Dov Charney, founder and chief executive of casual fashion giant American Apparel, acknowledges that he has appeared in his underwear many times in front of male and female employees.

And yes, on a few occasions during work meetings, he donned a skimpy garment that barely covered his genitals.

Why do so many Americans fear expression of sexuality? It is marvelous that he employs Americans and treats them well. He is eccentric and so what?

It is oppressive and un-natural for men and women to pretend that sexuality is not present when it is. The faux righteousness around sexual behavior in the workplace is yet another puritan heritage rearing it's unfortunate head. It should always be legal to propose among adults. It may be tacky or inappropriate for lots of reasons but not illegal.

Accepting no for an answer is a reasonable requirement. After a couple of "no" responses to a proposition is when harassment legitimately begins. Requiring a yes to keep your job should be illegal. But proposing and expressing appreciation of beauty and/or sexuality is not wrong and should not be considered oppressive or "hostile" because it is not.

But the pervasive attitude that any sexual display in the workplace oppresses people is bullshit. It is just as, or more oppressive to suppress sexuality the way it current is. This man pushes the boundaries of convention but he did not require her to have sex with him or touch him or be sexual with him. According to the story, she was fired after she started a law suit to suppress/oppress the founder in his own company. I don't see firing her as unreasonable. She is a malcontent troublemaker. American Apparel doesn't owe her a job. If her sense of propriety was offended, the onus is on her to get another job. She was not threatened or abused in any way that I could see as a fair or reasonable claim.

So if this person went to work for a dildo company, would some of you posters think it was sexual harassment if she saw pictures of penises at work, or models in the act of having their erect penises cast? Are you guys totally clueless?

Underwear is underwear. We all wear it or go naked beneath our clothes. It gets sexualized in the minds of people who think anything that touches genitals becomes erotic, too - but that's not in the underwear, which is just pieces of cloth sewn together, it's in your mind.

If you work for an underwear company, you can expect to see underwear. If your boss designs it, you can expect to see HIM in underwear - why should he have to hire a model every time he wants to see how a particular design fits a man's body?

If you don't like it, go work for a car company, or a bible publisher. There are ooodles of jobs for prudes in this society.

Having the boss appear at meetings in his underwear is in poor taste at best. I would expect that a company like American Apparel to make a conscious effort to separate modeling, fitting, design, etc areas from business meetings and office work. Certainly it would be expected to see some underwear or semi nudity from the models if one is in the appropriate studio, display or dressing area but management should protect workers from some who might take advantage or the opportunity sexualize the situation. I suspect Dov Charney has crossed the line in this respect. Still, the former employee bring suit will have a hard case to prove.

This reminds me of the lady who tried to sue the television producers of Friends, because the sit-com staff used foul and sexual language in the workplace. The judge threw the case out because anyone could guess that such things are discussed in the making of that particular show.

If this guy did some of the stuff alleged in the article, he clearly should be charged. But as for wearing undies at work, how is that different from wearing contemporary swimwear at the beach? IMO, both are too skimpy. But the point is that they are about equally revealing.

He's been thru all this before. He won't stop until his bottom line is affected even after he decides to offshore all of it.

Oh, there are lots of good stories out there about this cat. I didn't read the article, but I can only imagine that there is a mention of his fondness for masturbating while being interviewed by female reporters. Quite a guy. Maybe I'll whip it out during the talk I have to give at a conference next month.

Does American Apparel make sex suits? I prefer not to wear a suit during sex.

I wonder what it feels like to be slapped with one. Just don't hit me with the zipper.
