WASHINGTON — Summoning memories of his brother the slain president, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy led two generations of the First Family of Democratic politics Monday in endorsing Barack Obama for the White House, declaring, "I feel change is in the air."

Obama is a man of rare "grit and grace," Kennedy said in remarks salted with scarcely veiled criticism of the Illinois senator's chief rival for the presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, as well as her husband, the former president.

Obama beamed as first Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy, then Caroline Kennedy and finally the country's best known liberal took turns bestowing their praise. "Today isn't just about politics for me. It's personal," Obama told a boisterous crowd packed into the American University basketball arena a few miles across town from the White House.

It was also about politics, though, and a rapidly approaching set of primaries and caucuses across more than 20 states on Feb. 5, with more than 1,600 national convention delegates at stake.

Kennedy's endorsement was ardently sought by all three of the remaining Democratic presidential contenders, and he delivered it at a pivotal time in the race. A liberal lion in his fifth decade in the Senate, the Massachusetts senator is in a position to help Obama court voting groups who so far have tilted Clinton's way. These include Hispanics, rank-and-file union workers and lower-income, older voters.

Kennedy is expected to campaign actively for Obama beginning later this week, beginning in Arizona, New Mexico and California. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of John Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963, will also make campaign appearances, officials said.

David Axelrod, a senior Obama adviser, said strategists also hope Kennedy can help blunt Clinton's charges that Obama's health plan would not provide coverage for all. "I don't think anybody believes that Ted Kennedy would endorse a candidate who wasn't thoroughly committed to the goal of universal health care," he said.

Clinton betrayed no disappointment at her rival's gain.

"We're all proud of the people we have endorsing us," she said in a conference call with Arizona reporters. Addressing Kennedy's criticism of politicians who pit groups against one another, she said she was "strongly in favor of getting to where our politics can be about the real issues, trying to find common ground."

So strong is the Kennedy family's hold on some Democrats that as word spread on Sunday about the elder Kennedy's plans, Clinton announced that she had the backing of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. A daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, Townsend lost the gubernatorial election in Maryland five years ago.

In his remarks, Kennedy methodically sought to rebut many of the arguments leveled by Obama's critics.

"I know he's ready to be president on day one," Kennedy said, taking on one of Bill Clinton's frequent talking points.

"From the beginning, he opposed the war in Iraq. And let no one deny that truth," he said, an apparent reference to the former president's statement that Obama's early anti-war stance was a "fairy tale."

"With Barack Obama, we will turn the page on the old politics of misrepresentation and distortion.

"With Barack Obama we will close the book on the old politics of race against race, gender against gender, ethnic group against ethnic group, and straight against gay," Kennedy said.

The Massachusetts senator had remained on the sideline of the presidential campaign for months, saying he was friends with Obama, Clinton and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, as well as several Senate colleagues who are no longer in the race.

Lately, according to several associates, Kennedy became angered with what he viewed as racially divisive comments by Bill Clinton. Nearly two weeks ago, he played a personal role in arranging a brief truce between the Clintons and Obama on the issue.

The day's political drama continued into the evening. Kennedy followed Obama into the House chamber Monday night for President Bush's State of the Union address. As Hillary Clinton and Kennedy shook hands before the speech began, Obama turned away from her.

Obama, 46, is nearly 30 years younger than Kennedy. "I was too young to remember John Kennedy, and I was just a child when Robert Kennedy ran for president," he said. "But in the stories I heard growing up, I saw how my grandparents and mother spoke about them, and about that period in our nation's life _ as a time of great hope and achievement."

Kennedy usually refers only sparingly to his assassinated brothers, John and Robert, in his public remarks, and his endorsement of Obama was cast in terms that aides said were unusually personal.

"There was another time, when another young candidate was running for president and challenging America to cross a new frontier. He faced criticism from the preceding Democratic president, who was widely respected in the party," Kennedy said, referring to Harry S. Truman.

"And John Kennedy replied, 'The world is changing. The old ways will not do. ... It is time for a new generation of leadership.'

"So it is with Barack Obama," he added.

Kennedy began by paying tribute to Sen. Clinton's advocacy for issues such as health care and women's rights. "Whoever is our nominee will have my enthusiastic support," he said.

But he quickly pivoted to a strong endorsement of Obama, who he said "has extraordinary gifts of leadership and character, matched to the extraordinary demands of this moment in history."

