Obama Camp Claims Win Among Super Tuesday Delegates

Politico   |  Mike Allen   |   February 6, 2008 10:32 AM

stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust

The Politico reports:

In a surprise twist after a chaotic Super Tuesday, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) passed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in network tallies of the number of delegates the candidates racked up last night.

The Obama camp projects topping Clinton by nine delegates, 845 to 836. NBC News, which is projecting delegates based on the Democratic Party's complex formula, figures Obama will wind up with 840 to 849 delegates, versus 829 to 838 for Clinton.

AP has more on Obama's press conference:

Sen. Barack Obama predicted Wednesday that Republicans will have a dump truck full of dirt to unload on Hillary Rodham Clinton if the former first lady wins the Democratic presidential nomination, and said he offers the party its best hope of winning the White House this fall.

At a news conference on the morning after Super Tuesday, Obama offered some pointed advice to members of Congress and other party leaders who will attend the national convention this summer as delegates not chosen in primaries or caucuses.

He said that if he winds up winning more delegates in voting than the former first lady, they "would have to think long and hard about how they approach the nomination when the people they claim to represent have said, 'Obama's our guy,'" he said.

The Illinois senator won primaries and caucuses in 13 states on Tuesday, while Clinton won eight and American Samoa. Obama and Clinton were in a tight race in New Mexico.

Obama said he had won a majority of the 1,681 delegates at stake, although The Associated Press tally showed several hundred yet to be allocated.

I don't think anything would make either side of this contest angrier and more disheartened than losing the nomination in a behind closed doors process. Supporters of a candidate who loses the nomination in this way will be justifiably angry and the party will lose some of those voters.

The more open the process, the more civilly it is conducted, the more average voters will accept the result. Howard Dean needs to worry less about entrenched interests throwing hissy fits and more about openness. (Not to mention that people are less likely to throw hissy fits out in the open).

I'm not thrilled with the role of the super delegates, the majority of which are not elected officials. However, their role is already established. If they make their votes publically, that will do.

Dean's announcement that a close contest would be bad for the party is stupid. That's what he has. Sometimes decisions are split down the middle. This is not the first time and it won't be the last. Every system should be designed to address this possibility. Let people see how close the contest is. Basketball games, even tournaments, can be won by a single point at the end of the game. If you have two strong candidates there is no reason the contest shouldn't be close.

Let's not pretend that the contest is not close. Let's just have an open and fair way of deciding the close contest. Everyone understands that only one candidate will emerge the party candidate.

That's the point of democracy: faith in process.

I have to tell you. This is Crap. What numbers are you looking at. At the same time you are running the numbers showing him winning. CNN is showing numbers the he is not. I call that, finding another way to win, when you have lost. Obama has done that in every lost contest in every state. If he is winning the total without superdelegates he quotes that one, and makes a big deal out of one or two. If he finds someplace he is winning in super delegates, he brags on that one. Where is the story that Hillary is up by 20 or what ever. Did not happen did it.

Beware of electing a person President who always has to win. That particularly does not bode well in International negotiations. Remember Bush indicated we were winning for a long time.

So Huffington Press is Pro Obama. How much longer does this continue. You should be ashamed of yourself for being so slanted.

But then, the person who set this up, use to be Republican. I wonder if they really have ever change, or are trying to put another Democrat (In sheep clothing Republican) (Bush) in the White House.

I don't know how many times the lady can win, and you still call it a win for Obama.

That hype about McCain being "liberal" or even "moderate" is just that- it's MSM and Republican propaganda to mislead a very easily misled public into believing that McCain is "reasonable" and "openminded." Trust me this guy is the friggin wackiest ,most closeminded nutjob in a collection of Republican nutjobs. The only thing some conservatives are a little pissed about is his current lack of commitment for tax cuts- but don't worry that will change. Republicans and the media want the nation to believe that Hillary is a shoo-in becuase McCain has lost much of his base. Bullshit. Hillary Clinton is either outright unelectable or she will have a very, very tough fight against the Republicans. Brace yourself- if you think Bush was bad, wait'll you see what happens when this demented fool is made commander-in-chief.

