On the eve of the Florida Republican primary, Sen. John McCain launched a robo-call campaign attacking his rival Mitt Romney that some gay rights groups say amounts to gay baiting.

The call, which comes at the end of a hotly contested election that could very well determine the GOP nominee, reads as follows [emphasis added]:

"Mitt Romney thinks he can fool us. He supported abortion on demand, even allowed a law mandating taxpayer-funding for abortion. He says he changed his mind, but he still hasn't changed the law. He told gay organizers in Massachusetts he would be a stronger advocate for special rights than even Ted Kennedy. Now, it's something different."

According to The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder, the robo-call was pulled on Tuesday.

In 1994, Romney did write a letter to the state's Log Cabin Club -- a gay Republican group -- promising to be a stronger advocate for gays than Kennedy. Romney was challenging Kennedy for his U.S. Senate seat.

But the timing of the robo-call -- launched the day before the all-important primary -- and the tone -- specifically the reference to "special rights" of homosexuals -- has raised concerns and suspicion.

"It's ironic that Sen. John McCain is using the same tactics that George Bush used against him in 2000; surreptitiously trying to exploit anti-gay prejudice for votes," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "So much for John McCain being above that."

"I think this is definitely an attempt at gay baiting," added Jon Hoadley, executive director of the National Stonewall Democrats.

According to many in the community, the robo call hit is not simply a timely attempt to scare voters away from Romney, but a reflection of McCain's true colors on social issues.

"Sometimes McCain gets a pass because he wasn't a staunch supporter of the federal marriage amendment," said Hoadley. "But he showed his true colors when he campaigned...to pass the marriage ban in Arizona." (McCain starred in two television advertisements supporting the ban.) "When the community is looking at McCain, they need to look at the true record he was adamantly opposed to one of the groundbreaking victories in 2006," Hoadley said.

McCain last year opposed hate crimes legislation that would have covered gays and lesbians, and he has vocally supported the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" ban on gays in the military. In a statement last May, McCain said "the national security of the United States" would be "put at grave risk" if homosexuality was openly expressed in the military.

McCain's supporters acknowledge that while he hasn't always been the most progressive senator on gay and lesbian issues, they say that at least there is consistency in his stance (as opposed to Romney). And they argue that his statement about Romney's position was factual, not incendiary.

"That is not gay baiting that is a statement of fact. I know people who worked for Romney during the campaign and left in disgust... because he reversed himself during the campaign," former Arizona Congressman Jim Kolbe, a gay Republican and a McCain supporter, told the Huffington Post. "Now I disagree with John on some of the [social] issue but at least he has been straightforward and consistent."

In fact, McCain's positions have not been entirely consistent. In 2004, he said he would not support a constitutional ban on gay marriage, calling it "antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans." Two years later, McCain told televangelist Jerry Falwell that he would back a constitutional ban if state laws prohibiting gay marriage failed.

These nitwits fall all over each other to be the most intolerant. The sad thing is that they not only get away with it but being a bigot appeals to a meaningful segment of voters.

In NYC, I can go anywhere with my partner without fear. We tend to forget that much of the country isn't thus enlightened.

Will McFlame appear at the soon to be April Convention of the Log Cabin Republicans in San Diego? He should stop in to kiss ass, so to speak.

Solmonese says "ironic", I say it shows Crazy John's got a good learning curve. Why are the Bushaholics supporting McCain? Because they see it as their last chance to make George Dubya look good before the hundred years war begins.

I don't believe that Mr. McCain has distinguished himself at all as a homophobe. This is the birthright of the modern Republican party. Some of them admit to having a few cocktail friends who putt from the rough, but none of them herald the rights of homosexuals.

Mr. Obama campaigned with someone who prayed himself hetero, or so he claims. Hillary the same. Most of these politicians who even discuss the issue are pandering to the homophobic constituency whose "legitimacy" has been fueled by evangelism. And it is disgusting.

McCain is the likely Republican candidate as I see it, and the sad fact is that the two corporate alternatives the Democrats are focusing on are both going to get their butts kicked in the General Election. If the rumor that John Edwards is pulling out is indeed founded, we are truly screwed. In this case, calling Mr. Gore. Calling Mr. Gore. Giordy

I'm sure they both HATE GAYS equally. Unless of course they have something in common with 'La Craig'. In which case they hate gays openly, and love them secretly - in airport restrooms.

McCain told televangelist Jerry Falwell that he would back a constitutional ban on Gay Marriage ("special rights" of homosexuals), if state laws prohibiting gay marriage failed.

And I thought Republicans/"Compassionate" Conservatives wanted "LESS government in our lives". But the "special rights" of homosexuals call for MORE government in their bedrooms. And the "reproductive rights" of pre-menopausal women call for MORE government in their wombs.

I for one will NOT stand for THEIR "MORE government" wedge issues!

Stay safe, healthy and happy,
Love, Loretta

Surprise surprise! NOT! This man is pathetic and as much as he criticizes Romney as a flip-flopper - he has no room to talk. This man is a political prostitute and has no shame - he is almost as bad as the Clintons in that he will do and say almost anything to get elected to the office he lusts after. There was a time, way back in 1999/2000 when the maverick label had a little credibility and seemed to fit - it was then you could imagine an election where McCain took in many votes from Independents and Democrats - no longer. He and Dole are very similar and both weak Republican candidates. McCain will experience the glory of the nomination but there is no chance of him winning the general election.

Katrina demonstrated to the world what the republican party is all about; ignore the suffering of your fellow man as much as possible so long as the numbers in your portfolio continue to rise.
The people of the south that continue to vote for these greedy jokers despite the ravages of the gulf coast is beyond belief.
Just keep a tight grip on your search for a candidate that "shares your values" which always translates into being a narrow minded Bible pounder! Go ahead folks. Vote against your best interests. And be sure to blame the gays while you're at it.
No wonder societal progress moves so slowly. Conservative = Regressive

McCain'll have every man and woman, gay, straight, a little crooked, nearsighted, 20-20 vision between the ages of 18 and 30 under arms before the leaves fall the October after he's innaugurated.

Sounds like bigotry to me: Every gay man and lesbian I know don't want 'special' rights--only the same (you know, 'equal') rights as everyone else. I've followed Mr. McCain's politics for some time now, and I've never known him to be in the least sympathetic to the fight for equal rights for gays/lesbians. Just because he wasn't a strong supporter of the constitutional amendment regarding marriage doesn't give him a pass--that, as he stated at the time, was a 'constitutional' issue regarding states' rights to decide for themselves. Mr. McCain is no friend of the gay/lesbian community, and I'm not surprised he would use us to 'bait' voters.

When his handlers started dressing Old McCain in crewneck sweaters, he complained that they made him look gay. As if!
If these old GOP closet queens start bringing up the gay wedge issue again, we sane people need to stuff Larry Craig up their saggy old asses.
Seriously, I don't talk about gay issues as much as these freaks do, and I am gay.
These ladies do protest too much, methinks.
