Clyburn: Bill Clinton May Be Damaging His Reputation

Representative Jim Clyburn, whose neutrality in the Democratic primary has made him something of a political referee between the Obama and Clinton camps, said on Thursday that former president Bill Clinton's campaign tactics may have long-term damage on his reputation.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, the longtime South Carolina congressman would not, as a member of the Obama campaign has, go so far as to compare Clinton's actions to that of Lee Atwater, the famed Republican dirty trickster. But he did allow the idea that the former president had sullied his image within Democratic circles.

"I think that may be true," said Clyburn, the third ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives. "I mean, he is speaking out this way, taking hits on Obama. A lot of times these things happen. What you say may hurt the other guy but it also may hurt you."

For the most part, however, Clyburn said he was not dispirited by the tenor and tone of the Democratic race. In the past week both the Obama and Clinton campaigns have engaged in a vigorous back and forth over topics ranging from personal (Clinton's ties to Wal-Mart and Obama's ties to Rezko) to policy (health care proposals and economic stimulus packages). That, Clyburn said, is just how campaigns go.

"I think the debate last Monday night, a lot of people said they were bickering," he said. "I don't think they were bickering. They had competing visions about what to do with the economy and health care. All three of the candidates had different ideas about that. And so, I think, that's to be expected."

What Clyburn did find discouraging was the way the Democratic primary was being framed in racial terms. The idea that Obama is becoming the "black" candidate -- whether it is happening organically or pushed by the Clinton campaign or the media -- is something the congressman rejected forcefully.

"There are more white people supporting Obama than there are black," he said, with a charge of emotion. "Now that's a fact. Just look at the numbers. Look at New Hampshire. How many white votes and how many black votes did he get in New Hampshire? How many white votes and how many black votes did he get in Iowa? Now add that to the black votes in South Carolina. There are more white people supporting Obama than there are black people. Now that's a fact."

The populations of both Iowa, where Obama won, and New Hampshire, where he finished a close second, are both overwhelming white. Moreover, Clyburn added:

"Look at endorsements here in South Carolina... John Matthews, Robert Ford, Darrell Jackson, three black state senators. They are supporting Hillary Clinton. I haven't seen a single black state senator come out for Obama. So is she the black candidate?"

But there was one crossing of race and politics which Clyburn felt comfortable wading. Asked if Bill Clinton was, as has become a well-known title, the nation's first black president, the Congressman said no: "Tony Morrison is a poet and she speaks in poetic language. I think she was being poetic when she said that. We are still looking for the first black president."

With the South Carolina primary just days away, polls indicate that Obama is poised for a victory. Perhaps sensing this or hoping to diminish the impact of a loss, Sen. Hillary Clinton left the Palmetto State over the past few days to campaign and raise funds elsewhere. In the days that followed Obama went from sugesting that his chief rival was writing off the state to arguing, in a campaign memo, that she was actually "pulling out all the stops to win in South Carolina."

Asked whether he thought Clinton was trying to mitigate her losses, Clyburn said no, pointing out that she had scheduled events in South Carolina for Thursday and Friday. But he did caution those Democratic candidates who believed they could win the White House while ignoring his home state. "You are not going to win the White House by avoiding demographics like South Carolina has," he said.

There's no way Clinton could do any more damage to his reputation after his eight years in the White House.

For me, who might have found satisfaction in a first woman POTUS before I disappear from this plane of existence, Bill's aggressive interference in Hillary's campaign is a massive turnoff. She should stand on her own...do or die...toe to toe with Obama. How else will she or any of us ever know if she was great or just her powerful, politically savy hubby's sockpupppet? Also, Obama needs to learn the wisdom of silence. What was the need to expound on the Reagon years, thus providing Hillary with more fodder for Bill's cannon? "LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS," O!

Where are the feminists now that Bill is coming to the fore? I'm dying to know how they reconcile their support of him with his history as an adulterer and letch. A vote for Hillary is a vote for Bill afterall.

Look this guy started this mess and acting all Statesmen like dose not get it for me, the Dems were fools to fall into this trap and he all but did endorse nod nod wink wink¦.I don"t believe there was a better way for the Dems to shoot themselves in the foot other than obviously falling into the Rove trap of the politicization of the DOJ and USA firings by running a candidate whose political patron is under federal incitement and will be on trial at the same time the Dems try to convince America they are no longer the party of corruption. Remebr Georgia Thompson and her trial¦¦¦¦¦¦.jeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzh stupid.