My two white sons who have never really been interested in politics until now and who strongly support Obama tell me that if Hillary is the nominee - they will not vote in the general. This is against my protests I might add.

I think however this is an indicator of the mood of the young voter at this time and it is something that should not be ignored by the leaders of the party.

I can not stand his arogance. Telling Superdelagates who they can and can not vote for. However, does that mean he is going to cede the kennedy clan(Ted Kennedy because HRC won MASS)Maria Shriver because HRC won California. Let us not forget about Al Gore who lives in TN. Theres been a lot of talk about an endorsement.. So It automatically goes to HRC because she won TN, thats what Obama said. The people of those states have spoken and said Resoundingly She's our gal. Oh and lets not forget about John Kerry, Deval Patrick, Rep. Kilpatrick, just to name a few.

So Dean said that he'll call the two candidates, Hillary and Obama in and bully them into an agreement before the convention. Let's see how this conversation would go:

Look Sen, you have the best campaign staff, you raise about $30m a month, you have more committed delegates. In addition, you are attracting more new voters than ever, you're attracting young voters who would be apt to stay with the Democratic party and you're filling stadiums as never before, not Reagan, not George Bush nor Bill Clinton ever attracted crowds like you have.

Having said that Barack, I want you to run as Hillary's VP so that you could raise money and wipe out Hillary's debt. I'm doing you a big favor here Barack, I'm making Hillary put you on the ticket. What do you say to that, Barack?

I suggest all who want to read some "facts" go to the Daily Mail and check out the Hitchens article on Sen. Obama. No MSM in the USA will print this kind of information. Tell me after you read this who earned your donation and your vote.

FISA UPDATE!

Remembering that the Reactionaries have half the seats in the Senate, it is not surprising that things are not going well.

The Rethugs are obstructing by blocking not only the amendments that would make the Intelligence bill even remotely palatable, but they are obstructing the Stimulus Package. The goal of all this is to force the Senate to vote on FISA just before the expiration of PAA in a few days, and give the House no time to consider the bullshit Senate bill in conference committee.

More details at Daily Kos:

FISA Fight: White House temper tantrum by mcjoan Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 09:13:17 AM PSTThe Republican shenanigans on filibustering the stimulus package in order to delay consideration of the FISA fix now seems to have been orchestrated from the White House, if you could judge by a letter (pdf) AG Mukasey and DNI McConnell sent to Reid yesterday.See full article at: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/6/121113/6419/454/451096

FISA Fight: Taking it to the House by mcjoan Tue Feb 05, 2008 at 12:58:33 PM PSTYesterday's Republican shenanigans, that are continuing today as they filibuster that economic stimulus package that was such a high priority, highlight the importance of keeping the House strong on holding the line to keep their FISA legislation, the RESTORE Act, the base bill as they go to conference.See the whole article at: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/5/155323/6199/90/450451

Action items: Contact your own Senators and also this list of Senators (see the articles linked above) likely to be persuadable. Tell them (1) NO on telco amnesty, (2) NO basket warrants or reverse targeting, (3) sequestration of illegally harvested evidence, (4) make FISA the exclusive means of surveillance, and (5) vote for a 4 year sunset.

Take action! Call and write!

On another subject: ON CABLE - CNN's Tuesday coverage was like a three-ring circus. Too many talking heads. I will give props to Anderson Cooper for keeping things sensible and to Campbell Brown for her insights. But Carl Bernstein needs to retire. And will somebody calm down Wolfie.

On FNC, I was impressed with the two-man team of Chris Wallace and Karl Rove. I now fully understand how Bush won 2 terms. Rove is a genius. The Dems should learn from what he said. He had interesting things to say.

MSNBC had Keith O., Tom B., and Rachel M., all good, smart, clearheaded. Alas, MSNBC also had the Hillary-hating idiot Chris Matthews, who now seems not even to know how television works. Hey Chris, when the GOP chair is talking, the way the satellite works, you have to let him answer his questions before the time delay and your overlapping yammering drives us nuts.

ON BROADCAST - Katie C. and her CBS team were excellent. At ABC, Diane Sawyer is almost as much of an empty suit as Obama is. She needs never to stand over a short guy sitting. Charlie Gibson was good, especially in his chats with GS.

