Is "Canadian" A Racist Term?

Is "Canadian" the new black? Perhaps - that is if you're a racist speaking in code.

Recent revelations that the term "Canadian" is being used to replace racist names for black people have got a Texas assistant district attorney into trouble and have left others wondering what exactly it means to be labelled a Canadian in the American south.

Long derogated as weak-kneed liberals with lax laws and funny monopoly money, Canadians have carried a negative connotation in certain regions of America - but not as a replacement for the N-word.

Earlier this week a columnist with the Houston Chronicle uncovered an email from Harris County assistant district attorney Mike Trent who, in a congratulatory note to a junior prosecutor, used the word "Canadians" to describe blacks on a jury.

Maybe the next US President will be a Canadian (this could be to hard to understand for Texans, hint; Obama is African-American).
Ignorant United Staters are also called Texans.

United States (US) is not America. North America consists of two countries. Canada (on top) and United States (under). United States is not really a name for a country; it is a union of states. People from United States should be called United Staters. Both Canadians and United Staters are North Americans.

People from Mexico and South America are also Americans.

I guess that coded language appears whenever the words themselves become essentially banned. Bad behavior and ignorance...and bad humor..can not be legislated away. The only solution is understanding. Hating the ignorant does nothing to end the ignorance and actually perpetuates the hate.

When I worked in restaraunts more than ten years ago in Florida, I heard the term "Canadian" applied to African Americans. It was explained to me that it was because both are stereotyped as being bad tippers.

I wonder if that's the derivative and it has grown into a code word...?

Now that "Canadian" is a politically incorrect racist term, how should we refer to our friends to the north, the residents of the Dominion of Canada?

Hosers?
Back-Bacon-Biters?
Friends of Celine?

If I were black I would much prefer Canadian to some of the other names, I once heard a co worker refer to people of color as Mondays, if that's not heinous I don't know what is. I suppose the name really doesn't matter at all, even if the term was angel as long as the intent was to belittle its still a racist remark.

Believe it. I lived in Houston throughout the 80's and I used to party for a while with a guy who called blacks Canadians. If he walked into a bar and saw any blacks he'd literally yell out at the top of his lungs, "This f***ing place is full of Canadians". People would look around and a couple of time even came up to me and asked, "How can he tell". Interestingly, this guy was a highly educated immigrant who descended from a wealthy South American family. True story....

Only if you're referring to the Upa lumpa tribe!

Now that's racist undertone, big time!

I think its usage originally came from the restaurant business.

Canadians are notoriously bad tippers.

I know someone who grew up rural but was a quasi city-dweller in an integrated neighborhood just barely below the Mason-Dixon line when he first used "Canadian" as a more socially acceptable -- and un-rapper-like -- substitute for the N word at least four years ago...I think he thought that he had cleverly thought of it himself!

(Ironically, I had gone to college in Canada in the late '60s, and at least then, Americans were not thought of very highly - probably rightfully so, given the disparity in what Canadians -- the inhabitants of Canada -- are required to learn about the U.S., and how little -- nothing -- Americans know about Canada.)

"In his own defence, Trent said he honestly thought there had been Canadians on the jury and did not understand the negative connotation of the word."

If Harris County assistant district attorney Mike Trent is unaware that one requirement for being permitted to serve on a jury in Texas is that one be a citizen of the US perhaps he should be invited to resign his position as ADA. If he is at all qualified for his position he ought to know that there could not be a "Canadian" on the jury, since a "Canadian" would automatically be disqualified in virtue of not being a citizen. So which is it? Is Mr. Trent a racist, or is he just incompetent and unqualified for his position? In either case, fire his ass.

Huh? Are foreigners allowed to sit on juries in Texas-?

Canadians are helping the US in Afghanistan and this is what the name of their nationality has become an insult, how sad.
