Clinton Advisers: Shouldn't Have Used Bill So Prominently

To her longtime friends, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton sounds unusually philosophical on the phone these days. She rarely uses phrases like "when I'm president" anymore. Somber at times, determined at others, she talks to aides and confidants about the importance of focusing on a good day's work. No drapes are being measured in her mind's eye, they say.

And Mrs. Clinton has begun thanking some of her major supporters for helping her run for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"When this is all over, I'm really looking forward to seeing you," she told one of those supporters by phone the other day.

Mrs. Clinton has not given up, in her head or her heart, her quest to return to the White House, advisers say. But as resolute as she is, she no longer exudes the supreme confidence that was her trademark before the first defeat, in Iowa in January. And then there were more humbling blows, aides say: replacing her campaign manager on Feb. 10, then losing the Wisconsin primary and her hold on the women's vote there last Tuesday.

If she is not temperamentally suited to reckon with the possibility of losing quite yet, advisers say, she is also a cold, hard realist about politics -- at some point, she is known to say, someone will win and someone will not.

"She has a real military discipline that, now that times are tough, has really kicked into gear," said Judith Hope, a friend and informal adviser to Mrs. Clinton, and a former chairwoman of the New York State Democratic Party. "When she's on the road and someone has a negative news story, she says, 'I don't want to hear it; I don't need to hear it.' I think she wants to protect herself from that and stay focused.

"That said, she knows that there will be an end," Ms. Hope said. "She is a very smart woman."

Over take-out meals and late-night drinks, some regrets and recriminations have set in, and top aides have begun to face up to the campaign's possible end after the Texas and Ohio primaries on March 4. Engaging in hindsight, several advisers have now concluded that they were not smart to use former President Bill Clinton as much as they did, that "his presence, aura and legacy caused national fatigue with the Clintons," in the words of one senior adviser who spoke on condition of anonymity to assess the campaign candidly.

I have learned from the Clintons, that some people truly believe that they are pre ordained to rule, no matter how flawed they are in their thinking. That grace and class is something taught. That politics is a game of deception, and stupidity is not a characteristic that is absent in America. Americans seem to live for confrontation even when it is meaningless. We hide our true self behind our abilities to deceive. I just hope that America can for once use its common sense and recognize that America is in a mess at the moment. The world has caught up with us and now we have much citizen work to do. A divide world is not safe for anyone. And everyone in it is responsible to someone else. This country has needed change for a very long time. The human toll on people in Iraq is extremely high. And the end is not sight yet. One day Americans are going to find out that life has balance. You pay for you past sins in a painful way if you don't honor what those lessons in life should have taught you.

Absolutely right...Clinton fatigue. Don't get me wrong, I think Bill was a brilliant president in terms of doing good things for this country (sans NAFTA). However, his weakness for interns or pretty faces put this nation into a downward spiral that absolutely fatigued us with DNA, lies, that really ugly lady who recorded Monica..ugh. Clinton handed the Republicans ammunition at every turn, so did Hillary (travel gate, whitewater, etc.). We still will have to endure fundraising gate once that story hits and Hillary is forced to testify. There's too much shade around these two people...you see them, but what else is there, lurking.

Oh, I don't have any problem with that. I'm a strong supporter of Obama, but keeping focused on the race and staying positive by not reading negative press seems like a good idea for her. I'm sure her staff would call attention to anything truly important in those negative articles. So I don't think that means she'd be a head-in-the-sand President like Bush. It's the nasty attacks she's using that really disappoint me and motivate me to do more to ensure Obama extends his winning streak.

IS FREE SPEECH NO LONGER HONORED IN HUFFINGTON POST? MANY COMMENTS REMOVED IN THIS SUBJECT MATTER. WHAT IS GOING ON?

By Hermie Rotea

Just asking.

Anyway, I am amending my comment I submitted last night that was axed or censored to make it more acceptable. I guess it was too strong and thus misunderstood.

Like I said, I observed that Senator Barack Obama has not been clean in his attacks on rival Senator Hillary Clinton. He has been criticizing the same old folks the same old dirty politics of the Status Quo and the same corrupt Washington establishment.

Yet he himself has employed the same dirty politics when he twisted the positions of Clinton on the issues of Universal Healthcare and NAFTA in his recent campaign mailings that angered and prompted her to scold him with Shame on you Barack Obama.

He claimed that Clinton would force the poor to buy medical coverage even if they could not afford it even to the extent of going after their low income, which is not true. She said they would be subsidized with government aid.

Clinton also never said that Obama opposed Universal Healthcare. She only disagreed with him on how to implement it. In her opinion, his plan would lead to 15 million Americans uninsured.

On NAFTA, Obama also twisted Clinton position. He said she said it improved the economy. In fact, she criticized NAFTA for outsourcing jobs abroad. So Senator Obama, stop your own dirty politics and be honest. You owe your rival for nomination an apology.

