"Plagiarism"? Clinton Borrowed Her Husband's "Invisible" Theme

February 19, 2008 11:04 AM

stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust

As she rolled out her White House effort in early 2007, Sen. Hillary Clinton embraced a campaign theme that accused the Bush administration of turning working class families into "invisible Americans."

"For six long years, they have all been invisible," she told a crowd in Manchester. "Well, they're not invisible to us. And they're certainly not invisible to me. And when we retake the White House, they will no longer be invisible to the president of the United States. And we will begin to make progress together again."

Clinton's first television advertisement of the race -- titled "Invisible" -- took up the same theme. The line had a provocative and emotional touch and helped the New York Senator find her political legs on the campaign trail.

But was it original? Not entirely.

Clinton's "Invisible Americans" line echoes an anecdote that her husband, Bill Clinton, has included in speeches of his own for years. As far back as October 2002, the former president has repeatedly closed his talks around the world with an anecdote that pivots off his experiences in Africa to highlight the swaths of population that are "invisible" or have gone "ignored" by the governments of the world.

"When people meet each other on trails, one will say 'hello' or 'good morning' or 'how are you?' Bill Clinton said, describing the greeting of a Central African tribe a few months after his wife's Manchester address. "And the answer is not 'hello' or 'I'm fine' or 'how are you?' The answer, translated into English, is simple: 'I see you.' Think of how many people we never see, or we never see fully, because they're part of the Other or they're just invisible. Somebody's going to have to come in here and clean up after us today. Will they be seen? What about the people who are of different faiths and different politics and live in different places? Do we ever really see them?"

In March 2006, Bill Clinton told an audience, "it's obvious that all of us, as we become more diverse, these societies, we have people among us who are invisible to us, we don't have a clue what's in their real heads, what's in their real hearts and whether they feel like they're part of our communities."

The practice of sharing words and ideas is fairly customary among political candidates. And the fact that Hillary Clinton pivoted off of a popular theme from her husband's address hardly comes as a great surprise. Take, for instance, these two lines highlighted by MSNBC.

Sen. Clinton: "We ask ourselves, will we say when the fall comes: send me."
President Clinton: "Say to him what he has always said to America: send me"

In the last few days, however, the issue of political plagiarism has been thrust into the campaign spotlight after it was revealed that Sen. Barack Obama had generously lifted a segment from a speech of Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a co-chair of Obama's campaign. The two speeches were posted back to back on YouTube by a "rival campaign." And in both videos, the two men tout the power of "words," with each citing speeches by John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Thomas Jefferson.

In an interview with Politico on Monday, an official with the Clinton campaign accused Obama of downright "plagiarism." And on a conference call with reporters, Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern - a Clinton supporter - declared that the country needed a president who is "not just someone who can copy someone's homework."

Later in the day, officials with Clinton's camp stressed that, because Obama is a candidate who relies so heavily on his oratory it is important to note that his language isn't always his own. Especially if it comes in the defense of words.

Tellingly, however, neither McGovern nor Howard Wolfson, spokesperson for the Clinton campaign, would state that they or their candidate had never borrowed speech lines themselves.

And in a blog post on The New Republic, former Bill Clinton speechwriter David Kusnet scoffed at the idea that the Obama-Patrick similarities constituted a modicum of political scandal. Politicians, he noted, borrow from each other all the time. Even Sen. Clinton.

"If plagiarism is borrowing rhetoric without permission," Kusnet wrote. "Patrick most likely is happy to have Obama sound similar notes, such as hope and inspiration being more than 'just words.'" Even if Obama and Patrick didn't know each other, they might use some of the same phrases because similar public figures frequently draw on common streams of public rhetoric... Does what Obama did come close to what [Sen. Joseph] Biden did [in 1988]? Absolutely not. Next scandal, please."

are you trying to say now that using one word the same as some one else, is equal to actually basing your entire campaign on someone else's. The above article is referring to single words used by both Clintons, How many times has the word WE been used by anyone?

Want the next scandal?

The "Michelle Obama is a traitor to America" meme is still somewhat fresh. It got A LOT of radio talk show air yesterday (especially among "moderates" and "Fox News liberals"), and I see legs that will last well into Texas.

Bonus: the Republican frontrunner and his trophy bimbo gleefully picked up on it, and are tag-teaming Obama with it.

It's telling that at the crest of this damning and fatal "plagiarism scandal", Obama just strolled in and swept 10. Maybe "wifegate" will turn out to be a dud, too. No matter. They'll make more. And I say again: anyone who hires Howard Wolfson or Mark Penn, after this debacle of a campaign, ought to have their head examined. This stuff is LAME.

But beware of Clinton attack memes that are embraced by the R running for the third term of Bush. And his pill-popping bimbo with the Black baby (/snark).

How desperate can the Hillary camp get is yet to be seen but this is not good for her.
Someone who touts that she has learned from her mistakes shows quite the opposite in her actions.
The best way to interprete what she says to what she will be doing is to look at he very opposite of her position.

