LOS ANGELES — Lindsay Lohan is about to see dead people.

In June, the 21-year-old actress will visit a morgue as part of her punishment for misdemeanor drunken driving.

"She's gonna see bodies. We'll have anywhere from 20 to 25 people in the class and she's treated like any other individual," Los Angeles County Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said Friday.

Lohan's attorney, Blair Berk, appeared at a hearing Thursday to report to a judge on Lohan's progress toward fulfilling the terms of her plea bargain. The actress was not required to appear.

Lohan has completed her rehabilitation and served 80 hours of community service with the American Red Cross, Berk said Friday.

Lohan was arrested twice last year on DUI charges and pleaded guilty in August to misdemeanor drunken driving and cocaine charges. She served 84 minutes in jail as part of the plea deal.

A program to show drivers the real-life consequences of drinking and driving requires offenders to spend four hours at the morgue and four hours at a hospital emergency room. Lohan spent the required time in the hospital in December, Berk said.

The morgue visits "include a walk-through of the service floor where autopsies are taking place along with the processing of the deceased. They also wind up seeing deceased people in our crypt," Winter said.

The coroner's office conducts 20 to 30 autopsies a day. What they see is "whatever's going on at the time, whether it be a victim of a homicide or suicide, a traffic accident or a natural death with no doctor," Winter said. "It's to show 'em what reality is."

It's surprising that none of us who want a pound of Ms Lohan's flesh haven't mentioned that our more radical mob desire that Ms Lohan process Ms Spears's body. The idea that Ms Lohan spend time working in an ER is very bad. ER's need experienced workers at all levels. Training a 2 day worker who won't return is an obnoxious, obscene waste of time for the worker who will break-in Ms Lohan by training her to do any job.
Nobody has called for the dunking stool or stocks for Ms Lohan yet. There is the jail in Az who makes its prisoners live in tents, wear stripes, etc. How about branding Ms Lohan with "DUI" on her face or cutting off her hand? We "pound of fleshers" have gotten too mellow.

Lindsey Lohan should fit right in. Everybody knows from CSI that all of the morticians are smokin' hot. If I had only known I would have taken a different career path.

I think she should be sentenced to live with a corpse, preferably one who died while driving drunk. That would straighten her out.

OK people, let me say this. I have been inside the LA county morgue many times to view autopies. It is an unimaginable experience, and it makes me have more hope for Lindsay's recovery than for Brittany's. The Morgue is especially characterized by it's smell. It is very pronounced, it gets inside your nose, even though you are required to wear a mask to prevent the transmission of TB, which is a big problem in the LA county morgue. The smell stays with you for several days even if you take a shower or do anything to get rid or it. It is like the smell imprints itself in the hairs inside the nose and simply refuses to leave for several day.
Then there are the sights. One of the reasons that young people, 18 - 35 yr old, have difficulty getting sober, is that THEY DON'T BELIEVE THEY CAN DIE, truly. I think this is one of the reasons that these are the age group from which we recruit soldiers. Actually seeing dead, maimed, dismembered, disfigured and especially young people shatters that perception. Watching as these young people are cut open and their organs and brains are removed very much humanizes the experience and brings home that these young people died BECAUSE of drugs or alcohol and that these keds are now on this impersonal slab in a very cold place among very disintersted people has a traumatic effect on those who view the process...and the smell is everywhere. It CAN have an enormous and indeed ultimately beneficial impact.

Misdemeanor DUI? As far as I am concerned any DUI conviction should result in jail time, confiscation of car and lisence.... it is basically attemped murder or assault with attempt to great bodily harm...
Working in a morgue is just a great example of the creativity required to get the message to drunks because the system as it is does not work.
How many on this list either lost a loved one or knows someone who died because of a DUI? And how many of those offenders killed somebody were repeat offenders who had their licenses suspended at the time of the offense and were driving their own cars?
The only solution to stopping the carnage is to get very, very draconian about this. NO excuses and no exceptions, no plea bargains, no time off for good behavior and mandatory sentences consistent with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, etc...
Society pays a huge cost for this kind of crime and the treatment route is a pathetic failure.
Actor, mayor, mom.... no exceptions.
People are going to mood alter and society needs to focus on 'harm reduction" by demanding responsibiiity and making a example of those who abuse the priviledge to both mood alter and drive.