"I believe that a wave of change is moving across America," Kennedy said.

Rep. Patrick Kennedy, the senator's son, completed the family tableau onstage with Obama. The congressman said, "In times such as these, we need, as we had with my uncle, a leader who can inspire confidence and faith in our government. A sense that our government can be good again."

Fat Ted is bellowing for Obama. Obama has gotten his wish. Like Hillary, he now has his very own Fat Boomer to bellow for him. While Fat Ted never quite made it to the ranks of an ex-President, he is, however, the part-owner of the SOUL of an ex-President. So there is no reason why he can not drag the heroic image of John F. Kennedy, who so stirs the hearts of many Americans, through the muck and mire of this idiotic campaign.

But more importantly, Fat Ted is the Guardian of the Holy Virgin Caroline. The Holy Virgin Caroline has directly communicated with her father, who art in heaven, and she has determined that her father, JFK, who art in heaven, would most certainly be for Obama. And furthermore, her father, JFK, has also talked to God Himself, and indeed, the Holy Virgin Caroline assures us that God Himself would vote for Obama.

Unfortunately, God's legal residence is in Florida, so his vote will not be counted.

But getting back to Fat Ted, after complaining that it was inappropriate for a former president to be campaigning for his own wife, Fat Ted now explores totally new dimensions of inappropriateness. Fat Ted brings us METAPHYSICAL levels of inappropriateness! Fat Ted talks to DEAD PRESIDENTS and channels their opinions! Fat Ted is a MEDIUM!

Apparently believing himself to be the owner of a dead President's soul, by virtue of it having been his brother, he now feels that it is appropriate to drag out the heroic image of his dead brother to campaign for someone who otherwise shows signs of being a whiney little sleezebag.

I must say that I felt vomitous outrage at seeing the image of John F. Kennedy being shown at the same time as Osama, er, I mean, Obama. I am still wondering exactly WHO Barak Hussein Obama even IS, or WHAT he stands for, other than his banal and meaningless CHANGE mantra.

What sort of "change"? Hitler brought change. Lenin brought change. Even Bush brought change. So WTF does "change" mean?

The sad fact is that representative democracy in the US is an illusion. The corporate MSM picks the candidates and the hackable electronic voting machines are preprogrammed to pick the winners that will best serve our masters. We wind up with a "face" of the nation who will ultimately be co-opted by the corporate interests. The only candidate who could have withstood their influence (Kucinich) was marginalized. We are presented with American Idol types of candidates who are basically different versions of the same thing.
The firmly entrenched powers (aristocracy) that run this country are not about to cede power to the people (serfs). The grand experiment is no more. Democracy is dead.

IMO the Democrats in Congress and the DNC would love Obama to win so that they can have a higher degree of decision making authority over his cabinet picks and will be able to mold his policies. Obama is inexperienced, he will let them 'guide' him, where Hillary will not allow them to make her decisions. Of course Kennedy backed Obama..........he will have Obama in his pocket.

The Democrats are so foolish. I have become so disheartened after years of giving the party the benefit of the doubt during the Bush era- they finally show that they truly are incompotent, petty, and self serving. The "liberal" press I am sorry to report is everythng the Republicans have accused them of. They choose a candidate, circle around the and write everything from that slant. When the press is done breastfeeding little crybaby Obama we are going ot be left with a belligerent, unqualified candidate so far out of his league we are going to be stupeified. Democrats wake up! they aren't going to life line Barack as soon as a Republican is coosen as the nominee, can you imagine Romney putting up with the nonsense that Hillary has had to withstand? We get everything we deserve.

Yet another 'Old Guard' Washington insider comes to Obama, and he welcomes them with open arms. The level of hypocrisy is amazing!

Since we know Obama isn't about change, why can't his supporters get behind the Clinton 'perfection' movement.

Despite what all the Clinton haters on here will say, Bill's 8 years as president were damn good ones. Not perfect, but close. But now he and Hillary have the hindsight and the lessons learned to make the next 8 years even better. A perfected version of his first terms.

Think about it. Think about an important 8 year period of your own life. Think about some of the mistakes you made, and think about how much better you could make it if you could go back now, with all the knowledge you now posses, and do it over again.

Hillary and Bill have that chance. They have the chance to go back and perfect and already great thing. Open your eyes and realized that.

