No one can accuse New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin of hiding his emotions. During a live TV interview, he told two reporters that he wanted to have "a good one on one" with their boss in the parking lot because of an upcoming report on his work schedule.

Nagin also complained about the "vile, angry people" who comment on blogs. Asked if he's worried about his safety, the mayor said: "If somebody approach me wrong, I'm going to cold cock them. That's the bottom line. You can come with that foolishness if you want, but you'll see a side of Ray Nagin that you haven't seen."

Whenever I think of Mayor Nagin I see fields filled with flooded busses and hear him saying: "We didn't have any way to get the people out."

To get the REAL story on the buses, read the following story.

Speaking of New Orleans...Tavis Smiley is sponsoring a wonderful conference on the City after Katrina, being aired on C-Span...everyone should see it or hear it at their website.

He should run for Mayor of NYC or better yet, President.

Nagin's frustration with his entire support structure (or lack of one) is understandable...
Yes, the press could have squelched his schedule, but his staff should have "had his back".

The blame for Katrina's effect and aftermath is wholly vested with the Bush administration and Congress.

Let me clear up some misconceptions. First, this was a legitimate inspection of a past year's schedule which the mayor objected to. We here in NOLA have questions regarding the mayor's leadership in recovery. The natural reaction is to look at what he's been doing, which is what he didn't want. A Freedom of Information act was filed to get this public information, and his family was not put at risk at all.

Secondly, the accompanying picture is part of this flap in that the mayor was filmed laughing at a demonstration of military SWAT team weaponry and posturing about being a "bad boy". Those of us who have previously asked him to take a stand against our youth being hunted on the streets do not appreciate this arrogant redneck playing this out as a race war so that he can cover his laziness, callousness and utter incompetence. James Carter of the City Council has diligently called meetings together, met with community leaders, and done many things Mayor Nagin has NOT. It's not a black issue, it's a failure to perform issue.

What do you expect from a Democrat? The people of New Orleans really do deserve better.

From the governor to the mayor, the people of New Orleans were let down by Democrats. Period.

Blame Bush. Blame Bush. Blame Bush. I know the script.

But I do feel sorry for the people of New Orleans. And the truth of the matter is that they were let down by dimwit Democrats.

p.s. It would be worthwhile for Democrats to rally behind someone who speaks english. Education does matter.

There's enough blame to go around. ALL are guilty. And even prior administrations for NOT keeping up with the repairs and modernizing.

DerekRC, Nagin was/is a Republican - mind, body & soul from what I have read. He, like so many politicians, have a tendency to become whatever will get them elected.

Since the levees that failed and flooded 80% of the city of New Orleans were designed, maintained and built by the Army Corps of Engineers, a FEDERAL agency, I believe the people of New Orleans were "let down" by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT and the POTUS George Bush who gave a political appointment as head of FEMA to an old Texas buddy who's only criteria for the job was that he was an Arabian Horse judge! George Bush, a REPUBLICAN didn't send the National Guard to New Orleans until almost a WEEK AFTER the levees were breached. AND, the National Guard troops in LA were (almost 75%) in IRAQ fighting a BULLSHIT "war" that our REPUBLICAN President, Bush, got us into in order to make rich men richer!

Damn, this 'vile, angry person' is surprised that he is can take time out of his schedule of sucking up to wealthy white investment companies, looking to loot NOLA's land at flood sale prices. (Sorry about the run-on sentence)

I feel empathy for Nagin, but he makes me cringe. Too many stories coming out on his weird, off behavior. The 'Chocolate Factory' T-shirts were a very very weird concept - cringe!

Nagin lived with the flood waters, no water, no food...what did you cretins do? Watch the floating bodies on your TVs? Did you go to your fridges and grab that cold water? Well I didn't have any..no power, running water, food...that was Katrina, then came Rita. And NOLA flooded again.

Nagin was there going out on the boats pulling folks out of the water...and it was Bush that caused it. Taking funds out of the Levee Maintainance and sending it to Iraq. It was Nagin that was there...Bush wasn't.

You want to know why the people in NOLA are not all back to normal..HOMES. Theirs are gone.Jobs are gone, rent is 100% more. Baker the Repub rep said," We could'nt get rid of public houseing so God did." That was the poor's homes.

So what has been done? They tore down public houseing that was not hurt by Katrina...and thousands of folks are living on the streets. There is no houseing, so no jobs...formaldahuye in the trailors killing and making folks sick.

