McCain Received $100,000 From Firm Of Abramoff Notoriety

On the stump, Sen. John McCain has touted his work tackling the excesses of the lobbying industry to bolster his reputation as a "maverick" reformer.

"Ask Jack Abramoff if I'm an insider in Washington," McCain often contends. "You'd probably have to go during visiting hours in the prison, and he'll tell you and his lobbyist cronies of the change I made there."

But how much change did McCain actually effect? And is he all that removed from Washington's special interests?

A review of campaign finance filings shows that the Arizona Republican has accepted more than $100,000 in donations from employees of Greenberg Traurig, the very firm where Abramoff once reigned.

Those donations include several thousand dollars from registered lobbyists who represent, or have represented, businesses such as NewsCorp, Rupert Murdoch's media empire; Spi Spirits, a Cyprus based company that has fought with the Russian government for the rights to the Stolichnaya vodka brand name; El Paso Corp, a major energy company; General Motors; and the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition, a group of businesses and trade associations "concerned" about the shortage of lesser skilled and unskilled labor.

All told, McCain has received more than $400,000 from lobbying firms, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. And among his major fundraisers ("bundlers") 59 have been identified as lobbyists by the non-profit organization Public Citizen.

There is nothing illegal about these contributions. But campaign watchdog groups and McCain's opponents view them as more than just a reflection of political irony. McCain, they argue, has on occasion been far more bark than bite when it comes to taking on lobbying interests.

Indeed, this past week, the Democratic National Committee put together a memo challenging McCain's assertion that he was a corruption hound while investigating Abramoff. The document and some government watchdog groups note that while McCain put pressure on Jack Abramoff and several prominent Republicans, he also went out of his way during the Indian Affairs Committee hearing to spare his congressional colleagues.

"Although Sen. McCain has long bragged of his role in the Abramoff investigation, he let Tom DeLay and the other members of Congress who were doing Abramoff's bidding completely off the hook. The sole exception was Rep. Bob Ney, who is now serving time in prison," said Melanie Sloan, Executive Director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics In Washington. "Sen. McCain knew what his colleagues were up to, he chose to take the easier path and give them a free pass."

Neither McCain's office nor the Indian Affairs Committee returned requests for comment. In the past, McCain has claimed that it was not his responsibility to "involve ourselves in the ethics process [of Senators]." A source close to the investigation, who asked to speak anonymously so as to maintain his political neutrality, defended McCain's work as proper and effective. So did Paul Miller, the director of the American League of Lobbyists at the time of the Abramoff hearings.

"I think if you look at the report that Senator McCain and his committee, it was a bipartisan 16-0 vote to approve that report," Miller told the Huffington Post. "Yes, Bob Ney was the focus in some of these hearings, because he was one with the most evidence [against him]. But Senator McCain has not shied from taking anyone on, on this issue."

At well over 350 pages, the report was thorough, exploring layers of corruption that had allowed Indian tribes to part with tens of millions of dollars in search of political favors. But it did not include the names of prominent U.S. Senators with Abramoff ties, such as Conrad Burns and David Vitter, or for that matter Bush strategist Karl Rove, who accepted gifts from and met with Abramoff clients.

And while the report pushed for greater transparency and accountability, towards the end, McCain and the other authors seemingly put the onus for change not on Congress itself, but on the tribes that Abramoff bilked.

"Although the Committee does not believe that additional federal legislation is required to address Abramoff and Scanlon's misconduct," the report reads, "it does recommend that tribes consider adopting their own laws to help prevent a similar tragedy... The Committee strongly encourages those tribes that have not adopted such [good-government] laws and regulations to enact law and regulations that embrace the principles contained in the following recommendations. The Committee notes, however, that it is not recommending that Congress enact legislation mandating tribes to enact laws dealing with these subjects..."

It just makes him look THAT MUCH BETTER to Republicans. Remember the Republican Rules of Acquision NUMBER ONE is 'Once you have their money....never give it back'. Oh, and 'Never trust a man who can't be bribed'. So this story is just good publicity for McCain. I'm sure he's extremely proud of his involvement with such a dishonest and criminal person.

Ok, I've gotta chime in here and say that this is pretty unfair to McCain/his donors at Greenburg Traurig. GT is a law firm. It does a ton of legal work in addition to lobbying. Much like the firm I work for -- Venable. And, I'd assume, that much like me, most of GT's lawyers are not lobbyists. And many of their donations to McCain have nothing to do with lobbying. Their just donating to a campaign. Campaign finance rules require that all donors list their employer. So, every GT employee who donated to McCain (or any other candidate) had to list GT as his/her employer. Regardless of whether their donation has anything to do with lobbyists.

I've made numerous donations to Obama. I'm not a lobbyist, my firm didn't ask me to make the donations. If anyone at the firm knows I've made the donations it's only because the donations are public record. The donations were simply based on my individual for his candidacy. Yet -- according to the tenor of this article -- someone could look at my donations and those of others at my firm -- and write that Obama got huge donations from a lobbying firm. Not true, and not fair.

so why are donations limited to $2300 per person and how many people work there?

As Senator Obama likes to say "The wheels have fallen off the Straight Talk Express".

