Bill Clinton Ignites Ruckus Inside Casino Caucus

Las Vegas, NV - Just minutes before local voters entered one of the controversial casino-based caucus sites at the Mirage resort Saturday morning, former president Bill Clinton made a surprise visit to personally lobby voters on behalf of his wife and to accuse her pro-Barack Obama union opponents of deliberately intimidating and misdirecting potential caucusers

The former president then entered the caucus site ballroom setting off a polarized, passionate exchange of shouts and chants between supporters of his wife Hillary Clinton and those of Obama, bringing forth charges from some voters that it was Clinton himself who was engaged in intimidation.

As caucusers lined up outside the Mirage ballroom, Clinton mingled with the crowd hugging whomever was in reach and avidly urging those present to support Hillary Clinton. He told The HuffPost that his wife's campaign staff had been "flooded" with complaints from hotel workers throughout the city that they have been "rescheduled" and "reassigned [by the union] and told they could not vote until November."

In dialog with the HuffPost, Clinton charged at least three times that the Culinary Workers Union, which endorsed Obama, was deliberately trying to suppress votes of pro-Clinton union members. "We hope there won't be so much of this that she won't be competitive," he said, referring to his wife's chances of winning today's Democratic caucus.

Immediately after he made his charges of voter intimidation, the ex-president then stationed himself inside the door of the caucus room and began to individually lobby voters on behalf of his wife.

Democratic Party officials had taken pains to make sure that no partisan signage or literature would be allowed inside caucus sites and that once the complicated voting process got underway no outsiders could have contact with the caucusers.

Clinton broke none of the ground rules but came up right up to the line as he lingered until the last minute and continued to whip up support for his wife's campaign. A Democratic official on site told the Huffington Post that if Mr. Clinton was still inside when the caucus gets underway, he would be required to be "properly credentialed or he would have to be removed."

Clinton's presence inside the room ignited an noisy ruckus of cheers and counter-cheers that divided the attendees. White T-shirted supporters of Ms. Clinton loudly chanted "Hil-la-ry! Hil-la-ry!" while Obama supporters in red T-shirts, raised their fists in the air and chanted back "O-ba-ma! O-ba-ma!"

Obama supporters were outraged by Clinton's presence in the caucus room. "This is a dirty trick," Mirage resort cook Maria Cortez told The HuffPost in Spanish. "He's the one who is trying to intimidate us," she said angrily. "No other candidates are in here? What's he doing here ? Just trying to pressure us."

Another Culinary Union member, Amelia Morland, also speaking in Spanish, said: "Everything's changed about Clinton. He's not the man he used to be."

Clinton was accompanied into the caucus room by long-time supporter and fundraiser Terry McAuliffe. "We were told that any of us could come to talk to voters," he told The Huffington Post. "We're encouraging people to vote. There is no intimidation," he said though there was no reference to intimidation in the reporter's question.

On the other side of the room among supporters of Hillary Clinton, several female workers from Circus Circus backed up Bill Clinton's charges and said they had been "pressured" by union reps to caucus for Obama but denied they had been directly threatened or rescheduled. "A union rep came to us on lunch break and said that if we didn't go with Obama we wouldn't be able to get a ride on union the bus to get us here today," said former union steward Judy Mollus. "They pressured us, but there's really nothing they can do. In the end the bus brought about 20 and five or six of us were Hillary supporters."

The Mirage site was among nine casino-based at-large caucuses agreed upon by Democratic officials to service hotel shift workers who would otherwise not be able to participate. Last week a group of plaintiffs associated with the Clinton campaign launched an unsuccessful attempt to scuttle the casino caucuses, accusing them of favoring the pro-Obama union of Culinary workers that staff the hotels.

But once the caucusing got underway this morning inside the Mirage it was immediately evident that those who showed up felt more than free to express their preferences, especially the supporters of Hillary Clinton. As a preliminary first count was concluded 153 Nevadans caucused for Obama and 178 for Clinton.

I find it very interesting that the bloggers failed to note that a union(culinary workers)endorsed a candidate(Obama) who did not have the support of it's members. Nobody except Bill Clinton thought that that was undemocratic!