I am not proud of the educational system in this country. Apparently, it doesn't teach things like logic and reason, judging from the comments posted here.

I know, I know, that makes me unpatriotic, unAmerican.

The greatest plagierism in politics?

Ronald Reagan using the words of Franklin Roosevelt.

Plagiarism is the use of words or ideas of another, but presenting them as your own. Every candidate for president in the last 200 years has done this. It is extremely difficult to come up with a truly original idea, or a new way to say things, even now after the writer's strike.
The last democratic presidential candidate, who was a senator (not a governor) to win the presidency was JFK. And let us recall PROFILES IN COURAGE, and the accusations that JFK did not write that book.
I have many times seen candidates repeat what others have said as they speak, it is hard not to. Start putting key phrases from Hillary Clinton's speeches in to search engines and watch the matches pop up, and do it for any candidate. A good idea is a good idea, and we do not have an infinite number of words to express ideas with. A new idea is as rare as a clear day in Yosemite.

The Republican dishonesty and deception of the last fifeen years have become the new normal. Obama's disciples are furiously redefining plagiarism to conform to the behavior of their messiah. Let's be realistic. Hillary's echoing themes of her husband or other candidates is not plagiarism. General ideas about hope or change or inspiration (yuck) are not plagiarism. But Obama's or anyone else's repeating, verbatim, the speech of another politician and representing it as their own most certainly is plagiarism.

Amazing!! Then Hillary "plagiarized" her attack on Obama's "speeches" lifted from Healy's attack on Patrick's speeches.
It is pretty hard to say anything that hasn't been said before by someone else.

Why isn't Hillary attacking McInsane for his new ad: Ready to Lead on Day One
Oh, maybe she lifted that phrase from someone else.

Too many people have contradicted you on this.

ummmm,
She probably wrote it in the first place for crying out loud.

It is just as silly or ridiculous to claim this as plagerism as you claim the silliness of the other.

Why must we always descend to the level of the people we decry?

We sure have a lot of prime examples of that here.

Obviously, by the results in Wisconsin, that attack doesn't move votes. Positive differntiation can only work. People want leadership and the feeling that with a grass roots lobby, aggregately they can stand up to the special interests. Twentieth century thinking is that after the campaign, it's business as usual, and you can't alter the age old system. Obama's campaign is "yes we can". Is that naive, or are twentieth century thinkers living in denial that the energy crises and yes terrorism aren't going to be solved without a people's lobby that even the lobbyists fear. Don't fear Obama, fear "business as usual" because global waring
will kill us way before global warming. If the mistakes and tactics, or lack thereof, in the middle east aren't about oil, why are we fighting over deserts. It's not Isreal's fault, they can take care of themselves and they hardly have any oil. If the Sudan had an oil reserve we thought we could get at, we'd be fighting over Darfur. Yes kill Ben Laden and his evil allies, but change the supply/demand equation with clean alternative energy, and the balance of power, so to speak, will change. Hillary needs to focus in on real change, because that's what people will demand from Obama. And Obama reminds us that it won't be easy and will require sacrifice. Perhaps we have to stand up to the standard created by the greatest generation.

If you were hiring someone for a critical job you would want someone you KNEW was qualified, not someone you HOPED was qualified. The president you elect will effect you, your children, and your children's children the rest of their lives. My wife and I had the best times of our lives during the Clinton Administration. I worked in an auto assembly plant in Michigan and retired after 39 years. Our family has always discussed the presidential canditates before voting.
We than made our decision. My wife and I have never seen a presidential canditate we knew would not provide a future for our country and our family until Barack Obamma. Read issues from The Washington Post, Huffington Post, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, and others. Barack Obamma has lied about his dealings with the Chicago School System. Lou Dobbs had the Chicago School System Administrator on his show on CNN who said the school system was in
shambles. Obamma's wife told Larry King that her kids went to a private school and would never go to Chicago Public School. It was also mentioned on the "Tucker" show Obamma's wife said she would never support Hillary Clinton if she was the Democratic Nominee or
President. Is this who you want in the White House ? Obamma is also being investigated for
dealings/contributions from Antoin "Tony" Rezko. Antoin "Tony"Rezko,an indicted business man is accused of scheming to pressure
companies seeking state business for kick backs and campaign contributions, pouring thousands of dollars into Obamma"s campaign.
Rezko also helped Obamma increase the size of his yard in a transaction that Obamma now calls a "bone head" mistake.I hope that's not
Obamma's final answer. If you have kids in school, college or otherwise, do not vote for Obamma and expect support. Obamma is one of the best speakers I have ever heard. He could charm a stinger off a bee. BUT, there is no substance to his promises. Tonight he made promises to Houston voters costing 26 trillion dollars. The US would have to sell Hawaii. FAT chance.

