Obama Camp: Now "Next To Impossible" For Clinton To Win Most Delegates

February 13, 2008 10:26 AM

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe argued on Wednesday that it is now "next to impossible" for his candidate to lose the pledged delegate lead he has amassed in the Democratic primary.

"We have created such a buffer in terms of the pledge delegate lead that we think it is highly unlikely that it will be eroded," he said.

Speaking on a conference call to reporters, Plouffe put Obama's delegate lead over Clinton at 136, following wins in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. that netted the Senator 25, 16, and 9 pledge delegates respectively.

The gap between the two candidates, he added, was now great enough that Clinton would have "to win most of the remaining contests in blowout form," if she wanted to catch up.

"It is next to impossible for Senator Clinton to close that pledge delegate count," he said. "The only way she can do it is win contests [later, he specifically mentioned Texas and Ohio] by 25 to 30 points. And we don't see contests were she can do that."

Later in the day, the Clinton campaign, on a conference call of its own, challenged the notion that Obama's pledge delegate lead was insurmountable.
"We think that at the end of the day on March 4 we will be within 25 delegates," said Clinton aide Guy Cecil, before adding that the margin would be less than 1 percent of total delegates committed.

Of course, super-delegates could also help Clinton close the margin, and Plouffe addressed that issue too, arguing that, come time to vote, those Democratic insiders should take their cues from the pledge delegates.

"At the end of the day we think the pledge delegate situation is going to drive events here," he said, and I think that's where the focus is going to be in regards to super delegates."

The last pathetic cries from an ending campaign. If you hate Obama so much then vote for McCain. Your vote is not going to be missed, Obama wins in a landslide this November. Hillary will get another chance in 2016, if losers like you don't ruin her "brand".

I love it, Ping!

I do agree.

We won't be missed.

Which is why, this party member, is exiting.

Your attitude has won.

Congratulations.

I forgot the main fact.

6 out of 10 registered democrats voted for Hillary.

So yes, please do dismiss us like dust.

That attitude about sums up what I think of the Obama crowd.

Smart......real smart.

Obama is running on his cousins 2000 platform. Bush.

CHANGE

I AM A WASHINGTON OUTSIDER

I WILL HAVE A HUMBLE FOREIGN POLICY

I WORKED ACROSS PARTY LINES

That is Bushes platform from 2000 why did Obama steal it for 2008? Go look it up for yourself. I would sit down first. And Obama is also cousins with Cheney. What a great blood line.

Senator Obama was in the senate around a year before jumping ship and running for President.

Senator Clinton was elected as senator for New York State in 2000; this was the first time an American first lady ran for public office and she is the first female senator from that state. And she was re-elected by a wide margin in 2006. So that would make her a 2 term senator.

Experience counts.

hillary carpetbagged her way to new york to campaign as senator, but everyone knows that she was always looking towards the presidency.

sometimes experience leads to feelings of entitlement, corruption, and lack of inertia.

FROM ABCNEWS.COM TONIGHT: ABOUT EDWARDS DECIDING ON WHO TO SUPPORT:

As he weighs a possible endorsement in the Democratic race, former Sen. John Edwards is as split as the party he once hoped to lead " and is seriously considering supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, despite the sharp criticism he leveled at her on the campaign trail, according to former aides and advisers.

On The Trail: Edwards Campaign WrapIn deciding between his one-time rivals, Edwards appears deeply divided. Several former advisers likened his thought process to a heart-versus-head split " with his heart favoring Sen. Barack Obama's strong message of change, and his head attracted to Clinton's tested nature and commitment to tough fights.

Though he sometimes aligned himself with Obama " and against Clinton " as a candidate, several Edwards campaign insiders say the former senator began to sour on Obama toward the end of his own campaign, and ultimately left the race questioning whether Obama had the toughness needed to prevail in a presidential race.

This quote will air tonight at 9:36 pm est. on BLOOMBERG TELEVISION"s "Money & Politics." The quote is from the "Dollars and Sense" segment with Gene Sperling and Kevin Hassett:

The fact is that Obama"s [economic] plan today is the most shameless piece of potential plagiarism that I have ever seen. He basically took Clinton"s words and Clinton"s policies and called them his own. If I were a professor I"d give him an F and try to get him kicked out of school for something this terribleĻIf I were on the Clinton team, I"d be prepping memos.