What a bunch of nothing. The ObamaPost is so desperate to preside over the coronation of Obama that they will stoop to any length. Obviously Bill Clinton is supporting Hillary. What a surprise. The anti-Hillary rhetoric by some posters on this site is pathetic. They sound like spoiled children who hold their breath and turn blue. That kind of behavior is not good for their candidate and certainly not good for the Democratic party.

Good for Bill. I loved how he took the campaign right to the Strip.

Worked, too.

Quote from the AP: [Obama's] campaign manager, David Plouffe, was far more pointed in a written statement that accused the Clinton campaign of "an entire week's worth of false, divisive attacks designed to mislead caucus-goers and discredit the caucus itself."Whatever the hard feelings, Clinton told supporters they would fade by the fall general election campaign. "We will all be united in November," she said, as the crowd chanted "HRC, HRC." [end quote] ----------------------------------------------------------------- I have said this time and again. The Clintons and their surrogates believe that they can do anything and that no matter what lies, dirty politics, race-baiting, xenophobia inciting, lying, misreprensenting, amoral campaign they run, that Democrats in general---and Blacks specifically---will have no choice but to support them in November if they are successful in stealing this nomination. I beg to differ. I hope all intelligent Democrats of good conscience will vote for a change in the political party by NOT supporting her if she robs the public of a chance at an honest debate and a substantive choice for president. Don't vote for Billary in the fall under any circumstance; make a stand about your morals and your values as a party. Blacks more than others should always stand up for right because they, since inception, have been the true moral conscience of this nation; FACT!

"There you have it. Hillary Clinton is the rich capitalists' girl. She & Bill gave them NAFTA and free trade which has destroyed the working middle class. She's promised them more war in Iraq & war in Iran."

We forget, and it must be stated, that Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton,

Hillary Clinton, all belong to the same elite social class that enriches itself through their education, and acquired knowledge of the system,(Bill-Hillary made $100,000 in the stock market with a small investment-insider trading anyone?) and mastery of the rules of the game.

Sure, at Barney's: "We make Money, the old fashioned way, we steal it."

Enough said.

Kucinich has been silenced.

Edwards continues to be marginalized.

Are either of the remaining two worthy of our vote?

Isn't anyone else really concerned about Bill "acting out" again like he did while he was president. Remember, the New York Times reported that he blamed the stress caused by Starr's investigation for his affair with Lewinsky. And the New York Times reported that Hillary said that the behavior was brought on by trauma that occurred when he was four years old. Right now, Bill appears to be cracking under the pressure. All of us Dems. should be concerned about Bill's behavior between now and election day! Ironically, any Dem who chooses Hillary and Bill will be "rolling the dice" regarding whether Bill will enagage in more behavior that will ruin the Dems. chances of capturing the White House or getting anything accomplished if she gets elected. In fact, the appropriate metaphor might be Russion Roulette rather than playing crapes!

Oh for goodness sake! Marc Cooper is a full time shill for Obama, and I'm sick of the deceptive way he and HuffPo markets his campaigning.

I wittnessed directly the events and Cooper is full of it. He is a hack, pure and simple. He is simply not telling the truth.

This guy is not ethical and that really needs to be driven home.

The writers of Huffington Post are a pathetic bunch of whinebags. Good god what a wimpy-ass bunch of half-truth pumpers, Obama must pay well.

The Obama Post will do anything to discredit the Clintons. This is politics and there are shennigans on both sides, so I would ask for some objectivity in your reporting. Who will the Obama Post support when Hillary is our nominee?

Please, please, please, rein in Bill. If Hilary gets the nomination, Bill is a major plus, but only if he hasn't alienated many voters along the way. And it hardly adds to any argument that Hilary and Bill are a "two for one" advantage in the White House. That said, anyone who is an Obama or Edwards supporter (as I am), who bails out because Hilary gets the nomination, might as well just saunter over to the Republican side and sign a petition to make sure the next President names another John Roberts or Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. Because that's what we'll get with the Repubs. Guaranteed.

Your statement that -

"Democratic Party officials had taken pains to make sure that no partisan signage or literature would be allowed inside caucus sites and that once the complicated voting process got underway no outsiders could have contact with the caucusers."