White Democrats never disappoint, at the begining of this whole process I said that eventually the same people who were praising Barack Obama would be the same people tearing him down in the end. Billary knew exactly what they were doing when they sent out their minions to make sure that no one forgot Mr. Obama is a blackman. Just like Susan Smith and Micheal Stewart they know there is a latent racism out there and they made a decision to exploit it for their personal gain. Barack bashing is all the rage among white Democrats who always claim how much they love African Americans, although one could never tell from the hostle tone of so many of these posts, not to mention the incoming fire Congressman Clyburn is now taking! Hopefully African Americans are keeping track of all the crap coming Billary are their supporters are throwing at them and make them pay the price come November. No Democrat can win a presidential election without the African American vote and Black people will never get any respect until we teach Democrats that they can't spew hatred at us a few months later expect us to vote for them. I for one as an African American can live with a john McCain or Mitt Romney presidency! "IF BILLARY WINS THE NOMINATION BOYCOTT THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS, NO MATTER WHO WINS WE LOSE."

As USMC 1980 posted, Clyburn is in the tank for O. Has he told O the cool it? BC is totally in O's head, witness Broder's latest column where he describes a panic stricken candidate totally off message, and spending an inordinate amount of time defending himself. Perhaps the phony "change" lecture upon which he has beguilded the media, appealed to younger cyberthugs, and hopeful blacks is growing thin.
Who started the race baiting which Clyburn is helping to perpetuate? Perhaps when they brought in fat Oprah, or when they intentionally misinterpreted HRC'c MLK and LBJ remarks, then festered it forever. Maybe it was when Mrs. O said some months ago when HRC was polling ahead of O amongst blacks-those SC blacks just don't get it. Maybe it was when O said yesterday that if I win, Ill get her votes, but if she wins she likely won't get my supporters. Maybe it is when the fawning media criticize HRC for showing softness in NH, but as O accelerates his whining about Bill, Bill gets all the blame.
The media is so bad. At the last debate Russert and Williams race baited for the first half hour, then a member of the audience shouted they were race baiting. We never heard a word about this. Of course, the moderators got their wish when O came in loaded for bear and spoiling for a fight. BC got into O's head and HRC spanked him. I believe HRC is fighting more steriotypes than O. 90% of the media questions are framed to encourage a food fight between HRC and O, then they lament how it is hurting HRC more than O. Now thats a fairy tale.
As O's backlash develops, the media is showing very small signs of coming around. Good synopsis of O's dealing with Rizko can surprizingly be found on Huff Post. A nasty 17 year subordinancy is outlined. Read it Obamanics then go into denial.

It is impossible to damage Clinton's reputation. He has done that perfectly already. Clinton is a liar, untrustworty and a letch. Period. That is the reputation he has created.

Can Clyburn shut up for two minutes. This guy runs his mouth, without knowing any facts, and ends up looking the fool.

Bill Clinton isn't hurting his "reputation", if anything he is helping it. Clyburn is so in the tank for Obama, it laughable. Clyburn needs to shut his yap, and go home.

As a conservative Democrat proud of the party's record on civil and human rights, I find The New York Times endorsement of John McCain and Hillary Clinton quite interesting.

On one hand, a war hero/budget hawk who is the only Republican candidate to resolutely oppose the practice of torture.

On the other, the only Democratic candidate who, until recently, supported torture (and by that name), is an budgetary earmark queen, and whose campaign has sunk to injecting race into the primaries.

(See the Politico.com story "Hillary backs off support for torture" [www.politico.com/news/stories/0907/6050.html])

That cannot be a winning hand for the Democrats.

The Clintons want to win in the worst way; if they do, they will have.

Sam Stein has called his own impartiality into question with the opening sentence of this post.

"Rep. Jim Clyburn, WHOSE NUTRALITY IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY !!!! has made him something of a political referee between the Obama and Clinton camps...."!!!!

Mr. Stein....with respect...you don't actually believe that do you??

neutral.....impartial.....even-handed....non-partisan.....non-aligned......Not an OBVIOUS Obama partisan

Everyone who believes any ONE of the above words or phrases applies to Rep. Clyburn with regard to his rhetoric and behaviour during this primary season .....say "AYE":................................................................................................(crickets chirping).............................tm
