Clinton Earmarks Land Her In Top Ten In Senate

Washington Post   |  Paul Kane   |   February 15, 2008 02:54 PM

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton helped secure more than $340 million worth of home-state projects in last year's spending bills, placing her among the top 10 Senate recipients of what are commonly known as earmarks, according to a new study by a nonpartisan budget watchdog group.

Working with her New York colleagues in nearly every case, Clinton supported almost four times as much spending on earmarked projects as her rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), whose $91 million total placed him in the bottom quarter of senators who seek earmarks, the study showed.

Senator Claire McCaskill (D) Missouri, elected for the first time to the United States Senate in November 2006, explained why she was supporting Senator Barack Obama to be President of the United States. She is the only one of the 16 female Senators who now is.

These are her words. "It was a little nudging from my 18 year old Daughter." "It was Maddie in my face."
"She, (Maddie), said, "How can you look yourself in the mirror, you"re a slug, you"re playing it politically safe, I believe in this guy, I"ll never speak to you again if you don"t stand up and have some courage." "

"It was pretty intense, she was right, it was like a cold bucket of water on my head, she was absolutely right."

This is one of the new breed of Democrats we sent to Congress in 2006 to end the Iraq War. The war has not ended and this is what we got instead. Are your kids holding their breath unless you vote for Barack Obama? Are we making the right choice now?

an article from today's Hill that reveals "Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has secured more earmarks in the fiscal 2008 defense authorization bill than any other Democrat except for panel Chairman Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.)." The article goes on to explain the bill has $5.4 billion in earmarks, 26 of which were requested by Clinton, to the tune of $148.4 million in federal spending. (To be fair, most of the earmarks requested by Clinton were also requested by the senior senator from New York, Chuck Schumer.) According to Taxpayers for Common Sense, Clinton secured 360 earmarks in the four years between 2002 and 2006, worth a combined $2.2 billion.

Contrast all that with Barack Obama, who has only one earmark request in the defense bill. It's a request made by several senators on behalf of a Department of Education program for children with severe disabilities.

Hillary's earmarks were all made with other members of Congress; they were not solo or individual. Obama has released his earmarks BUT only for 2007, not 2005 or 2006. Why not? Is that transparency? Like McCain said, "I don't think so." If Obama preaches the talk, he'd better walk the walk--all the way.

Not to mention that New York has several HUGE military bases where funds for physical plant, health care, and family support programs all depend on earmarks for funding.

But, OK, let's stop supporting our troops and their families stationed at Fort Drum because the word "earmark" has become (wrongly) synonymous with "pork."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:57 AM on 02/16/2008

Earmarks are corruption too. Plenty of corporations get money from earmarks, contracts with Govt programs etc. In fact if you examine Clinton's record in terms of voting, earmarks, and who her contributors have been to her Senate campaign, you can see that there is a connection.

THAT'S CORRUPTION.

In any year at any time New York will always take the bulk of earmarks along with California. They are the centers of our economy. So this is a silly article, because in 20 years it will be the same

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:35 AM on 02/16/2008

Yes, this is just such a silly discussion because it is perfectly acceptable for senators to piss away OUR hard earned money while borrowing from China. I mean this a total non-story, because all the cool kids are doing it, and it's just that New York is more important so should get to accumulate more debt than the other states.

This will be a great argument to make against John McCain who took NO earmarks, and pledged to veto every one that crosses his desk as president.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:53 AM on 02/16/2008

You have no idea what earmarks actually are, do you? Have some members of Congress abused earmarks, sure, but most earmarks are what pay for local health programs, roads, construction projects, education funding, child care programs, etc. It's how representatives secure federal funds to ensure that important projects get done for their constituents back home.

There is pork, some of it is fat, but some of it is bacon. Hillary brings home the bacon.

Days after a Senate committee approved $1 million for a Woodstock concert museum, the project's Republican billionaire backer and his family contributed $29,200 to help the Democrats who requested the money, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles Schumer.

Faculty and administrators at the New School, a university in New York - which received more than $2.9 million in earmarks with Clinton's name on them - gave a total of $5,100 to her campaign last year. New School President Bob Kerry is a vocal Clinton supporter.

WASHINGTON - Senators Clinton and Schumer are asking the Pentagon to spend $123 million of its wartime budget for New York projects that the Department of Defense didn't ask for - but that in many cases are linked to the senators' campaign contributors.

It's a real estate developer's sugar-plum dream: a mega-shopping mall complete with 10 Broadway-style theaters, an indoor river, a Tuscan village and a 39-story luxury hotel sheathed in green solar panels shaped like giant blades of grass. Plus as much as $1 billion in government-backed financing, thanks in part to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton....

...Since taking office in 2001, Clinton has delivered $500 million worth of earmarks that have specifically benefited 59 corporations. About 64% of those corporations provided funds to her campaigns through donations made by employees, executives, board members or lobbyists, a review by the Los Angeles Times shows.

So what's your point? EVERY representative, in some way, brings money and investment back to their states. THAT'S THEIR JOB! Earmarks are one way to do this.

Such a non-story.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:04 AM on 02/16/2008

This should be no surprise to anyone. The HILL does just like her spouse. She dishes out the favors and expects to collect in return. She earmarks for special interest items then she receives donations to her campaign. The federal earmarked money going to her projects then she received a donation from the project she earmarked funds for; is that legal? I guess must be because both sides of the aisle (GOP and DEM)do this too. I believe she has over 600 earmarks for her special intrest favorites. I would like to have someone running that really wants to do things for the country and its people and not for their personal gain. I guess that is my Easter Bunny wish as it will happen when the Easter Bunny brings colored eggs. NOT

Maybe you should read the full article about what these earmarks were for. But I don't think you care about the facts.