Is completely UNTRUE, and you can read reports from people that were on the ground in Clark County in Nevada posted on DailyKOS, that show exactly the opposite. Hillary supporters pulled MANY dirty tricks to try and get her a few more votes... so some research and you'll find out the truth.

This isn't playing fair. OBama is getting double-teamed by two Clintons. It makes the Clintons look like trash, not to mention desperate to win at any cost. If Hilary wins the Democratic nomination and can't beat a Republican, we are fucked.

Clinton-V-Obama-Nv .Thank you Jon . Independents turned Dems "Never vote for Hillary"

Thank you for your thoughts they are surely needed at
this time.

Myself i know i am an independent turned democrat to
vote for Obama. I also got three Pennsylvania
republicans to switch to democrat to vote for Obama.
I am sure there are many many others like us.

The way i see it is many of us will "never ever" vote
for clinton. This morning i had to say to myself i
would rather vote for John McCain than Hillary
Clinton.

I know many other independents and republicans who
support Barack also will follow suit along with this
thinking.

Its not about the party and it definately is not about
the OLD TIME DEMOCRATIC MACHINE POLITICS THAT THE
CLINTONS HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH AND SO MANY
INDEPENDENTS HATE..

I remember getting the right to vote back in my teens
and i have cherished it and used it ever since.

I will tell you that I am an Obama supporter but I always said that if HRC wins the nomination that I will vote for her -- but with everything that her campaign and Bill have been doing the past few weeks -- I have to resind my vote. I do not want this "package" back in the WH. Why didn't this lawsuit over the caucus sites come up in the last 9 months that its been on the books?? They've known since March that this was what was going to happen and only NOW -- after Obama's endorsement they see it as a problem? If the union had supported HRC, they would have "strong-armed" them for HER -- I'll bet there would be no crying from that camp then. But you can rest assured that Michele Obama would not have been at a caucus site electioneering for him. Shame on him. Enough of both of them. Obama is trying to stay above the fray as much as possible -- but he does have to fight this. Sorry Hillary -- I would love to have a woman in the WH, I am an old bra-burning feminist, but it's just not YOU. I don't know who I'll vote for if she wins the nomination now -- maybe Blumberg -- but not her.

Is there any doubt left that Bill will be running the WH if Hill wins? But to folks who worships Bill, Bill is no longer the same WH Bill in days of yore. They have both become Bush-lite and feeding at the same Wall Street trough as Bushco.

I am currently sitting on the fence and just watching what is going on in both races. Frankly I think Bill Clinton is overdoing it. It is getting so you can't tell who is running for the Democratic Presidential Nominee anymore - Bill or Hillary. There is nothing wrong with trying to get your wife elected but he is totally overdoing it.Has it occurred to him that Hillary just might win without his constant shrill interference? GET A GRIP BILL! Sheesh!!

The commentary here is hilarious. Crying like babies because Bill went to go and shake hands. He didn't do anything but speak to people and you act like he was standing on their necks. My goodness, ya'all need a diaper change.

Caucuses suck. A vote should be private with no outside interference!

That's right, it was Bill Clinton inciting the "ruckus" in the casino caucus. It had NOTHING to do with the strong-arm tactics of CWU goons trying to prevent Clinton supporters from caucusing. Give me a break!

and Bush so I am for Obama and I am tired of of them[press] saying he can,t be elected! b,s, lies
when will they get the message that we are not going with there flow I refuse to drink the press,s kool-aid and also in the fall fire them all until our house and senate have all new names on the roster then and only then can we try too put our country,s house,s in some kind of order

Bill is trying to make up for his adulterous humiliation of his wife.

Do we really want another 8 years of this dance team who accomplished nothing significant for their base but did a heck of a lot for the republicans on Wall Street.

If he had worked half as hard to get Universal Healthcare passed the way he did for NAFTA maybe I could support them again.

But his greatest accomplishment was to help the republicans ship american jobs overseas.

Now Hillary is promising Universal Health Care again and an end to the war she voted for, are we really stupid enough to give them another shot at mediocrity.
