Rumor: NBC May Sue Writers Guild Over Canceled Golden Globes

Deadline Hollywood Daily   |  Nikki Finke   |   February 13, 2008 07:58 AM

stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust

I'm told by sources that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC are on the verge of taking legal action against the WGA for actions leading to the cancellation of this year's Golden Globes. Really, could Jeff Zucker possibly be more of a putz? I say the WGA should countersue the NBC Universal midget for impersonating a mogul (and the HFPA for impersonating a legitimate news organization).

Little Jeffy is the one who decided to cancel the Golden Globes, not the WGA. The WGA was exercising its legitimate rights to set up picket lines and wage a labor action and targeted the Globes to make a (very costly) point with the AMPTP--of which NBC Universal is a member. BTW, it was because of what happened with the Globes that the strike got settled. No one wanted to see a repeat with the Academy Awards.

If Little Jeffy has a beef, it should be with SAG, who refused to cross the WGA's picket lines.

But Little Jeffy is, after all as another poster so accurately stated a "bald dumb egocentric schmuck putz asswipe who cost his company over ONE BILLION DOLLARS in provable monetary losses is a real winner. When Zucker got his cushy job NBC was #1 now they are #4."

I used to be proud to say that I worked at NBC. No longer. When I was there, it was like being at Harvard, where excellence was recognized and rewarded. Now it's like some crummy community college where mediocrity is king and anybody can attend.

HALLELUJAH and AMEN to that, COMRADE!

I have, as a result of the disrespect heaped upon MYSELF and fellow members of the WGA, taken a solemn oath NEVER to write for teevee again until RUDE, talentless, myopic, megalomaniacal assholes like Zucker are purged from leadership roles in the industry.

Ours is a thankless enough job without GROSSLY OVERPAID CHILDREN like "Jeffy, The Bald Bastard" further marginalizing OUR WORTH to the overall artistic process.

If you want something better, America, you must demand it. Write a letter or send an email to Zucker or GE explaining WHY you are refusing to watch their network programming. Tell them you intend to Rent "Network" and watch it TWICE! Or better yet, donate $$$ to your local public teevee affiliate.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, my friends.

IT IS TIME TO HOWL YOUR DISPLEASURE!!!

It is time to squeak.

If NBC sues, add my name to the list of those who will be boycotting them. And writing their advertisers to inform them of the fact, of course.

And one more thing.
NBC and the AMPTP left the bargaining table in Decemeber.

Just up and walked away.

So his lawsuit is going to be about the WGA not bargaining with him while he rufused to bargain with them??? Case dismissed.

I seriously think Zucker might actually still literally suck his thumb. What a tool.

Awesome, file that suit Zucker.
Clearly he has not run this by the boys at GE yet.

I can hardly wait for the discovery and deposition process that will throw open the studio"s (and AMPTP's) entire strike strategy and internal communications process to everyone.

I will finally get to read those memos.
Probably right here on DHD.
Nothing like a legal filing to shed light on internal process and the people.

Bring it on Jeff.
You"re fellow moguls will love you for this Zucker.
You will truly never eat lunch in this town again.
This will be sooo good.

And the National Labor Relations Board will also get involved too as soon as any union is sued.

I"m tingling with excitement about this.
First the strike ends now this might happen.
I have to go now, I need a cigarette¦..

Speaking as an attorney . . . because of the labor Laws that BS will get pitched. And what a way to piss off viewers even more. Right now the Networks have gotten some goodwill back. But, they are really as dumb as major record labels. Go ahead and sue ya morons.

There is no shows worth watching on NBC.
I was going to say I would block the station on my TV in protest of Zucker when I realized I don't watch NBC anymore.
Heh!

This has happened before. I believe a number of years ago American Airlines sued their pilots who went on strike for losses incured. I believe it was quickly dismissed, but it did put fear in those pilots and their union to give in at the next contract renewal. As others have mentioned, Jeff Zucker would be very foolish to do this as he help drive NBC TV into an also ran in the ratings and would make it difficult to hold contract negotiations with the actors which are coming up soon.

The viewing public should then sue NBC for allowing greed to rule and thereby interrupt our right to view new programming.

Someone please explain to Mr. Zucker the purpose of collective bargaining. Without solidarity you have a large corporation competing against an individual. No threat to the corporation - major threat to individual. When the networks and studios wouldn't work out a new deal with the WGA, both sides stopped profiting from the writer's creations. Hey dumbass, that's the point of a strike. Everybody suffers until a fair agreement can be ironed out.

That would be it for me and NBC - and GE.

And, should GE/NBC make such a naked attack on the rights of the working people of America, I would encourage all of those whom I know to likewise drop NBC as an advertising and entertainment medium and GE as a supplier.