He has also been accusing Clinton as the candidate of the Status Quo and the corrupt Bush-Cheney-McCain establishment in his campaign speeches, although he has stopped naming her, but it is clear that he always alluded to her.

Am I missing something here? Are not Obama and Clinton both opposition senators with no ties to the White House, and who have been criticizing the Bush Administration for violating the Constitution, like engaging in illegal Iraq and Afghan wars based on fear, oil and profits?

How is that, Huffington Post?

Yes, they closed the commentary and I think the story is not longer featured. The Muff was for a brief period a beacon of sanity and seemingly progessive thinking.

No longer- it's fanatical pro Obama population has more in common with Boosh fundamentalists than anyon else.

Sad.

@Hrotea - I'm seeing comments deleted more because of their length. A great many posters are sick of 500-word posts and thus FLAG them. I don't see a lot getting scrubbed for content. Just break it down. Concise to the point is usually pretty safe

Hillary's Healthcare

Hillary's plan for universal coverage would "force" everyone to purchase insurance even if they can't afford it.

* it says nothing about the poor

Hillary Clinton hasn't been a leader in the Senate during the six years that she has enjoyed a "safe seat" being New York's senator. That said, I have considered and still consider her as the only choice, when there ar no other choices, to the kabal that has seized the country under the banner of a Republican flag (to the dismay of Eisenhower Republicans). But cant' we do better? Isn't there someone out there who hasn't been a crony for the military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned about? Isn't there someone out there who will fight to preserve our constitutional system of checks and balances? If not than we are going to need someone with fresh ideas to deal with the pending economic calamnity that twenty seven years of Reaganomics have spawned. We'll need an out of the box thinker who doesn't come to the challenge with legions of people who hope he or she will fail. That's what Obama is about. He's David against the Goliath of an economic tsunami. No one thought that David would win. But at least there wasn't a substantial number of Isrealites hoping that he'd lose. I can't say that Hillary will enjoy David's level of support. Nader tells the truth. He has for forty years. He can't be elected but maybe he can force the focus of the candidates to shift their messages toward the problems that really matter. Maybe an electable candidate who champions the causes that Nader amplifies will emerge. Just keep posting and demanding what you want. The electorate has never been more empowered. The politicians are scared of what we say and what we write. Keep posting and fighting for the causes that are critical to our future. The candidates don't matter. The positions that they assume do. They'll adjusst their positions to our demands because they are, after all, politicians.

Obama is being promoted by the very same ultra-rich eastern liberals that promoted JIMMY CARTER. Former Carter National Security Advisor for CARTER, Ziggy Brzezinski, David Rockerfeller and George Soros are Internationalists, I don't see any of them too concerned with the average American

It seems to me that the most important connection to Bush is the one that Hillary left out of her analysis.

Bush is the rightwing nutjob that pulled the trigger on shock and awe. As a result there are 4000 dead Americans, thousands more physically and mentally wounded, and a trillion dollars missing from our treasury (actually it's really missing from the Chinese treasury since we had to borrow to pay for this excusion). Even more, Bush accomplished his goal of bombing Iraq back into the Stone Ages and a million Iraqis dead and wounded paid the ultimate price while millions more have been upended completely.

And Hillary Clinton is an unrepentent member of the group of Democratic members of Congress who colluded with the Republican majority to load that gun and put it in George Bush's hands. And that my friends is the real vast rightwing conspiracy.

Let's keep this simple so everyone understands what is happening.

1. Hillary went negative on Obama as of New Hampshire. She went over the top negative in South Carolina, which cost her that state. Her campaign adviser is Mark Penn, a friend of Karl Rove and HILLARY is the one using Rove tactics to get elected. (Look for more vicious, negative mailings from Hillary in the next few days.)

2. Obama's mailings are factual, although he could have left out the word "boon" on the NAFTA mailing, which is what Hillary is grabbing on to, to disguise the fact that BILL WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PASSING OF NAFTA (and she was backing it at that time).

3. Ralph Nader has just declared his 3rd party bid for president.

4. HILLARY CANNOT WIN THE ELECTION, her negative numbers are too high and her "experience" is all bad baggage & lackluster voting in the Senate. What important bills she did vote on, SHE VOTED REPUBLICAN, including the right to cluster bomb near public areas in war zones.

5. IF HILLARY STAYS IN THE PRIMARY RACE AND KEEPS USING NEGATIVE ATTACKS AGAINST OBAMA, SHE WILL COST OBAMA THE ELECTION!

Is that what you want? President "ignore my lobbyists hanging all over me" McCain for 4 years? President "more wars" McCain?

NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL DEMOCRATS TO COME TOGETHER TO SUPPORT OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT.

When the time comes, they will. There's a couple of months left of this gamemanship and then the Dems will coalesce around their candidate.

Don't be worried about a few Nadarites and the imposter trolls on this site.
