Brian McNamee, Roger Clemens' Trainer, Brings 7-Years-Old Bloody Syringes And Vials To Congressional Hearing

Washington Independent   |  Matthew Blake   |   February 7, 2008 04:19 PM

Congress's sweeping probe into performance enhancing drug use in baseball now seems more like a public feud between Roger Clemens and his ex-personal trainer Brian McNamee.

McNamee walked into the House's Rayburn office building this afternoon carrying seven-years old bloody syringes, vials and gauze pads. His lawyer's promised that this unseemly trash is the treasure proving his client truthfully accused Clemens of using steroids and human growth hormones.

McNamee presumably told Congressional investigators the same thing under oath this afternoon. Clemens responded by flying back to Washington today for an impromptu talk with House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Henry A. Waxman, D-Calif., and ranking Republican Tom Davis, R-Va.

First of all, I wholeheartedly agree with everyone who has written to say that they can't believe how much time Congress takes to fully investigate every stupid controversy that arises in the world of sports while our nation nearly melts down from unprecedented legal and ethical violations by the Bush administration, an illegal war that has killed or wounded tens of thousands of Americans (not to mention Iraqis), a global environmental crisis of shocking proportions, etc. etc. I don't give a good goddamn whether Rogers Clemens was jacked up or not while pitching -- leave his punishment to the baseball card collectors, hack sports writers and the Hall of Fame voters, but Congress HAS BETTER THINGS IT OUGHT TO BE DOING.
If one has to comment on this increasingly freaky case (who keeps medical waste for seven years???), has anyone every heard of chain of custody issues? How can this nutjob trainer prove (a) that these syringes and DNA samples have been in his exclusive possession and not tampered with in any way over the last seven years (b) how can we be sure that he didn't have some of Clemens' blood on a cotton swab used to treat a blister or cut on his finger that this guy used to dab onto syringes that never came anywhere near Clemens? A good defense lawyer will destroy the credibility and admissibility of this guy's "evidence" in about a minute and a half.

I'd sue the trainer for injecting me without my knowledge and bankrupt him.

Who is to say a needle has not been contaminated after the fact?
Why would any normal person want to save such a thing in the first place?
Will the trainer bring next, his soiled dress?
Could it be....extortion?...no of course not.
Why would any trainer want to do that to a multi-millionaire who just signed an additional 8 million dollar contract to throw baseballs a couple hours a week for almost six months?
The Baseball inquisitors should start living in the present but it is far easier to do what they are doing.
Specter is the one who needs to be investigated.

Let's see. We're in the middle of at least two disastrous wars, getting our butts kicked by the third world impoverished people living in rubble in Afghanistan, continuing to lose people and kill people every day in Iraq in an effort to steal their oil, and now we're just stealing Venezuela's money instead of their oil, and the reports say that I have to pay $16,000 for the Iraq war (Hillary: send me a check to cover that, okay?).

And there's that rescession that "may" be coming, except IT'S ALREADY BEEN HERE FOR A YEAR WHICH IS WHY NOBODY CAN AFFORD TO BUY ANYTHING AND MORE PEOPLE ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS. We "may" have a rescession my ass. It's here already.

And don't even mention global warming.

And the Democratic elite, as it turns out, thinks of us working people and voters as amusing little folks, but not to be trusted to choose the candidate, so they've got the backroom deals already going where "Super" delegates sell out to Clinton (what do they get? Money? What do the Superdelegates receive if they agree to vote for Bill. I mean Hillary?).

But Congress is going to the ball game. Having their picture taken with all their favorite players. I wish we could fire everyone in Congress, with a few exceptions.

The guy saved dirty needles. Or, of course, maybe he shot Clemens with vitamin B (very popular) and made the phoney thing up to blackmail Clemens. Or just to fool the idiots in Congress.

Recess is over. Back to work. The country is going down the tubes fast. Put away the gloves and balls and start doing something to earn your paychecks.

The way these people in Congress steal money, do nothing, and lie about the whole thing, you'd think they were all Republicans.

I guess since Congress won't go after Bu$h they'll go after one of his Texas buddies, except it ain't Ken Lay or Tom Delay. ???

Not to worry tho. I'm sure Bu$h will pardon Clemens...