That parental block capability is a wonderful thing, and it is not that hard to explain to the citizens of the 'netiverse.

(Not that big a sacrifice, anyway - to totally block NBC from your homes and offices is blocking what - a half dozen channels? Out of 30 to 60 - or more?)

Let me explain to you how TV works. The networks have not planted a chip in your TV so see what you are watching or not (not yet).

The way ratings are determined is as follows: Nielsen has acquired some 5000 households who have signed up for getting monitored. Until you are not one of them, it does not matter what you might be watching or not

BTW-that 5000 thing? Pure hooey...

Oh, and I think I would include handy-dandy guides to block any NBC URLs for most of the common home and small office routers...that is easy to explain simply, too.

Is there anyone out there that doesn't know the dirty little secret about the HFPA? They're a bunch of second rate, grog swilling, third world wannabe critics who happened to sucker the networks into believing they actually mattered. They rent a broom closet in Hollywood with an answering machine. They go on junkets. They take the studio swag. They are self important nobodies. They are a perfect match for mr. Zucker and the brain dead suits at 30 Rock. Good luck sueing a union, you turkeys, this is America, where the workers haven't yet been muzzled by the likes of you.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:29 AM on 02/13/2008

Yeahn and some of them third world wannabes might even be black or brownskinned - how disgusting.

Shouldn't the entertainment industry remain in the hands of white America only, as it always was?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:30 AM on 02/13/2008

You really are ignorant. BAFTAS, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Spirit.
Crawl out from under your rock. The HFPA is 100% white europeans.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:13 PM on 02/13/2008

Yessiree...100% white European industry SHILLS! Their input has next to nothing to do with quality of product. They only exist to ramp up foreign sales.
If the American film industry were forced to "get by" on domestic sales alone, 95% of the CRAP the studios produce would never get "green lighted".

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:47 PM on 02/13/2008

Shouldn't NBC be thinking about better shows? Most of what they have on now blows.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:27 AM on 02/13/2008

Shakespeare was right, "Hang the lawyers first." At the time of the Golden Globes the strike was effectively a lockout. Wall St. runs Hollywood and they'll trash almost anything for a quarterly dividend. One might argue the "Globes" were what brought the producers back to the table.
It'll be fun when the "rocket scientist" who came up with this one finds out such labor actions are protected under Federal law. NBC will probably promote them.

Like the V-Chip lady on TV says to the chainsaw massacre, ... "You (NBC) are just about the scariest undead thing I've ever seen, ... but I am going to have to block you" NBC!

Sue the WGA and I'll boycott every one of your channels, ... and stop buying GE too! Tht will be tough, ... my Dad worked for GE all his life. But my mom was a union teacher all her life, ... and I'm siding with the union!

Well as a Johnny Depp fan, I understand wanting to make someone pay for being deprived of his acceptance speech, but come on.
I should've sued NBC for Manimal.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:42 AM on 02/13/2008

Zucker could absolutely be sued by the GE/NBC stockholders for losing over One Billion Dollars. Any WGA members who also own GE stock could join this class action suit. In fact WGA members could each buy 10 or 20 shares of GE stock just so they can qualify for the class action.

What"s needed is a lawyer who yearns for a huge spotlight. Lawyers love big showbiz-oriented cases like this because they get enormous publicity and this one is very easy to win.

Going after the bald dumb egocentric schmuck putz asswipe who cost his company over ONE BILLION DOLLARS in provable monetary losses is a real winner. When Zucker got his cushy job NBC was #1 now they are #4.

Add up all the lost advertising money and Zucker can be held personally responsible. So the suit would be GE STOCKHOLDERS (including some new WGA stockholders) V. Jeff Zucker. NBC and GE won"t be listed as defendants. Only Zucker will be sued, personally.

He deserves this so who will be the first lawyer to get going on this?

A worker fired by GE is precluded from filing a lawsuit by labor law. If he loses his house, his health, his family or anything else by a firing - even an illegal one - he can't sue. Now NBC wants to sue the union for damages in a strike in which they played a major role. Fat fucking chance!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:58 AM on 02/13/2008

Counter sue those criminal pricks and boycott them simultaneously.

Kucinich, Hillary and the WGA should sue for tens of $BILLIONS$. Put GE out of business, where they belong.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:36 AM on 02/13/2008

That should be some lawsuit. Is NBC a government entity where the workers are banned from striking? Isn't NBC one of the negotiating parties who could have settled at any point to save their show? With so few effective arrows in their quiver anymore workers have the right to to withdraw their labor in order to put economic pressure on intransigent employers such as NBC. Having lost the strike NBC wants another bite at the apple. Why aren't the right wing kooks in this country upset by this frivolous litigation?

Note to WGA: I'm telling you. You don't f**k with G.E.
