't be micromanaged into obscurity and will work that much harder if they think they will be given the credit.

You can have all the great ideas and oratory skills possible, but if you do not know how to get beyond rhetoric and implement those ideas forget about it. An Obama candidacy would be g rasping defeat from the jaws of victory for Ds.
I won't vote for him and I haven't voted for a Republican in over 20 years.

Heaven help me. If Obama is the nominee, this yellow dog democrat may have to vote Republican. I have seen enough of novice presidents and their screwups to not want to see another who needs so much on the job training. What a campaign slogan for the Republicans to gloam onto.

The way some of our CEOs have been acting in recent years I can't say I'd want one anywhere near the White House.

The government of the United States is a constitutional republic, not a corporation. Let's stop trying to run it like a corporation.

I want someone who is more strategic than an operational person (more CEO than COO). Great article on the best leaders was in the June 2007 issue of Harvard Business Review "How Successful Leaders Think".

Money quote from the summary "In search of lessons to apply in our own careers, we often try to emulate what effective leaders do. Roger Martin says this focus is misplaced, because moves that work in one context may make little sense in another. A more productive, though more difficult, approach is to look at how such leaders think. After extensive interviews with more than 50 of them, the author discovered that most are integrative thinkers--that is, they can hold in their heads two opposing ideas at once and then come up with a new idea that contains elements of each but is superior to both. Martin argues that this process of consideration and synthesis (rather than superior strategy or faultless execution) is the hallmark of exceptional businesses and the people who run them."