As a left-leaning Independent, Obama's arrogance has convinced me that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES will I vote for him.

Let me see - Hillary can't have Bill, but Obama can have that egomaniac Oprah, who believes in all that touchy-feely baloney? What are we gonna do, share crystals with the baddies?

Obama has a worthless legislative track record, when he actually summons the energy to vote in Congress. Same stunt he pulled in Illinois. The guy has ZERO major policy addresses in his history and ZERO important position papers published in vital journals.

His wife has a ring in his nose. He compares himself to JFK, which may be true since JFK didn't do much of anything as president either, except blow the chance to remove Castro. JFK is famous for "what if," not what he did.

Obama would be a disastrous president. John Edwards, my first choice, would have made a great president because he really cares about health care and the economy.

Hillary had the guts to tackle health care as first lady. Obama REFUSES TO ACCEPT THE NOTION OF UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE.

As for those web-obsessed college students who are glorifying style over substance. Gee, Barack's young. He's this, he's that.

In reality, he's too far left to run a centrist country.

Truth be told, I'll tell you what Obama is. He's the Eugene McCarthy of 2008.

Beware Democrats. Don't allow this train wreck of Obama and Oprah and Teddy to take this country into Feel-Good emptiness.

Obama doesn't have it. Edwards has it. Hillary has it. Plus, she has a support system that a president needs to make things work right on DAY ONE. On Day One, Obama will still be culling through the names on Teddy Kennedy's list of appointments.

Teddy will finally get his corner chair in the oval office. Somewhere, Mary Jo Kopeckne is weeping.

God help the Democrats if they shoot themselves in the foot with Obama's candidacy. Sorry, Barack, you don't have the birthright to demand what you're demanding without more work, more position papers, and more policy speeches.

Something absolutely amazing is happening right now. While HiIlary Clinton is loaning personal funds to her campaign, the Obama website is currently jammed with donors. The total (for just the last 24 hours) already exceeds $5 million. It's a fundraising juggernaut. It's democracy in action!

This does not surprise me at all. This is an American Revolution - it is evident in the numbers of voters, the breaking of the socio-matrix used to measure demographics. This is serious business - this Revolt is against the failed Administration and policies of George W. Bush and his Republican choked Congress.

My neighbors, the Rendon family, just sent this letter to Howard Dean as response for Mr. Dean"s request for a contribution to the National Democratic Party to face John McCain.

Mr. Dean: We don't worry about McCain just now. We can deal with him later. We worry that the Licensing Committee, yet to be appointed, could rob Obama of fair play in this campaign, if this so-called committee authorizes Hillary's wish to claim delegates for her illegal participation in the Michigan and Florida primaries. First FIX THAT PROBLEM. If you don't fix this situation in a fair and just manner as per the rules that the DNC established for states that did not comply with the DNC"s program for primary elections , you will see that many followers of the Democratic Party will stay home in November motivated by deep disappointment for their party"s actions. Mark my words!

So here is something for discussion...

Should Obama win the nomination he will need Michigan and Florida in the general...

What should be done with the delegates from the Michigan and Florida primaries?

The Clinton camp's claims of a victory today, after spending weeks retreating from a much stronger position vis-a-vis Hillary's other competitors, reminds of the story told by John Kenneth Galbraith of the debriefing of the German Albert Speer at the close of World War II.

How was it, Galbraith asked, that Speer knew his Germans were losing?

It was, Speer replied, because the glorious victories of the Fatherland were growing ever closer to Berlin.

Let's liberate the Democratic Party from the occupation forces of corruption and moral relativism!

The Big "O" has got the Big Mo !!!
Go Obama !!!

With Bill Clinton's impeachment, I vowed I'd never vote Republican again (not that I did very often). With Nader's being a spoiler in 2000, I gave up joining the Greens.

That said, if Hillary becomes the nominee due solely to the superdelegates, I will have a hard time supporting her. (While I was originally an Edwards supporter, I have no problem supporting Clinton if she wins the popularly elected delegates.) And if the Democratic party allows that to happen, I will have almost no reason to support them further either. I mean, the Democratic congress has been a disgrace.
