Texas Rep. Chet Edwards Endorses Obama

The Obama campaign has announced that Texas Representative Chet Edwards (who is President Bush's rep) is endorsing Barack Obama. Here is there statement:

"As the father of two young sons, I care deeply about the future of our nation, and that is why I am endorsing Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States. I believe Senator Obama can bring about real change in Washington--change that will make a positive difference for average working Americans struggling to keep up with the high costs of health care, gasoline and education," said Edwards, who represents the 17th Congressional District of Texas, which includes the home of President George W. Bush.

"Representative Edwards is a strong advocate for our men and women in uniform and I'm honored to have his support," Obama said. "Keeping faith with those who serve must always be a core American value and a cornerstone of American patriotism. Whether Democrat, Republican, or independent, we can unite with common purpose around the commitment to our servicemen and women that begins at enlistment and must never end."

"By voting for Senator Obama, we can say it is time to turn away from the divisive partisan politics of the past and work together for a brighter future for our children and our grandchildren. Now more than ever, we need a leader who can inspire us to do better, to be better. Barack Obama is that leader," said Edwards.

Edwards has earned bipartisan respect as a champion of veterans and military troops and their families. In 2007, as Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, he authored the largest increase in veterans' funding in the 77-year history of the Veterans Administration, and on March 4th of this year, he will receive the Veterans of Foreign Wars highest award given annually to only one Member of Congress.

"As someone who has spent most of my adult life fighting for veterans and for military troops and their families, I am convinced that Senator Obama will be a champion for better health care, housing and quality of life for those who have sacrificed so much for the American family. He knows that standing up for our troops, our veterans and their families is the right thing to do--for them and for our nation's security," said Edwards, who chairs the House Army Caucus.

"On behalf of my family and hard-working families all across Texas and America, it is a privilege for me to endorse Barack Obama for President."

According to Hillary we must hate these people and not work with them. This is carrying hope too far. Come on people we must build America on hate and partisanship.

I'm sure it would be too hard to figure out a flavor for Hillary. Too bitter, fattening, and a lot of frost bite!

And now Barack is receiving support in Vermont, an almost forgotten March 4th state. He is making sure to hear all Americans, regardless of that state's past red v blue voting record. Hello Hillary!

If Barack is able to win Vermont, Rhode Island and one of the big two that day, will Hillary finally see the writing on the wall? More importantly, will she read and heed it?

Did anyone see Hillary on Sunday? She started stealing Barack's speech lines about "change" "yes we will" and "hope" (then accuses him of him this; transference anyone?) and then has a woman needing medical assistance at her stump speech. She copies Barack in ways that makes me think she's in love with him.

I guess he's running the kind of campaign she always wanted for herself.

I am surprised Chet endorsed Obama. Good for him. Hillary and her old baggage, her dynasty,
her horrible IRS involving healthcare, she can
just keep it.

This endorsement is quite a capture for Obama. Chet Edwards' congressional district is made up of TX Senate Districts 5 and 22 - both represented at the State level by Republicans with plenty of red in them. This congressional strip includes Waco and Bryan College Station, with several colleges and universities in it. Shows to go ya that classic Obama reach that helps all kinds of places turn purple. One more plus: Chet Edwards is an indefatigable campaigner for whatever his beliefs are and is quite popular in this conservative congressional district. Way to go, Chet! and GO OBAMA deep in the heart of Texas.

Chet this is bogus crap. You can not possibly believe that Obama has a better track record of supporting veterans than Clinton. I don't care who you endorse but do not lie about your motivation.

Actually, it's easy to believe that Obama has the better track record. Clinton gave Bush the authority to send troops to go fight in a war based on intelligence that anyone with an ounce of common sense knew was bogus. What mattered to her more than the lives of the troops she was sending was that she look strong on national defense. Anyone who risks soldiers' lives just to improve their image doesn't support the troops and has no business being commander-in-chief.

Not to mention her subsequent support for the Kyl/Lieberman bill giving Bush the authority to bomb Iran, and her vote for cluster bombs:

And then there's the fact that she started out way ahead of Obama in popularity, name recognition, money raised, and the party machine behind her, and her campaign is in tatters. If she can't even run her campaign competently, how can she possibly be a good Commander in Chief, or President.

Here is part of Obama's track record of helping veterans. Please post all of what Senator Clinton has done so we can all compare.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, Obama passed legislation to improve care and slash red tape for our wounded warriors recovering at places like Walter Reed.
He passed laws to help homeless veterans and offered an innovative solution to prevent at-risk veterans from falling into homelessness.
Obama led a bipartisan effort in the Senate to try to halt the military's unfair practice of discharging service members for having a service-connected psychological injury.
He fought for fair treatment of Illinois veterans' claims and forced the VA to conduct an unprecedented outreach campaign to disabled veterans with lower than-average benefits.
Obama passed legislation to stop a VA review of closed PTSD cases that could have led to a reduction in veterans' benefits.
He passed an amendment to ensure that all service members returning from Iraq are properly screened for traumatic brain injuries.
He introduced legislation to direct the VA and Pentagon to fix disjointed records systems and improve outreach to members of the National Guard and Reserves.
Wonderful! Interesting that most dems in red-turning-purple states recognize that HRC on the ballot is "fatal" (McCaskill) - and they see how the independents break - always against sen. Clinton. Maybe the Clinton campaign should have looked at the Texas delegate rules a bit sooner - they managed not to "foresee" that this could go on past Super Tuesday, that smaller states could matter, that a lot of small donors could matter, that inspiration could matter... What would she do if Iran or Korea would act in a way she did not foresee? For a largely inherited campaign (name recognition, estbalishment support, staff) to be run like this is not a sign of good management. we have seen the last 7 years what damage a leader can do when being shielded from reality by a cocoon of trusted advisors, and loyalty trumping competence. And Now Sen. Clinton wants to to for the country what she did for her campaign?!
Well, actually McCaskill's 18 year old daughter realized that when she told her Mom she would never speak to her again if she didn't endorse Obama (Huffington Post).
Hip Hip Hooray.
Nice to see some intelligent people from the Lone Star State for a change.
We are so accustomed to hearing from brain dead folks like Delay and Bush, that I almost forgot there are normal human beings still living in the once democratic state of Texas.
