Curious and Curiouser: McCain Popular Among Anti-War Voters

John McCain hasn't exactly been vague on where he stands on the War in Iraq. He's not just for it, he wants to have it for one hundred years, and he basically wants to be credited with being the biggest supporter of the "Surge" and General Petraeus. Along the way, he's painted his primary opponent, Mitt Romney as a timetable-loving, war hero dissing, coddler of Islamic extremists. No one should have any doubts about the extent to which McCain wants to mong himself some wars. Yet, in an exit poll analysis conducted by CNN's Bill Schneider, anti-war Republicans haven't seemed to have gotten the memo:

Among those Republicans who disapprove of the war, nearly half voted for McCain, while only a quarter voted for Mitt Romney -- even though McCain spent the past few weeks trying to portray Romney as more liberal on the war.

As much as the McCain campaign has been stridently decried by Romney-supporting conservatives, it's not likely to be an issue they can make hay with, considering Romney's not pitching himself to anti-war Republicans. The news should cheer the Democrats, however, who will see this moderate support for McCain as poachable in a general election.

Let's be clear. If and when we kill the terrorists, the al qaida terrorists, the sunni terrorists, the shia terrorists, the terrorist men, the terrorist women, the terrorist pregnant women, the terrorist teenager, the terrorist elderly, the terrorist children, and the baby terrorists, then will we be safe and free? Did I forget anybody? Oh yeah I forgot the developmentally challenged terrorists, the gifted terrorists, the double amputee terrorists, the blind terrorist, the deaf, dumb and blind terrorist.
There. Are we safe now? Is our oil safe?
Is Farwell, MI safe? Is our freedoms safe? Is the American Way safe? Is Wal Mart safe? Is Halliburton protected from the terrorist babies? the terrorist mommies? Wait a minute I forgot the single greatest threat to America, the sissies, the terrorist sissies.

His supporters are as crazy as he is, that is the explanation.

Perhaps they thought since McCain has experienced the horrors of war that he would be less likely to warmonger.

Of course, that hasn't turned out to be true in the past, so why would it in the future? Even John Kerry, who was an anti-war protester during Vietnam, voted in favor of the Iraq war.

Of course, to hear him tell it, he wasn't voting for the war, only to give Bush the option. But that begs the question of why such an ardent anti-war advocate would want to outsource his Constitutionally mandated role to declare war. One would think that such a person would want the final say.

-shrug-

I guess all this proves is that anti-war voters are clueless, which is no big surprise.

The U.S.A sick. And people who like war are not only sick but mentally unstable. How can anybody love to kill. The planet Earth must be the insane asylum of the universe. And I guess I'm crazy for living here.

For the first time in my life I voted the democrat ticket last cycle. I did so because I wanted to end this senseless war that is draining the nations youth and treasure. The dems didn't deliver.

The war is still draining the economy, Bush & Chenney are still in office. The Democrats can't or won't get the job done. Yes, I support McCain. I don't think he wants to continue this madness any more than the rest of us.

Anti-War Republicans favor McCain?!? Were they dropped on their heads, as babies?

Or perhaps they have gotten so used to denial and rationalization during the Bush years that any dichotomy is possible.

If yiu have enjoyed the accomplishments over the last seven years of government by Republicans vote for McCain. Think of what another four years of Republican rule can do for us. Aren't we much better off than seven years ago?

I voted for Ron Paul, but I do understand the idea of being anti war and supporting McCain. No more BUSH! Romney and Bush both avoided Vietnam at least McCain is anti torture and could pull a Nixon and get the troops out. At least he understands that while the military is a noble thing, it is noble while it is defending the lives and freedom of its citizens. At least McCain believes this.

No one with any education anywhere in the world thinks the US involvement in Vietnam was anything other than shameful, a devastation wreaked upon a pathetic population for purposes entirely political in the US and France. But since the euphoria of the l991 war everybody wanted to get behind the military again despite what the did to our young men in Nam, so it was 'a noble cause' in Reagan's insane claim. We can forgive those who defend the nobility of those who served, not those who sacrifice such profound moral truth as the wrongness of that cause to their own psychological comfort. McCain needs a dose of real anti-war sentiment on the order of Nuremberg.

Clearly, they want McCain to be the nominee because they know he can't win.

More proof as to why Rush, Coulter and Beck are claiming to be such anti-McCainers...

For the real reason why they're making these statements go to:

Looks like the anti-war Republicans are just as stupid as the pro-war Republicans if they support McCain.

Sure there are lots of anti-war Republicans. You can usually find them at vegetarian pig roasts or at pedophelia summer camp.

Didn't people listen to McCain ? He not only will continue the occupation of Iraq but he promised more wars. He just didn't say what countries would be our next victims.

"Among those Republicans who disapprove of the war, nearly half voted for McCain"

You mean John "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" McCain?

or

John "100 years in Iraq" McCain?

The only anti-war candidate still running is Ron Paul.

It is disappointing that there is not futher analysis of the intentions of these Republicans voting for McCain while professing anti-war sentiments. Were they dyed-in-the-wool Republicans who felt compelled to select the best Republican on the roster regardless of his position of the war? Are they voting for McCain to continue Republican control of the White House? Did they consider voting for Ron Paul to express their opposition to the war? Would these voters ever vote for a Democrat? Inquiring minds want to know.

Apparently either someone asked an ambiguous question on a poll, or someone a little less than intelligent is misinterpreting the results.

If you substitute "anti war" with "those who disapprove of how Bush handled the war" it all makes much more sense. The fact that someone would actually believe that anti-war people would vote for McCain is laughable at best. I wonder sometimes if people are so diluted by partisan politics that they are unable to make logical judgments.

People are voting for McCain because he was right about the surge, because he is right about torture, and because they believe his experience will make him a better commander in chief.

4000 American dead (at least), tens of thousands maimed for life, up to a million Iraqis dead, millions homeless and exiled. That's a good anti-war scorecard I'd say. Too many Americans are totally uninformed, deluded, lazy, or just plain stupid. Just because he has an "R" after his name? I weep.
