BELGRADE, Serbia — Serb rioters broke into the U.S. Embassy Thursday and set fire to an office after a massive protest against Kosovo's independence that drew an estimated 150,000 people.

Masked attackers broke into the building, which has been closed this week, and tried to throw furniture from an office. A blaze broke out inside one of the offices and parts of the facade also caught fire.

Keep reading here.

Watch video from CNN of the the press conference held by the US State Department's spokesman, as well as footage of the fires and riots below:

I posted when the Kosovo independence story first showed up here, that it was big news ... big BAD news.

Hopefully Putin will be unable to fan the flames much further in Serbia, but don't count on it.

Where are all our resident Muslim-haters? They never get tired of telling us that only Muslims do this kind of stuff, and Christians always protest in calm and civilized manner.

This is also related to Chechyna and Georgian Muslims in their fight against Russia.

Both are waging guerilla wars against Russian refusal to allow those two nations independence & to protect their rights to substantial oil and Russia of course wants that oil too.

You pathetic ignor-anus. Georgians are Greek-Orthodox Christians.

Abkhazia, the separatist northern region of Georgia, is primarily Muslim, but they are allied with Russia, interestingly enough.

There are Muslims in Georgia, but they are not ethnically Georgian.

Georgian Muslims????

This thread is hitting a new low.

Georgians are Orthodox Christians.

You can take your camel slipper out of your mouth now, loo.

Im still trying to collect enough facts to formulate an opinion about the declaration of independence by Kosovo however what I do know, is US support is more about Russia then it is about helping Albanians get their own nation.

Our government is installing a Missile Defense Sheild across Europe, which Russia sees as an overt threat to its security & power & has already told the Chimp that he's triggered another nuclear arms race.

Kosovo is about Russia.

The CNN headline now is "Russia threatens force over Kosovo":

This is getting itrestiong. It should be the main thread here, but I guess the debates are more important than a superpower showdown.

The charred body found in the embassy was a male protester. I nominate him for the next Darwin Award.

The riot and attack against the US embassy didn't come as a surprise. The Serbs are not going to give up their land (rightfully so) because it's a popular decision with some western nations. The question that remains is how this situation will be handled. NATO can't really do much militarily because China and Russia won't stand for it. This is not a Balkan war with a country's provinces separating. This is territory being taken away by Albanians who left Albania in droves yet for some strange reason want to create a "greater Albania" (waving the Albanian flag in Kosovo made that pretty blatant) So what happens next? Violent protests won't disappear. I wonder what kind of spin foreign policy strategists are going to take on this one. Can't upset China - they're lending $$ for the Iraq war. Can't upset Russia - relations are already strained. Guess it's time for another quagmire booster.

Don't know if you saw it or not, but a large Albanian flag was being waved right behind McCain as he stood on the dais at a campaign rally of his yesterday.

Let water find its own level. Keep your dirty hands out of this, US! Imagine what if US had invaded Cuba for regime change, how many innocent people would have died and their country destroyed.
I read a recent article by UK Post Guardian how third generations of Vietnamese are still paying for the effect of Agent Orange, a diotoxin, used by the US to defoliate the jungle. One million Vietnmese are affected with cancer, miscarriages and their babies born deformed. 80 million litres of this damaging agent was poured into the jungles of Vietnam.
It stay in the soil for years and are washed down into the water table. Their drinking water is contaminated with diotoxin 200times above the permissible level. It will cause billions to clean up and so far US has donated a pittance of a few millions.
US is not part of the International War Crime Tribunal simply because they will be putting theselves onto the gulty seat.
This is besides the millions of tons of bombs dumped into Vietnam exceeding the total combinations of bombs dropped during the first and second world war.
There are still unexploded ordinance such as napalm taking a toll on children who picks them up because it looks like toys.
I am not proud of US for the cruelty and unstabilty they caused to the world although I thank them for ending the second world war.
The world admires the small guy who fight against the big bully and wins. It is the hearts and mind of people that overcome incredible odds. I salute the Vietnamese for their courage to stand up to a big bully for their freedom.

No wonder Iraq is a criminal debacle, the IQ challenged criminals in the WH have been following the Vietnam debacle playbook. It's all starting to make sense now.

The current situation in the Balkans is the outcome of a strategic maneuvering by the USA against Russia. If you haven't noticed we have re-entered a new phase of the cold war between Russia and America.
The Kosovo issue is directly related to the American Foreign Policy which is expressed by NATO. The Americans want to abolish Russian influence in the Balkans and therefore, are setting up friendly "country-states" that will be under US dominance (NATO) and not Russian. The problem for the US is that although Greece,Romania and Bulgaria are in NATO they still have close ties to Russia since they share a common religion of Orthodoxy. Unfortunately, Serbia has to pay the price since they are still loyal to Russia. However, this doesn't exclude the other orthodox nations. Greece is just about to lose its Northern state called Macedonia by the US supported FYRO Macedonia (created by Communist Tito) and Bulgaria has similar problems with Fyrom. In Romania, the Hungarian minority has already started talks of independency.
The Bush motto of 'your either with us or against us' has just been applied to the Balkans. The Albanian Muslims are the vehicle.
Greece, your next.

I was following you until you made the leap from old Soviet alliances to the modern EU memberstate Greece.

Sorry it ain't gonna happen. The EU will have no part of it, and according to their 1999 would probably raise their own non-NATO military force to stop it.

Part of the Russian influence in Serbia is, yes, they are both Eastern Orthodox and use the Cyrillic alphabet.

Another and most important aspect is the fact that the US has once again betrayed Serbia to its enemies. It happened first after WWII when the US abandoned pro-American royalists and turned the country over to the communists. The second occasion was in 1999 when the US armed and trained Croat and Albanian fighters against Serbians. This Kosovo betrayal is the latest and perhaps the least forgiveable.

If the US wants to end Russian influence in the Balkans they really blew it in Serbia.

Serbia still has the support of other Eastern Orthodox countries like Greece, Romania, Macedonia, and Montenegro. They all know that if the US and NATO can get away with aiding Albanian Muslim expansion in Kosovo, they will get away with it elsewhere.

The Hungarian situation is different. That was Hungarian land taken from Hungary post WWII. As a Hungarian-American I'm pissed that Hungary is half the size that is was before the two world wars. The superpowers cut off the mineral rich portions of Hungary for themselves absorbing the Hungarian population and forbidding them to speak the Hungarian language. Hungary should get its land back.

P.S. If it wasnt for Hungary you would all likely be muslims right now. Hungary kept the Ottoman turks out of Europe in the East while the French fought the Moors on the western front. Thank god!

One question: "Why did the U.S. ambassador, knowing Kosovo and Serbia to be a tinderbox, throw in a lighted match?" If Bush, Rice and their ambassadorial monkey had to pay for a new embassy out of their own pockets, then they would have kept their mouths shut.

Why is this merely a substory? Is it because we had already evacuated the embassy? I swear, the press and even HuffPo is way too concerned about an 8 year old "exposé" about Sen. McCain. They don't even care about the fact that the US embassy was torched. They're obviously not allocating any of their extensive foreign policy expert resources to covering such a pivotal story that foreshadows a greater conflict brewing in that region. I guess that they'll wait for Russia's Putin to send troops to Serbia's aid in quelling their rebellion before they focus any attention to it. By then it will already be too late. Russia will use Kosovo as an example to its beloved Chechnya. Their message, "attempt at rebellion will be met with obliteration."
Whatever...I had high hopes for HuffPo to rise above the "Obama V. Clinton: Round 34" route. I guess that I was wrong.