- Kevin A. Hassett, Senior Fellow and Director of Economic Policy Studies, American Enterprise Institute, John McCain adviser (H/t AndreWalker08 at MyDD.com)

So John McCain's top economic adviser is trashing Obama in favor of Clinton. Is it possible he has an alternative motive?

I don't know if Obama copied from Hillary or if Hillary copied from Obama or even if the two plans are really identical. What I do know is that I don't trust Kevin Hassett's opinion on this matter. He is not an uninterested party to the Democratic nomination process.

If I were a part of the McCain campaign, I too would be doing my best to get Hillary nominated, especially in light of the most recent poll results:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/colorado/colorado_2008_presidential_election

The most recent Rasmussen poll in the key battleground state of Colorado taken on Monday shows Barack Obama beating John McCain by a 7 point margin (46% to 39%), while McCain beats Hillary by 14 points (49% to 35%).

JUST 3 AMONG MANY OF OBAMA SO CALLED ECO PLAN THAT HE STOLE FROM SENATOR CLINTON. SHE CAME UP WITH THESE IDEAS IN 2007:

His "new" proposal for a national infrastructure bank is one that Hillary proposed.
Hillary speaking on August 8, 2007 "I"m proud to co-sponsor Senator Dodd and Senator Hagel"s National Infrastructure Bank Act that we just introduced to establish a federally-backed independent bank that will evaluate and finance large infrastructure projects by subsidies, loan guarantees, and bonds backed by the full faith and credit of the United States." Rebuilding America speech.

His "new" proposal to create 5 million green collar jobs was proposed by Hillary.
Hillary said November 5, 2007 ["And three, to move us from a carbon-based economy to an efficient, green economy by unleashing a wave of private-sector innovation in clean energy and energy efficiency. I believe that will create at least five million good new jobs from clean energy over the next decade." Energy and Climate speech.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt praises Hillary"s plan to create 5 million Green Collar jobs.
Hillary speaking on 11/5/07 "By emphasizing the connection between promoting a green efficient economy and job creation, Senator Clinton"s plan seeks to harness the power of technology and innovation to address one of our most pressing global challengesĻThe goal of producing 5 million new jobs can be achieved by private sector investment and bipartisan support for increased research and development in efficiency and clean energy."

And I personally was at two speeches in late 2007 when Senator Clinton spoke of these issues. Now Obama has stolen them. Look at the date when Senator Clinton first spoke of her ideas. And yesterday Obama is saying these are his orginal ideas. Does Obama think everyone is as stuipd as he thinks they are?

I beg to differ. Watch the speeches - whatever Barack says is repeated by Hillary the very next day, as if they were her ideas....

Obama surrogates are out en masse in the media trying to get this theory going that she can't win. They are afraid of the remaining states and want to shortcut the process before all the voters have had a chance to vote.
The myth behind the number of states he's won is an empty shell. You can combine all his Idaho's and North Dakota's and all the other small states that are not going Democratic in November and stack them against CA and she overwhelms.

Good argument. Mrs. Clinton garnered 207 delegates in California. Sen. Obama racked up nearly 150 delegates at the Potomac primaries alone. He's garnered support in many pink and purple states that Mrs. Clinton simply wrote off. The 50-state strategy Obama deployed in his primary campaign is starting to look pretty keen and will be even more keen in the general election when he woos massive independent voters that Mrs. Clinton has already ostracized. THE COLD HARD TRUTH, ALL OTHER TALKING POINTS ASIDE--49% OF ALL VOTERS HAVE SAID THAT THEY WILL NOT VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON IN A GENERAL ELECTION. HOW CAN SHE OVERCOME THAT IN A GENERAL ELECTION?

On the FISA BILL that passed Obama in his usually lazy Bush fashion voted "NOT THERE, NO VOTE" so stop lying and pretending he did something else. Go look it up. The FISA bill that passed Obama and 2 other senators voted "no vote."

You know, kennedy, I try to keep an even keel when I comment here at HuffPo. I'm an Obama supporter but will campaign for either Democratic candidate in the general election. I try to avoid criticizing strong supporters of Sen. Clinton because I appreciate their zeal but I don't mind criticizing you. Your condescending, dishonest, manipulative and blind to reason. Your rhetoric is venomous and it is detrimental to your candidate and the democratic party. I find solace in the fact that you a part of a very narrow minority. Why don't you spend all the time you've invested in trashing a good, honest, democrat like Barack Obama into raking up muck on our November opponent? If you're part of the "If Hillary doesn't get the nomination, I'm going to vote for McCain in the general" camp then you truly are an idiot...a mental midget.

