Abdul-Jabbar To Magic: Obama's No "Rookie"

Unbeknownst to him, basketball legend-turned-author Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was pulled into the 2008 campaign fray this week.

In a radio ad airing in South Carolina, Abdul-Jabbar's former teammate Magic Johnson endorses Hillary Clinton and suggests that her chief rival, Barack Obama, is an overreaching rookie.

"We won our first game on a last-second shot," the former L.A. Lakers point guard says in the ad. "I was so hyped. But the captain of my team said, 'Take it easy rookie, it's a long season, it's a long road to the championship.' He was right."

The team captain that Magic is referencing: Mr. Abdul-Jabbar, who told the Huffington Post that Magic has it wrong about Obama. "I don't think he's a rookie. He's served as a senator very capably, and he is very skilled in terms of his ability to organize and lead people. And that's what we need right now."

Abdul-Jabbar, who recently authored a book charting the lasting impact of the Harlem Renaissance, said he doesn't fault Magic Johnson for his endorsement. "Mrs. Clinton is not a bad choice, I just think Mr. Obama is the best choice."

But he noted, "Unfortunately, Mrs. Clinton has been at many times a divisive figure, and I don't think that's intentional on her part, but I do think that's the case."

Abdul-Jabbar's book "On the Shoulders Of Giants" addresses the legacy of key African American leaders (in a glowing book review, the Washington Post said the author had transitioned from "iconic professional athlete to astute cultural historian.") But he chose not to weigh in on the recent racially-loaded spats between Obama and Clinton.

Instead, he pointed to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's false claim that his father had marched with Martin Luther King Jr. as the "most outrageous attempt to use Dr. King's legacy in a very fraudulent way." He also described as "disgraceful" former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee's recent embrace of the Confederate Flag as a political issue.

Abdul-Jabbar saved his sharpest criticism for the Bush administration. "I don't think a country that practices extraordinary rendition and has denied people habeas corpus and has practiced torture, that is not a country I am very proud of," he said. "We need people that can reach out in various directions and make the case for our nation both internally and in terms of foreign policy. I think Obama's the right person to do that."

Agreed. Obama hasn't even been drafted yet.

KAJ is one of the smartest and most thoughtful athletes this country has ever seen. And I am sorry -- Magic Johnson is not. I havent read KAJ's most recent book but his previous one "Brothers in Arms" is excellent.

Verily, I say 'Oy!' Just you wait. Very soon you'll be getting e-mail telling you that Obama is being supported by a Muslim with the middle name 'Abdul'.

Your Savior Eternally,

Jesus H Christ

Obama is definitely not a rookie. He has been taking corporate money from health insurance companies and financial institutions and slumlords since he was in the state legislature. Some may not like that it is mentioned. Some may deny it. No matter. It is true. I don't see how anyone extracts hope and change from that but, if you can, go ahead and vote for him despite the facts.

Abdul-Kareem is an American who has embraced the Muslim faith who is supporting an American who embraces the Christian faith.
Lew Alcindor was a splendid college athlete in 1968 who conducted himself with sportsmanlike dignity. He converted to Islam in 1971 as many young, thinking African Americans did then. He took on a new name--Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-- and has lived his life with diligence and dignity. He has respected Magic's choice as he has commented upon it.

Freedom of religion and freedom of speech are founding pillars of American society. THe comments here equating Islam with terror or with disloyalty to America are disgraceful. And ignorant.

ITS REALLY IMPORTANT TO HAVE REAL LEADERS WITH A HISTORY OF EXPERIANCE AND MATURITY. I DONT FEEL OBAMAS THERE YET. WE NEED THE PROVEN LEADERS LIKE HILLARY, CHENEY, RUMSFELD, CONDI AND WOLFOWITZ. ITS HARD TO FIND LEADERS LIKE THAT TWO OTHER GREAT LEADERS WITH VAST EXPERIANCE ARE SENATOR MCCAIN AND LEIBERMAN.THROW HILLARY IN FOR GOOD MEASURE AND ISRAEL WILL CONTINUE THEIR TOTAL CONTROL OVER THE WHITE HOUSE FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER EIGHT YEARS..IF THE PRESIDENT LOOKS BEATABLE IN THE MID TERM ELECTIONS, HE COULD ALWAYS RECAPTURE THE MOMENTUM BY RELEASING POLLARD. GO AIPAC...

Abdul-Jabbar is just one african-american muslim throwing his support to Barack Obama another african-american muslim. What proof does Jabbar or any Obama supporter have that points to his ability to run a country? Working the streets of Chicago is stuff but working the halls of congress is going to be real stuff.

I respect Magic Johnson tremendously, but I am truly happy to have another sports legend and political minded citizen stand up for Barrack Obama. It's time for a new generation of leaders, shed the past and look to the future.

Hillary Rodham Clinton holds a commanding lead over Barack Obama in California as the Democratic presidential contest heads toward the Feb. 5 primary, a new statewide poll has found.

The L.A. Times/CNN/Politico poll was conducted by Opinion Research Corp.
I already voted for Hillary by absentee ballot! So should you.

Kareem, is totally right! I am waiting for someone especially Hillary to tell me EXACTLY WHAT EXPERIENCE SHE HAS. Besides receiving best actress for crying on a dime, oh but I forgot, she was frustrated. Kareem, has stood up and told the world what rational thinking people know, that Obama is the best person for the job. Hillary better give Bill a rest or he may have a heart attack! She is using him like a Georgia Mule, to pull her plow! I love it when he turns RED and points his knuckle at someone. He is Too Funny, especially when he is sleeping!!!!!! But there is a couch in the oval office hahahahahha, which he will not get to use again.

I'd love to see Kareem & a guy like Jim Brown get involved with Obama & try & raise up the black community to a proper level.

Kareem wanted to coach for awhile, but I think his true role may be as a writer and cultural historian.

He would still be impossible to stop if he got the ball near the paint.

Obama attracts people like Kareem, an author and honorable man who understands history. Hillary attracts people like Robert Johnson who's making big bucks by degrading the black community and Magic Johnson who committed adultery. Well, I guess that's how she had attracted Bill Clinton in the first place. Sad story, indeed!