Of course, since McCain is 72 years old - maybe he just forgets - yet another thing that makes him like his idol Ronnie Reagan.

All politicians take money from lobbyists.
Here we argue who takes more or which is a bribe. It is wrong PERIOD.
Let us rewrite the laws and make it illegal and stick with it. We do not want to have a onesided politicians who owns his contributor but us, the PEOPLE. High time to change!

Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff has agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors. He could name up to 20 congressmen.

When President Bush heard this, he said "That's amazing. I can only name three congressmen".

This is just part of the pattern started when McCain accepted donations for favors leading to the savings and loan crisis. For McCain this is just business as usual.

Why has Jack Abramoff and Adam Kidan not been charged with the murder of Konstantino "Gus" Boulis? McCain held hearings on the Abramoff scandals and did really major scolding and hand-slapps! Abramoff & Kidan paid Anthony "Big Tony"
Moscatiello $250,000 for an un-fulfilled "Catering" Contract, Itilia Federicci was scolded for operating an illegal 501-C for the then Secreatary of State, Norton. More than 20 GOP Big-Shots could have been charged as co-conspirators in the Boulis murder and theft of Boulis's Sun-Cruz Casino Ships (31 million dollar value) but the DOJ refused to file a "RICO",and McCain dropped his "investigation" Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, drew 18 months in a Country Club prison for his role in the theft. All the others got "Get Out Of Jail Free Passes" i,s, Grover Norquest, Ralph Reed, Tom DeLay, and many more!CHECK IT OUT!!

Is this news? Aren't all politicians who accept contributions from corporations, lobbyists and PAC's corrupt? How can a politician who accepts such donations remain "neutral" when it comes to legislation or policies, when they "owe" someone favors, or realize their ascension to their position is due to a specific "interest?"
What concerns me more than Abramoff's donations or collaborations are those of the AIPAC. The Israeli's own most of our politicians, legislators and nearly every vote or decision is made not in the interest of the U.S., but what benefits the state of Israel, as if it were part of our nation. Nearly 1/3 of our total foreign aid package goes to just Israel alone, much of which is utilized to build walls and enclose (rather imprison) Palestinians, or to build Israeli settlements on Palestinian-owned land. The remainder of our aid is used to wage war, invade, occupy other soverignn nations and territories, contrary to numerous U.N. resolutions. The rate of malnutrition and anemia amongst Palestinian children is 10X higher than that of all other Middle Eastern nations, including Iraq, neighboring Jordan and Syria (both of which have no oil reserves), and where the standard of living is much lower than Israel. Who ever is our next president, we've got to get the AIPAC and other Israeli lobbys off our backs, and begin to deal even-handedly with ALL nations, to restore credibility and sincerity. Our support for Israel's invasion of Lebanon, financial support to help the government there build walls, cut off services, supplies and utilities to Palestinians, imprison, detain and deny them access to education, medical services, travel, employment is unconscionable, immoral, indecent and ruins our reputation as leader of the "free" world.

The points made here are certainly disturbing, but they are factual, yet they are hardly ever covered by our biased media. What we do see on the media is coverage of Palestinian rocket attacks -- reactions by the Palestinians against Israeli oppression -- against the Israelis, which result in an occasional injury or death of an Israeli citizen. What about the dozens of deaths of Palestinians by retaliatory Israeli attacks against them? Hardly a word by our media. Until we Americans demand that our government assume a neutral stance in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, then we can certainly expect more acts of Islamic terrorism to be committed against us, since the number one reason for the 9-11 attacks was our biased support for Israel.

I, as an American citizen, am sickened by America's biased support for Israel, to the detriment of the Palestinians, yet I feel almost powerless to do anything about it. Perhaps Obama will have the good sense to take us in a new direction regarding this troubling issue. America's claim to be a "Christian nation" notwithstanding, we need to separate the religious beliefs of many in this country that "God promised the land of Israel to the Jews," and realign ourselves with the constitution, which promotes the idea of a separation of church and state.

McCain has a lot going against him. His age is first. Second, his stance on the war in Iraq is totally inconceivable, given we're spending billions, sacrificing countless American and Iraqi lives for a sectarian and internal dispute arising from ages of ethnic and religious rivalries.
Had Dubya's administration "experts" given a thought or considered the history of other nations that were under strict centralized rule, and then were "democratized," would have known chaos, ethnic cleansing, religious and cultural (ethnic) rivalries would erupt, plunging that country into a quagmire of bloodshed and mayhem, which only they (internally) can settle. Usually, it results with the separation of enclaves or seperate entities (mini-nations). In Iraq, there will probably be a Shiite, Sunni, and Kurdish states that will be distinct enclaves for peoples of similar religious and ethnic backgrounds, who can and will live peacefully within their own new countries. Iraq (Babylon) as a country is long lost. Al-Malaki and the U.S. supported central government has already proven itself incapable of maintaining control, providing basic services, security or stability, let alone political viability. There's no point in staying the course to continue this mess, let alone attempting or even thinking about destabilizing Iran with another invasion and post-war occupation.

His age is a prime factor - he may die any day. He is not in the best of health could see how short he is and how hard it was to embrace the monster Bush, or was that because they were wearing stiff suits of armour? Note how stiff McCain is. The status of his health is a well kept secret.
