Democratic Caucuses In Maine

Huffington Post   |   February 10, 2008 08:48 AM

stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust mixx.com

Mark Halperin reports that with 11% of the precincts reporting, Obama has a slight lead over Clinton, 50% to 48%.

An early report from Maine has caucus-goers turning out in very large numbers:

Democrats and independents have arrived in droves to caucus at Cape Elizabeth High School this afternoon, delaying the start of the proceedings by more than an hour.

The event is one of hundreds of its type today, as Democrats in Maine head to local caucuses a day after Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. swept contests in Louisiana, Nebraska and Washington - closing in on front-runner Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. in the battle for the Democratic presidential nod.

Hundreds of people waited in the school's cafeteria for the proceedings to begin. Some were forced to wait at least an hour to get into the building. The caucus had been scheduled to begin at 12:30, but proceedings were getting under way at 1:40 p.m.

With the Republican nomination all but fully secured by John McCain, Clinton and Obama have turned their eyes and their attacks towards him, with each seeking to make the argument that they re more qualified and more likely to beat McCain in a general election.

Democrats trudged to caucuses amidst snow and bitter winds. Maine deals with high levels of snow all the time, but it remained to be seen whether or not it would affect turnout.

Obama has the momentum going into the Maine caucuses (Via NY Times):

After his decisive victories in Washington, Louisiana and Nebraska on Saturday, Senator Barack Obama is facing off against Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday afternoon in caucuses in Maine.

Mr. Obama's wins, combined with his building advantage in fund-raising, gave him momentum going into Maine, as well as the coming contests on Tuesday in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Still, the race for Democratic delegates remains too close to call, and Maine may favor Mrs. Clinton, although there have been no polls. A win for her there could help blunt the edge of what are expected to be a string of victories for Mr. Obama in the 10 contests between last Tuesday and March 4.

Obama heavily criticized John McCain and the Iraq War at a Maine rally, telling supporters that McCain would fight on in Iraq for another hundred years. Obama also argued that he was better positioned to end the war than his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton:

Democrat Barack Obama said he is better positioned to change Washington and to end the Iraq war if elected president in an unusually spirited critique of rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain on Saturday.

Before 7,000 people in Bangor, Me., Obama said McCain -- the likely Republican nominee -- "wants to fight a 100-year war" in Iraq. It was a reference to the Arizona senator's remarks that some U.S. troops may be in Iraq a century from now.

He also criticized McCain for initially voting against President Bush's major tax cuts and later embracing them. And he mocked McCain's attacks on pork barrel spending, saying, "it was his party" under the Bush administration "that passed the biggest increase in pork barrel spending" in history.

The Washington Post reports that women could give Clinton an edge in today's Democratic caucuses in Maine:

It is women like Linda Sinclair who have turned New England into a potentially tough playing field for Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.).

Sinclair listened with rapt attention as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) spoke at a rally in Orono on Saturday morning, on the eve of Sunday's Maine caucuses. She committed to Clinton three months ago, and while she planned to attend an afternoon Obama event in nearby Bangor, she did not expect to change her mind.
"She's really in touch with the common person, even though she's not one," Sinclair, 58, said of Clinton. "I think they're both very bright. But she's more solid. I think he's fluffy."

Democrats gather across Maine for today's caucuses. There was a light snowstorm overnight, but there is still the potential for snow squalls and strong gusts of wind, with the possibility of scattered power outages:

An overnight snowstorm proved to be only a nuisance, but there's still a possibility of snow squalls as Democrats gather for caucuses across Maine.

Meteorologist Art Lester from the National Weather Service says the storm that began Saturday evening left 2 to 5 inches of snow across Maine. The biggest snow tally was 5.4 inches in Hiram; Portland got 2.1 inches before the snow turned to rain.

Lester says snow squalls are expected Sunday afternoon with the possibility of another 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation. He says there will also be strong wind gusts topping out at up to 50 mph, raising the possibility of scattered power outages.

gypsy508 - you are right. Bill punished women and children. The welfare budget was only 1% of the national budget. He did not target corporate welfare. Did he? You know why don't you?

"Maine Voters Coming Out in Droves". This is the headline and the degree the headline writers on Huff Post are simply willing to lie and intentionally distort the truth in their slanting the news towards Obama. These are the "droves" that Maine voters are coming out in ( Obama in the lead, naturally). As of 6:03 eastern time with 59% of precincts reporting Obama has 1,305 votes and Clinton 956. These are the "droves". Of course they are droves. Obama is in the lead.

Now Huff Post can do one of two things. They can take down my post and hide it as something either embarassing to them or worse, because there is an extreme bias towards Obama that the editors are allowing, or they can do something about it and discipline the headline writer or make it clear that this kind of distortion and dishonesty isnt going to be tolerated. If I see my post listed I will at least know they are going to do something about it.

Speaking of Obama has 1,305 votes and Clinton 956, these are not actual votes as in a primary.

This is a caucus, so 1,305 votes could means hundreds or thousands of individual votes.