Lets be honest here! ..AMAZING the lies that are being told! Ted Kennedy for one said no matter what you hear Obama has been against the war from the beginning...hmmnnn lets think a minute....Clinton has been in the senate since Jan of 2001...Obama has only been in the senate since Jan of 2005....gee all the hard decisions were made while Bush was making up stories of WMD...and Obama was no where in sight for those votes on the war. He wasn't even a US senator til January of 2005.....by them everyone voted against the war!..... and Obama did vote to fund the war after Jan 2005

Ted Kennedy is EXACTLY what the Obama campaign needed at this point. Ted Kennedy helped John Kerry win the nomination last year and he will help Obama win the nomination this year. All the people that are complaining and making snide remarks about Ted Kennedy are jealous that their candidate (Billary) didn"t get the endorsement. This is by far the biggest endorsement that a Democratic candidate could get. Period. Bar None. End of Story.

Does Ted Kennedy take women seriously? Does any Kennedy? Sure, they're good to fuck (consensually or otherwise, in a car or not), but to take them seriously otherwise? John F. and Robert F. were never famous for taking women seriously, not for a minute. Why should Teddy be any different?

No way can Obama be on a ticket with Clinton. Hillary will not win without Obama, but the reverse is not true.

I'll probably get heat for saying this, but oh well. I support Hillary but can understand and respect why Sen Kennedy did this. He didn't like the way the Clintons were running the campaign and apparently told them so in very strong terms, and they didn't listen to him. So I don't think it's surprising, and I think it's signficant. How much, who knows. I like Sen Kennedy.

But I was listening to MSNBC Matthews and then Olbermann tonight, and I'm not sure who said it on whose show, but it may have been Andrea Mitchel--or someone else, but the person said that it began with Caroline Kennedy, that her children (teenagers?) told her they liked Obama, and they convinced her. The reporter said she and Sen Kennedy are close and she told him she was liking Obama, and her feelings probably had some influence on Sen Kennedy--not that it was the only factor, but the reporter said they are close.

In addition, when Sen. Claire McCaskill of MO made her endorsement of Obama, she was asked why and said her teenage daughter liked Obama and convinced her.

So are we seeing some large endorsements because children are getting caught up in hype or it's an "in" thing? I don't think this is a good reason to support a candidate for president of the US.

That said, I haven't liked the tactics the Clintons used recently and have emailed her website to that effect.

For Ted Kennedy to b ack-stab Hillary Clinton and endorse Obama, just because he is pissed at Bill clinton...is really an insult to the Kennedy name. I have always had the utmost respect for Ted Kennedy, but this low class move, tell me I was wrong to have held him in such high regard. Hillary will still win the nomination...she is ahead in every ST state except Illinois and Georgia, and Ted Kennedy won't change that. When Hillary wins, Ted Kennedy will be left looking as irrelevant as ever.

Are the Clintons going to support Obama if he gets the nomination? Or are they so mad that they'll let the Republicans keep this going for another 4 years and sit back and say "we told you so."

Al Gore can endorse Obama and I will think he is garbage to, I have been listening to Democrats gripe for years about George W Bushs alleged cocaine abuse. Obama has admitted to being a crack head, he belongs to a racist church and the democrats are ok with this, I"m through I am officially switching to the Republican Party if Obama is the nominee. PS Al "no personality" Gore lost the damn 2000 election on his own because he picked Lieberman, Bush"s buddy.

You know what is amazing about this campaign???? You can"t utter one criticism of Obama - because if you do you are called a racist! That"s the Obama supporter rant " it"s amazing. For those of you who have called Senator Clinton the "establishment" candidate " what would you call Ted Kennedy? But " when Uncle Teddy endorses Obama " then that"s OK " right?" Well, you should be aware that Robert Kennedy"s kids today endorsed Senator Clinton.
Now, if you want someone that was not establishment " that was Bobby Kennedy " not Ted. You are all a bunch of hypocrites.

You know another take on Obama accepting the endorsement of the Kennedy clan is he talks out both sides of his mouth at the same time. He slams Washington yet he is a sitting Senator, he slams the Washington establishment and the way things are done in Washington, yet he accepts with a smile on his face the endorsement of the ultimate Washington establishment insider and one of the main architects responsible for the pollution which engulfs Washington DC. Heck Kennedy is more a part of the problem than even Tom Delay was.
