Shuster To Return To MSNBC

Talking Points Memo   |  Greg Sargent   |   February 13, 2008 03:41 PM

Over at TPM Election Central I just reported that Hillary had agreed to a Feb. 26th debate on NBC after threatening to boycott the network's debates in the wake of MSNBC reporter David Shuster's "pimp" remark about Chelsea.

This naturally begged the question: What does this mean for Shuster, who was suspended from MSNBC for the remark and has been in limbo ever since Hillary publicly suggested that his suspension wasn't enough?

Well, it turns out that he won't be fired and will be coming back to the network. Asked about Shuster's fate, MSNBC director of communications Alana Russo tells me this:

"He remains on suspension indefinitely, but he will not be fired and will be returning to MSNBC."

This suggests, I think, that MSNBC wants to wait until after the debate with Hillary is safely over before bringing Shuster back. Also, it bears pointing out that however crude and dumb Shuster's remark was, this was never primarily about him. It was about Chris Matthews.

It is obvious that the veterans such as Matthews,Russert,Andrea Mitchell, & Todd have been ready to finally bury Hillary since Iowa. There has to be an underlying story within NBC/MSNBC news as to such disdain and hatred they carry to their reporting on the Clintons. You would think they some leadership to point out the obvious. Maybe not.

Just a thought: wouldn't it be great if Kieth Olbermann nominated Chris Mathews "Worst Person in the World"? At times, from the expression on Kieth's face I am sure he is thinking that!

Shuster being suspended was all about Chris Mathews saying in Iowa "that 2/3 of democrats were against Hillary" and other unflattering remarks. So I guess you can say that MSNBC is some weird way is pimping out Shuster for Chris Mathews!

I miss David Shuster. MSNBC- how much longer are you going to kiss Hillary's $#@?

So do I, and I wrote to MSNBC, on more than one occasion, and asked them to bring him back. He was just a "scapegoat," because the narcissistic Clintons are losing and can never take responsibility for anything bad about themselves. Narcissists cannot admit fault or imperfection, so they have to blame others for their problems. They seized upon Shuster's remarks which were somewhat coarse, but absolutely TRUE! 28 year old Chelsea is not a little girl anymore, and she is definitely being "pimped out" by her parents, who will do ANYTHING, and use ANYONE, even their own child, to achieve their gains! David Shuster is a bright, intelligent journalist, who is just the most junior on the staff. He was easily expendable to the MSNBC powers-that-be. I for one, will be glad to see him come back, because he is much better than the majority of their other talent (except Keith Olbermann, who did the most fantastic "Special Comment" tonight about Bush!!!)

I like and didn't want David off, suspended, while Hillary and Bill talk their own forms of nasty while "using" their daughter to make those appearences and the phone calls to the supers. BUT folks, I also miss MICHAEL WARE! He was the sane and balanced voice on the middle east and he is gone from CNN for months. Is it ok when someone tells the truth as a reporter to dismiss/fire or what ever you can call it?

This kerfuffle is precisely about Chris Matthews and Tucker Carlson. Shuster is just an easy target.

Matthews and Carlson have each made insulting observations about Hillary's mannerisms, her speech, her laugh. Would Matthews call the ill-tempered McCain a castrado? Please.

I'm glad Shuster is coming back. For MSNBC to crucify him for the sins of Matthews and Carlson, who've each said FAR WORSE, is simply ludicrous and doesn't deal with the primary offenders.

the whole network has been doing that to Republicans for years (watch ANY KO episode)...but its not wrong unless its done against a Dim?

The Clinton campaign morphs into the Bush/Rove cabal...that's it let's start strong arming anyone from the press who says anything bad about us-and then if THAT doesn't work let's PRETEND they mean something other than what is intended-disgusting. Wrong remark by Schuster? Sure..but we knew what he meant-and so did they.

right...its hard to count the number of reporters and pundits that have been persecuted to the degree shuster has been by the "Bush/Rove cabal"...let's see what's one less than one? oh that's right ZERO!!!!!!!...and yet they have gotten treated way worse and even had an extremely similar phrase spoken about Gen Patraeus a VERY honorable man with an honorable career defending this nation (KO said it)...and yet no apologies, no suspensions, not even a we may have gone slightly too far...nice to see you still use two sets of rules...those for yourselves and those for otheres

I don't want to wait until after the debate (?) BRING Shuster back NOW!!!!
This is the dumbest thing MSNBC has engaged in.... talk about pandering... Shuster was the best thing about Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough and anyone else that had David on their show..... sheez.

slip of the tongue it was not. had you seen shuster on morning joe you'd see how sophmoric he is now that was unreheasred. shuster is reading his lines and had plenty of time for a correction before going on air. that said i would have believed the apology hag i not read the text message to phillipe. i think he's slearned his lesson firing no but a class in journalism 101 my benifit

Glad he's coming back. But, MSNBC is about as fair and balanced as Fox Noise. They are all promoting Obama.

This is true. I've gotta find another station. I used to adore Keith O. but I am getting a little tired of his Obama cheerleading.

I don't have a problem with Shuster but can't stand Chris Matthews!

basically anyone that defends msnbc's treatment of the democratic primary has to defend the fox news coverage of the bush presidency. they are exactly the same, a network that is suppose to be impartial and that claims to attempt to hold the highest standards of journalism as their own, has chosen a canidate and made him their own. its truely disgusting and it is tolitarian in practice. fox news has been bush's pravda. nbc is now obamas pravda

Shuster said a stupid thing.
Shuster apologized.
End of story.

I'm signing off to go watch "Pimp My Ride" on MTV.
That's how much the word has been watered down.

I love the MSNBC coverage and I'm fine with Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and so relieved David Shuster is returning - that was ridiculous. There is also something sort of great about Chuck Todd as their numbers guru. Tucker Carlson goes in the same category as Pat Buchanan - they play the contrarian role. MSNBC is fun to watch during these primaries. If you want a snorefest watch CNN. It's like watching accountants.

i agree that schuster is a good reporter, but if any of you saw the actual remark, it wasn't a mistake, he was interupted twice while trying to say it and he still got it in. i have never seen such petty, nonsensical bullshit being quoted as reasons to dislike hillary clinton. you all sound like sean hannity clones.

beyond goodand evil- lets call your mom, daughter, sister, or wife a whore on national television and use their names and pictures and see how ludicrous you still think it is

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:40 AM on 02/14/2008

What's ludicrous is that someone could believe for a second that an intelligent reporter with even an ounce of self-preservation would use that word with any type of sexual connotation in mind. The word 'pimp' in our culture has come to mean so many different things. The Urban Dictionary: "pimp, verb: to advertise (generally, in an enthusiastic sense) or to call attention in order to bring acclaim to something; to promote." That's exactly what Shuster was describing Chelsea as doing. To think he was calling her a whore is beyond disingenuous. One has nothing to do with the other.

So, uh, if I tell you to "go fuck yourself", because it's not meant in the literal, sexual sense, the intent is entirely devoid of the clear image that comes to mind?

By the way, how do you balance your entire weight on your forefinger atop that pin head like that? Must be exhausting.

"Pimp" may "mean so many things," but for people over 40 it still continues not only to have a sexual connotation, but an unsavory and illegal one. Hillary, who counts many older women among her supporters, correctly reasoned that they would be upset over the choice of words. To learn that Shuster persisted in getting the comment in is disturbing and changes the respect I previously had for him. I originally thought he spoke off the cuff.

I was hoping Shuster would get to moderate this debate...