Yesterday I went to the Washington State Democratic Caucus. There were 500 people when typically, only about 100 people show. Obama won our precinct by a margin 3 to 1 over Clinton. We selected delegates and then waited to see the amazing margin of victory State wide. Something like 3-1. The reason support Obama:
1. ELECTIBILITY - in a race against McCain, Obama wins hands down.
2. LOOKING FORWARD - Electing Clinton will result in right vs left politics and gridlock while the right tries their best to play "gotcha" with Clinton. An Obama presidency will change the tone in Washington as he will be an inclusive leader.
3. COAT TAILS - Obama will be elected by a coalition of young, old, independent and republicans with a huge mandate and long coat tails. This will also result in a stronger majority in the House and Senate.
4. INTEGRITY - Obama has integrity. Clinton has miss-stated his position on the war, comments about Reagan, and his support of womans issues. The head of NOW was so offended by her comments, that she SWITCHED her support from Obama.
5. MONEY - HRC accepts special interest money, Obama does not.
6. VOTING RECORD - True, Obama did not have a vote in the Senate when the the Iraq war vote came down. HRC was up for reelection and voted FOR the war, Obama was in a tight election race and voted against the war. Every senator who was not up for reelection voted against the war. HCR voted to support war with Iran, she voted to give Bush surveillance powers and so on. Obama is the most progressive member of the Senate.
7. LEADERSHIP - Obama inspires, generates excitement and offers hope. He brings in kids and people across the isle. Clinton has baggage. If you say Clinton, people have a visceral response to the name. The right wing hates her with a passion known only to small animals defending their young. Electing her, not certain in a General election, will produce no leadership, only partisan bickering, gridlock, and increase the power of the minority party.

David Rees' article in HuffPo a while back made a good point. How could Hillary Clinton, supposedly a a passionate advocate for childrens' welfare, vote not to ban landmines? Obama did. It points to a difference in character. He did the right thing though it brought him no gain. She did the cynical thing because the right thing might have hurt her.

I just got back from my Camden Maine caucus ~ what a great exercise in democracy!!

The biggest turnout in years and the results were:

Obama: 17
Clinton: 4

Undecided had not enough to earn a delegate.

All was civil but very robust and enthusiastic!!

A friend from Cumberland just told me the same type of split for the candidates occurred there; ditto for the town of Thomaston. Everybody reported feeling great when it was all over and they dusted the snow off their cars to head home. Of course, they are all Obama supporters.

We'll have to wait to see how the 89% balance of the caucuses report ~ but in any case everybody should be thrilled at the turnout despite the snow.

ps -for those of you trying to one-up the other side in who did want, I remind you that there are no virgins or saints in politics. And if one has come along, he/she is now remembered, if at all, by one word: "loser". It's all a matter of degree and just what they did to lose their political virginity. Now, if we are speaking about political whores, i.e. Tom DeLay version, now that's another matter probably.

Your cynicism knows no bounds. But people are tired of being like that.

I'm a 56-year-old white woman and I'm for Obama because he's the most liberal in the Senate...Hillary's in the mid-range. His politics more closely reflect mine.

Why is that so difficult to understand?

I think people are tired of the far right and the far left. Most fall somewhere in the middle. Hillary is much more of a centrist and pragmatist than Obama. That is why I believe she is more electable despite what the polls may say. (Remember New Hamphire?) Obama may preach about all the pie-in-the-sky stuff, but he hasn't a clue as to the down-and-dirty reality of actually getting it done. "Saint" Obama is going to have a rude awakening if he is elected and we all are going to end up paying for his education.

I agree, Obama is a tiny bit more liberal. But he's also a "Uniter". In politics, that means he will compromise on everything. Just look at what already happened to his so-called "healthcare" plan.

they are making the point, Obama is not a saint, there is no such thing in the world of politics. He is just as much as politician as the rest. the question is, what degree and level his is politics. Is he as bad as say Tom Delay, then absolutely not. Has he been divisive, a little conniving, a bit misleading in his statements, he has sent out erroneous mailers, he decries when his record is attacked, but when he is the one attacking has taken the position has just wanting answers, he has taken money form state lobbyists (yes he has, his Sr. Campaign Advisor is a state Lobbyists, but Obama has said that is different than the ones he has refused to take money from.

Bottom-line he is not some good-natured political saint. he has just gotten people to listen to him with out questioning him, but that is the biggest mistake any of you can make.

Both candidates will be smeared to some degree - especially by those stupid mass emails, or by the onslaught of 527s....slicing and dicing at this point in time over who will best beat McCain is just based on
hypotheticals and polling. And no one can predict the turnout (always our achilles heel) in November, and why such and such a group will or will not support X or Y. And will the "youth vote" let us down once again? Above all, We haven't even had a single day of general election campaigning, we haven't had the conventions and the speeches, we haven't yet had our "framing McCain" strategy, we haven't had a single debate with McCain....Look. Vote the way you want to now. Then stand up and work like hell for whoever wins the nomination. (Yeah, I know, there's a lot of crap yet to come in respect to that...but...).

Bill CLinton has been recently quoted by Maureen Dowd and the press pool as stating That "Hillary and I have discussed every major decision since 1971". Therefore to understand how Billary will rule, we need to go back to their previous administration where the following events took place:

1. NAFTA was passed and none of the conditons that might have protected US workers were ever enforced.

2. Social Security was taxed for the first time.

3. The means of measuring the economy were redefined to lowball inflation and unemployment. People out of work more than a year are no longer considered unemployed. Most important, today's social security payments and salaries are 2/3 of what they would have been if inflation wasn't lowballed. This is because both increases are keyed off of government announced inflation figures.

Thanks to the Clintons, we are now reaping the economic disaster of putting lipstick on the economy while destroying middle class purchasing power.

do you remember the 90's at all?? If you did then you would know the middle class purchasing power was stronger than ever. We had a record surplus, the economy was booming, consumer confidence was at an all time high, and people were utilizing that power. When Bushy boy came into office, we had a surplus, so what does he do, he administers a tax cut, who for the most part only assist the top 1% of the economy, (who really needed the break in the first place) which once the dot com bubble burst, the middle class felt the squeeze for we were still paying the same tax rate as before the bust, and the rich had a lower one, thus allowing them to keep even more of their inflated fortunes.