I'll be relieved when the Team Clinton juggernaut finally careens into the ditch.

But it must be noted that HuffPo goes to great lengths to post the worst possible photos of Hillary. I know it's not a coincidence, since she's not the only one that keeps popping up with weird and goofy expressions in photos here.

The ghost of Michael Deaver is guiding the eye of the photo editor.

Not all earmarks are created equal. It depends what the money is used for. Not every earmark is a "Bridge to Nowhere."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:00 PM on 02/15/2008

Yeah Hillary money is use for pork barrel spending. Yeah Obama used earmark to gain hospital in his state. This is a big difference.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:38 PM on 02/15/2008

Right. Funding for road and bridge improvement is pork barrel. Or how about rural health care, pork. Women's protective services, must be pork. After school programs and early child care, pure evil.

If any of you would bother to READ the database, you would see the vast majority of earmarks were designated for poor towns and smaller cities in upstate New York, an area long ignored by both Albany and DC.

Earmarks can go either way. The bridge to nowhere is pure pork, but funding health care services, education programs, and infrastructure is EXACTLY what earmarks are supposed to be used for. That's what Hillary has focused on, and it makes her a GREAT senator.

In the Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics category,
since state level taxpayer money is primarily a function of how many taxpayers there are, a better statistic would be earmark dollars per state resident. Since NY doesn't have 4 times as many voters as Illinois, I'm sure Hillary would still have more earmarks than Barack, but the difference (and the Top 10 status) would surely be lessened and perhaps not worthy of a news story.

It wouldn't surprise me if this sort of calculation landed Ted Stevens of Alaska in the #1 slot (given the small population and Steven's longevity in the Senate).

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:53 PM on 02/15/2008

I think you are exactly right. The other thing to consider is that in an era where the executive branch refuses to do anything substantial in terms of job creation, some of these earmarks represent the best opportunity to create jobs within a Senator's state. This is not simply about putting money in contractor's pockets, it is also about getting some of the many billions of dollars of federal taxes spent on the people who sent it to Washington in the first place. Granted, it comes with political benefits, but if Obama's political calculation suggested that he would benefit more from earmarks, you gotta know he would be trying to get more. It also suggests that Hillary is a better negotiator, not just that Obama is somehow more principled (or even McCain for that matter). Besides, McCain likes earmarks for the wealthy, he now supports extending the tax cuts to those who don't need them. Same thing - different name.

Something tells me that if she is elected the Clinton money truck will not be stopping in states that no longer "matter".

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:52 PM on 02/15/2008

Uh oh....

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:49 PM on 02/15/2008

Props to the HuffPo for reporting this. All this from the candidate who is going to shut down Exxon right? 340 Million and she has the unmitigated gall to criticize spending. This is an outrage. I must add this is an outrage that happens on both sides of the aisle. And guess where Mouth Mertha ranks on that same list?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:23 PM on 02/15/2008

Oh and yeah, we could actually delve a little and ask how that money was spent, but not at HuffPo. DesertedbytheLight, don't you care what the data actually means?

Or are you really typical of your type? Just swallow the pablum hook, line and sinker. Huh?

So far, that's all you've shown yourself to be.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:37 PM on 02/15/2008

Oh, and I forgot to mention...you are such a turn on! God this is hot in some sick sort of way!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:25 AM on 02/16/2008

The pablum is so much better when YOU chew it first. Do you really want to continue this charade? This is too easy. Can you actually try to present a substantive challenge for me? OR are you exhausted with making an ass out of yourself yet?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:22 AM on 02/16/2008

Funny. What charade? Unlike you, I'm not holding up several identities to hide my true self.

You've created your own little world. You've gotten a little excited, I'd say, that someone is toying with you in that world.

You only feel potent while sitting at your littered workstation writing insults and hiding behind several identities.

My my, what an interesting guy. Btw, your political views are as messed up as your little fantasy world. But, that's OK because you and yours are gonna lose so badly this Fall. I can't wait.

Of course, I won't be able to see your pathetic response because you'll be on to your 2000th identity by then.

No Silly I am 6'3" 225 lbs and a body builder. Yes, I am a male and your worst nightmare. I own not one but 2 businesses so I guess you could say that I am paid to do this.....Dare mention successful? OK I'll stop there to give you time to adjust your stereo type mental illness....

I'm a New Yorker and Hillary is no government reformer. The spirit of Tammany Hall still lives with Hillary and Chuck Schumer (D-Wall Street).

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:38 PM on 02/15/2008

I'm glad to hear from a New Yorker! Was wondering were they stood. Seems Hillary thinks you all belong to her? Do Ya? Let me know how you feel.

Hillary won 67% of the vote in 2006. Kid clearly wasn't one of those.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:26 PM on 02/15/2008

I did vote for her. And I'd vote for her again..as a Senator from New York, but not for President. But she has never been tested in a tough election. Giuliani pulled out of the race in 2000. I also think the Democratic Party in NY is very stogy and distrustful of new people. On the local level, there are still many corrupt bosses. Schumer and Clinton are also much too cozy with the big financial types...that's why Hillary voted for that God-awful bankruptcy bill and it explains a number of Schumer votes. I like Obama because he's not insider.