So tell me you grand folks... you Christians...Nagin was here...doing what the rest of us were doing...where were you? Did you help clean out homes? did you take in a hopeless family? or do you only troll...well get back under your bridge.

- Nagin was there going out on the boats pulling folks out of the water.

Not...Nagin was holed up in the Hyatt. He never pulled anyone from a boat. The only time he left the Hyatt was to take a shower on Air Force 1 and take a ride through town on military vehicle with Bush.

Sorry bro...Nagin is not the person you're painting him to be here. I appreciate your empathy for we New Orleanians, but Nagin ain't no hero....not even close.

He's a corrupt bastard who's pumping money to Republican cronies and Texas companies.

Note: The Lt. Governor, Mitch Landrieu was out in a boat pulling people off rooftops. He unfortunately lost the mayoral election to Nagin.

Thank you AsheDambala for saying it best. When I first read keir's post I wanted to refute the Nagin in a boat comment but I find myself fighting so much with people about N.O., the levee breaches and our politics that I just didn't have the energy on this one. Mitch was the one in the boat. Nagin was holed up in a hotel and I'm pretty sure he barely got wet.
But, to keir and you both I say, we New Orleanians have to stick together. It's OUR city. (Did you ever think anything so ridiculous and so horrifying and so life changing would happen to us and much of the world would say we deserved it for living here or having politicians the rest of the world didn't like?! Isn't this CRAZY?)

Ray "school bus" Nagin is one of the most incompetent mayors since Dennis Kucinich.

He's shocked that people are critical of him?

Just goes to the shows the stupidity of the voters in New Orleans. The same type of voters that keep re-electing Kucinich to Congress.

The definition of Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Yes, blame it on the people of New Orleans. THEY must be so stupid, huh? After all, good, intelligent people don't get ABANDONED by their government, right? We New Orleanians must have done SOMETHING to deserve our fate, right?
Keep telling yourself that. It'll ease your fears and make you feel better.

Can you please put up a different picture. I have no particular opinion of Mayor Nagin, but the picture you have chosen is first, of no relation to the story, he did not say, "I am going to kill you with a assault rifle." Second it plays on the stereotype of African Americans as violent gun totting criminals. The picture is used irresponsibly especially since I imagine that it was taken in the context of an anti-violence context. So please take it down.

The cry went forth: "four years of Nagan was better than eight of Mitch." New Orleans has paid the price for his election. He's just not up for the job. It could be a lot better and the private sector is trying, but the public sector is a dismal failure.

I have yet to meet a single person who voted for Nagin.

I went to law school with both Mitch and his (now) wife, Cheryl. Mitch is a fine person and a true public servant. He would have made a great mayor.

Much like an employee being terminated, the mayor will try any way to move the discussion from the topic to something else. He has failed, along with the entire state government,to rebuild after Katrina. Mississippi of all places is moving ahead and doing okay. The mayor, the state government and Dem machine have failed the state. They do not want to discuss that. Anyting they can do to avert the discussion, they will.

dezzertguy, contrary to your 'observations', many of the citizens of MS are not 'doing okay'. They, in some cases are in the same limbo as those in LA. And for future reference, MS areas received a fraction of the devastation as LA areas. MS was hit by a major hurricane--LA was hit by a major hurricane 2) the failure of a Federal Levee system located in a major urban area of New Orleans AND 3 weeks later a second hurricane hit sw LA which made the situation in LA a lot more complicated.

Secondly, your tired statement about the mayor and Democratic state gov't is not under discussion anymore because it has been proven that the fault is not there. Read the public records that show factual info rather than relying on words of Brownie and the like who were trying to cover their butts.

Half right about Mississippi. Barbour saw to it that the casino's and the rich whites got the rebuild money and assistance. The middle class and poor of both colors are still having to suck it up. In both N.O. and Mississippi being rich and well connected made all the difference.

I am a native New Orleanian. Ray Nagin is a bozo. I don't know anyone who will admit to voting for him. Before you think too badly of all New Orleanians, please remind yourself that George Bush is the POTUS.

I would never think badly of ALL New Orleanians! The food and culture is too good to do that. I would think badly of those New Orleanians who actually did vote for Nagen. He proved himself to be incapable during Katrina. How he got re-elected is beyond my ability to comprehend!
