Actor Sean Penn's days of writing for the San Francisco Chronicle may be over: The actor now calls the publication an "increasingly lamebrain paper."

Penn offered the critique in a letter published Tuesday, written in response to a tongue-in-cheek article that focused on celebrity interest in Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. It listed a number of potential matchups between celebrities and dictators or other authoritarian figures.

Penn objected to the characterization, saying Chavez is a democratically elected leader.

Chronicle Editor Phil Bronstein took the criticism in stride, calling Penn, "a great actor and a great director."

Huh? I lived in SF from 1991 to 2007. It ALWAYS sucked great steaming turds. It was NEVER a good news paper. It was never a mediocre newspaper. I remember vising in-laws in St Pete's FLA and being impressed that the paper in St Petes was better than the Chronicle. So, Mr Penn - where the HELL have you been?

Hear-Hear! The San Francisco Chronicle has turned into an AP wire service and a mouthpiece for the San Francisco police department. And the columnist C.W. Nevius has gone Dennis Miller on us. Whenever I see a front-page story on MLB and steroids, I quickly flip to the back of the front section to see what REAL news the Chronicle is trying to bury. Shame, shame shame.

I'd love to see a great write up of the Sibel Edmonds case, a side by side comparrison of the presidential candidates actual Senate/Congressional votes and positions, great information about what goes on in City Hall. What do I get from the Chronicle? Tiger attacks, baseball, and whatever self-promoter Gavin's dating at the moment.

Maybe he should try the 'kristolized' New York Times. Will that be better?

When they fired Harley Sorensen, I knew the paper was going to Hell. He was my only reason for going there regularly. I still like Morford on occasion, but it's been going downhill for years, and I've pretty much written them off with USA Today. Ok for lining the birdcage, but that's about it.

He's right. Chavez is a democratically elected leader. Also, since they laid off 25% of their newsroom staff and Bernie Ward at KGO has been silenced (possibly forever?), what the hell's next?