The "beware of Barack" strategies are no longer effective -- or valid. Obviously the millions of Democrats jumping aboard Obama's bandwagon could care less about him personally. He's a blank slate and people are writing their own ticket to victory. In what is actually the opposite of a "cult," these faith-filled followers are leading the charge, leaving poor Barack to figure out how not to slow everyone down with pesky things like specific policies and plans.

Forget the eerie cult leader and Hussein middle name stuff. There's only one way to stop a speeding train: de-rail it. To take the nomination from Obama, he'd have to be taken out completely. In the past that has been accomplished by leaking a devastating story (dead girl/live boy) about the challenger to the other side, and hoping they run with it.

Obama has been a cult leader all along. He just has more followers now.

The Obama butt kissing media as a whole seldom mention Obama and cult in the same breath. But some newspapers do and it is all over the internet. Freedom of speech is alive and well here. Goggle "Obama cult" and you will get site after site after site of people saying that you people that support Obama are a cult. In just 5 minutes here are some things on the interenet I found that Americas are saying about you Obama cult people and Obama:

It is obvious they have been hypnotized by the inspirational evangelical like speeches of the charismatic and charming false messiah.

He is no prophet Obama is a wolf in sheep"s clothing.

Did you happen to hear his windy speech on Super Tuesday? I felt like I was part of a tent revival. And was waiting for the collection plate to be passed around. And what was up with that blonde woman behind him on the right? Bawling and hanging on to every word. Creepy! She looked possessed.

All they see is the halo around his head.

ĻTIME Magazine"s Joe Klein as saying there was "something just a wee bit creepy about the mass messianism" in Obama"s Super Tuesday speech. Call me skeptical, but this whole Obama phenomenon seems downright eerie.

He is, after all, running for President of the United States, not for a pulpit. Substituting the state for God as provider has been the inherent common thread in all Marxist regimes.

Obama may be promising what only God can actually deliver, in the form of yet another, more eloquent, version of the same old utopian dream that started with Rousseau and Marx.

Obama is a silver tongued devilĻ a snake oil salesman. Wake up! America does NOT need or want what he is selling! The strings attached will be detrimental to our country!

If it is to good to be true, it usually is! This is defiantly a time when Americans for Obama should look a trojan horse in the mouth.

The fact that a number of critics say the same thing does not make those things true. Yes, some people are obnoxious enough to call those of us supporting Obama members of a cult, but that doesn't mean it is so. Likewise, some people call Hillary Clinton all kinds of horrible things (for instance, I hear that if you google Clintons and murder and Vince Foster, you will find crazy stuff too), but just because some people believe it and it shows up in the google doesn't mean I should believe it. It's obnoxious and untrue - from both sides. Shame on everybody who is being so hateful!

Voting against an experienced woman. To many men have a problem with women in power. And the hate that comes from them is beyond sick. And the excuses they use is so very, very sad. The good men out there who love and respect women thank you for your vote. Hillary has great ideas and plans for America and thank you for seeing that.

This is a desperate argument. I love and respect women and my mother, grandmother and fiance will attest to that. I have chosen not to vote for Hillary for three reasons that have nothing to do with gender. 1. She voted for the invasion of Iraq and continues to spin that vote without actually owning up to it. 2. She's part and parcel to the existing DC system and has accepted more lobby dollars than any other presidential candidate. 3. Her dismissive attitude toward Barack Obama and her attitude that seems to suggest that she feels she's owed the White House. Just because she's a woman, doesn't make any of those issues about gender. I'm not alone, many Democrats and Clinton fans have made similar judgments.

Sorry to pop your bubble but you are wrong on all three counts.Obama supporters continue to make the same false claims repeatedly like a scratched record but find it very difficult to explain Obama's position on anything except he is for change and of course "yes we can". But I have yet to hear one explain just how "yes we can" works in the real world. When reality sets in and the Republican swift boaters get done shredding Obama's sparse record we will see how flowery speech stands up to slim.

Yes, of course, that whole experience thing again and again and again. What exactly is she experienced in? She's been in the Senate for a couple of years longer than Obama. Other than that, she's very experienced at talking about how experienced she is. End of story....