There's something wrong with this picture. In Criminal Justice work, these items this man is putting forward would not be admissable in any righteous court of law. How after 7 years would any of this be inside the statute of limitations and finally, what is he after? Clemens has busted his butt for years to get to where he is now...one of the top pitchers in mlb history. I realize he's been a troubled individual but now, after all these years some trainer is going to try to take him down? Can anyone say I'm looking for big money or could this be payback for some unknown reason? On the other hand, I strongly feel that the congress has better and more pressing things to do like impeaching the criminals in the White House and the VP's office. Not to mention that a large number of citizens are in need of help from the government they fund, with their health care, mortgages, and crooked corporations selling them out on retirement money and promises. Let's let Clemens get on with it, and let's tell the congress to ramp it up on issues related to those who elected them. MLB can investigate through the commissioner's office congress, don't waste our time.

Gee, leave it to the Americans! Now this reminds me of Monica Lewinsky's dress. So what, they took steroids or whatever. It is their health not yours!

NO one would keep seven-years old bloody syringes, vials and gauze pads, unless it was for a "Set-Up". In this case 2+2 = 5.

I wonder why people are not as outraged at him as they were a Bonds?? When Bonds was accused you would have thought he was a murderer or something the way the media treated him. Roger "the cheater " Clemens gets a free ride.

perhaps you haven't been watching any of the sports shows. He is being ripped. Also, Barry admitted taking HGH(on accident). So far there is no proof or admission from Roger.

It's funny (as in sad, pathetic, etc.) that our government, which can't be bothered when a CIA agent is outed (that's called treason, by the way) by the Bush team, which happily voted for a new "thought police" law which further destroys the illusion of democracy in the US (is our bought and paid for press evening warning the masses about this new outrage?), which continues to support wire tapping and torture, which feels that impeaching a man for his sex life is justified (and in my view, nobody has the right to ask anyone about their sex life) while impeaching a man for bankrupting the nation (dare I mention killing tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens and thousands of American troops? How about shredding the Constitution?) is ludicrous ... that this kind of out of control brain dead government should go after baseball players while our nation falls apart internally and externally (it's called a smokescreen ... as in the pretense that they are actually doing something to earn their paycheck).
And what's equally disgusting is the moral outrage people feel over ballplayers shooting up (daring to use the tired old "it's for the children BS), while refusing to demand that the serious ills of society (poverty, poor education, health care, disintegrating infrastructure, etc.) be addressed by those we voted in from both parties.
You guys are puppets on a string, dancing to the tune of those that would be king.
There's an old saying that one gets the government they deserve. Truer words were never spoken.

saw my ist yankee games in 1946 and have been hooked ever since.its sad that baseball is now a game your severly at a great disadvantage if you dont cheat.the owners, players union and commissioner find reasons to look the other way than correct the cheating. the owners pay selig 15 million dollars a year and buds not about to make waves. he raved about the mcguire/sosa battle as a life saver for baseball.these guys are so juiced that sosa hit more than 60 home runs three times with out winning the homer title.no red flag there right? as a yankee fan i was thrilled when they won 4 series in 5 years. now we find out they had about 24 players that were juiced during that reign. count me as a former torre fan and supporter.i cant buy into the story that joe sat in the dugout and club house all those years and saw and heard nothing.if thats the case than the n.y. writers were right whern they called him clueless joe when he was hired.whats truly sad is that sen mitchell listed about 90 cheaters without the cooperation of one player coming forward to assist.i personally dont under stand how any one with an I.Q ABOVE PLANT LIFE COULD BELIEVE THE CLEMENS,BONDS,SOSA,MCGUIRES ETC.THEY WERE ENDOWED WITH GREAT TALENT BUT IT WASN'T ENOUGH FOR THEM. AT LEAST PETTITTE IS REMORSEFUL AND IMBARRESSED.NOT SO FOR THE OTHER LIARS.THERES AN OLD SAYING THAT YOU GET WHAT YOU ACCEPT..I HOPE THE FANS DONT CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THESE CHEATERS BUT I DONT HAVE MUCH HOPE, AFTER ALL THE WORD FAN IS DERIVED FROM THE WORD FANATIC..
