It may be hard to recall the shield of inevitability that once surrounded Hillary Clinton, but a December 2007 cover story in a liberal magazine is a reminder....

...A Clinton superdelegate who served in Bill Clinton's administration said the former president "has screwed this thing up for her big-time. They need to send him out of the country for a long, long time. I am angry at Bill Clinton and I think there are other Hillary people who are angry at Bill, who felt that she was running a very good, solid campaign - she wasn't the exciting one, but she was the solid one - and then he came in and made it nasty, and single-handedly pushed away black voters."

I thought that the Hillary Campaign was running a pretty good race until Bill came out and started his "talking points".

While Bill may be popular and can remind people of the good parts of the 90's - he can also bring back up (by just talking) a lot of the stuff that we tired of - such as the wagging of his finger while lying to the country.

Another problem was Bill seems to have really believed he was a "Black President" - but once he went negative on a real Black Presidential Contender he got a lesson in the fact that - well - Bill Clinton is a white man from the south.

Well I was ambivalent about her and Obama until Edwards dropped out. At that point I would have voted for either of them. But for me - Hillary's campaign started to make some bad mistakes - and as far as I can tell she let the mistakes go forward and/or was party to them. So I voted for Obama.

For me, she messed this up for herself. But I will vote for her in the general if I have to.

Both Clintons are to blame. Bill, yes, majorly screwed up but Hillarys egotistical attitude of self importance is the main culprit. She is just not a decent human under it all.

The associations the Clintons have from the past and some right now reek of vested interests and backroom deals. Too many shady deals and deaths surround their rise to power.

America does not need any more Bush or Clintons in office. Enough is enough.

I really object to the vitriol in these posts and I believe Obama would object as well. I am an Obama supporter but if he doesn't win, I will have to vote for Hillary because McCain is so hawk. But I don't want to because of her cooperation in the Rovian tactics in SC--I bet Bill and others put her up to it, but she went along. And that's why I don't want her to be pres (even tho she'd be better than McCain) because she will go with the same old "conventional political wisdom". I don't think it's very wise...

90 percent of the country is generally in the same place and undivided, exactly where the Clintons are. The remaining extreme left and extreme right seem like they will never get together. If you mean we need someone to bring the extremists in our country together, it is fantasy and an exercise with no benefit for the country. What you really see are the old enemies of the Clinton health care plan and pundits who felt slighted in some way we know nothing about. They are going berserk to smear what were the best results for the country of any president in history. The Obama plan is a windfall for the insurance companies. How about some tangible issues as opposed to just hating Clinton for no rational reason except that you are for Obama.

Bill Clinton is a HUGE asset to any campaign - remember the "impeachment"? The ONLY reason they did that was to make Bill too radioactive for Gore to use on his campaign. Now they're trying to make Bill and Chelsea impossible to use when the truth is, you can't win an election without your family willing to get down in the trenches with you.

Thanks for rewriting history. Gore lost because he distanced himself from Clinton. That loser campaign could not even win his own state after he moved it from Washington, away from Clinton. Clintons approval rating went UP after the impeachment.
The same for Kerry, another loser campaign. Kerry was 15 points ahead of Bush and they lost. Obama is marginally ahead of McCain and behind in the electoral college. Clinton is ahead in the electorcal college.

Bill WAS (or could have been) an asset 8 years ago. Gore should have run on the "peace and prosperity" of the Clinton years but he didn't have the guts to embrace it.

Bill was an asset. Now he's just an ass.

Every time he opens his mouth he sounds old and bitter. His ego is so wrapped up in Hillary winning (proving the power of the Clinton name and Clinton connections and Clinton fundraising/money). Their sense of entitlement is annoying.

Plus he clearly thinks we should all be grateful to get a "two-fer" but we're not. I know he also wishes Obama would talk more about how great the Clinton years were, but I'm glad Obama -doesn't- kiss up.

Face it, Bill. You did many good things as President (and some bad), but much of America has moved on.

Bill Clinton doesn't make mistakes in politics. If he got off the reservation it was either planned or he intended to do it. the only question should be why? I sense that the clinton campaign has been as surprised as anyone by the outpouring of support for Obama. This isn't just democrats. Independents and even some republicans are energized by his message. He is a dynamic speaker and perhaps the clinton machine became overconfident to their peril. By the time they got over the surprise it may have been too late.

The Clintons have always been overrated. Bill never would have won in '92 if Perot hadn't siphoned off votes from Bush 41.

Because he was the Democrat who interrupted 12 years of Republican domination in the White House, winning conferred on him an air of competence that wasn't deserved. His administration was all about holding onto the office, and never about conviction.

Truth is Bill Clinton is a disturbed man, a sex addict without a moral compass, who never should have been allowed anywhere near the nuclear codes. Same with his hyper-ambitious "wife," the most cheated on woman in America, who lusts after power for its own sake.

It seems to me that Bill is just playing the role that Hillary used to play in their campaigns. He, as the candidate, was mellow and the super nice guy; she, as the 2-for-1 spouse, would hold the hatchet and would often go on attack/defense when needed.

I've always suspected that her role in this above scenario is what made her a very divisive force and disliked by many people, particulary disliked by Republicans.

Now that their roles have been reversed -- and he's playing the hatchet-carrier -- it's coming across very shocking. I suspect this is only because: 1) The public and/or media are not used to seeing Bill Clinton act or react in this manner -AND- 2) Bill Clinton not just a candidate's spouse: he is a ex-President.