Nicole (Texas) re.Feb 14...I agree 100%. I am contributing to the Presidential Canditate Nominee for the 1st time in my life. I was an admirer of John Kennedy in 1960 and Bobby Kennedy in 1968. When Ted Kennedy put his tale between his legs and run after Bobby Kennedy was assinated in Chicago I lost all respect for him. Barack Obamma is trying to portray himself as the savior. People have to know more about someone before voting for him/her to be President of the USA. With the arrogance he projects when speaking, it is so obvious of his self centered attitude, that he is more concerened with his accomplishments and "history making possibilities" than he would ever be with fulfilling the duties of the President of the United States. He reminds me of a black minister, up on stage, looking down at his croud, saying "yes we can" and then passing around the collection plate. No pun intended, these are someone elses words BUT they sure fit. A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for the "Victory Junction Kids". She started her carrier supporting under priveledged children. Carry on Hillary & RIDE 4 AMERICA. I am listening to Obamma in Houston right now. So far he has made 28 trillion $'s worth of promises. Take a look at his home town, Chicago. The school system is in shambles but that's OK because his kids go to private schools.

They cut off the loser to listen to the winner. A normal move. Bodlite, you really miss the point. The President of the United States needs to look and sound presidential. That's his job. He has his choice of dozens of the brightest thinkers in the country (including a national treasure, Susan E. Rice) to come up with ways to fulfill the Democratic Party Agenda and his part in architecting that agenda which will make our planet a better place to live in. My God, you surely don't think Ronald Reagan was a "Big Brain" man do you? Yet he has always, both during and after his presidency, had a higher rating of "greatness" than Jimmy Carter, who actually was a Big Brain man (which one had to be to make it into Admiral Rickover's program). Why? Because Reagan could look and sound presidential.

What we need is a Democratic President whose speeches uplift the populace and put them to work making the world a better place. He has repeatedly said, I can't do it alone, I need you!

Well, the way he gets us is with the quality and depth of his speeches. The plan, i. e. the platform, will all be laid out at the convention. Barak will have a say along with all other powerful Democrats. The plans will be implemented because Barak will have the consensus of the American People behind him. He will have both their love and their support. That's how he will get things done.

This evening Chris Mathews blind-sided a state senator demanding that he enumerate Obama's accomplishments. How many great accomplishments is a freshman black senator going to come up with in the land of powerful old white aristocrats, stuck in their ways, and quickly and permanently shooting down all fresh ideas filled with hope for the future? Obama would have to become President in order to get the kind of fresh approaches to our nation's problems (that are sorely needed) finally get put into action . . . oh yeh . . . that's what he's doing, isn't it.
Blessings - Chuck

They cut Hillary one because she's the loser(the only candidate not gracious enough to acknowledge her and congratulate her opponent on her speech) and because she's downright boring to listen to.

Is funny to hear the Clinton crowd scream and not see that the only strategy that Clinton has left is smear Obama, because everything else has failed. Americans so far proved that they can see through the doodoo

You guys need to get a life.

You actually think that because Hillary used a line that sounded something like Bill used years ago that there's some kind of "evil" plagiarism going on? What politician's speech is truly unique, original and without cliche?
You need to find something more valuable to spend your time doing. Hillary is a fantastic candidate for President, and the fact that a speech of hers reflects something her husband has said in the past has nothing to do with anything.

I wish you HuffPost staffers would stop railroading Hillary and let the public decide. You seem to think that your role in life is to elect Barack Obama. Or, maybe that is your role in life -- what your boss is telling you to say.

Beliefs about Obama ARE ALSO FULL OF PROJECTIONS and Brainwashing w/help by Republican Controlled Media.

He gave a nice speech at the Democratic Convention but for me it's been down hill on Obama ever since!

OBAMA IS A BICYCLE RIDER. His legs are kick down (on the heads of 50% of Democrats) as he bows to Republicans.

There is nothing inspiring about his speeches And SCREAMING AUDIANCES is like the BEATLES FANS. **ZERO to do with Governence**

Obama has a Situation Comedy view of what it takes to run our government and conduct diplomacy, and is ONE OF THE MOST DIVISIVE speakers for those who listen to the music
not the words.

Like Bush Obama is and informercialist.

As for College Republicans (expressing hatred for the Democrats while voting for Obama)with help from the GE-TV (Now has the Swiftboat funder making commercials for them, and CNN (which is to Journalism what painting by numbers is to art) They consistantly attack THE DEMOCRATIC FRONTRUNNER just like GORE, DEAN, AND KERRY!

And now that they BOOSTED Obama, they'll give McCain's attack dogs BILLIONS IN FREE ADVERTISING Just like the Swiftboat Liars.

With Kerry they had to lie, but w/Obama they'll use Obama's own book and drug use.

You'll begin to see stories that Moslems plan to take over the US from within and show pictures of Barak Hussien Obama.

And for those who believe that the world will like the idea of black man, think twice. When a Black man played the President of Egypt on Television (Lou Gossett) the Egyptian people WERE IRATE.
