Fauxbama, Finally! Fred Armisen Is SNL's New Barack Obama

After nine weeks of strike darkness and a week of breathless rumors ETP can confirm: SNL regular Fred Armisen is Saturday Night Live's Barack Obama, adding the junior Senator from Illinois to the show's 33 years of political impressions.

The show had been in a bind since the beginning of the season, disadvantaged by having only one black male cast member, Kenan Thompson, whose fuller body type was inconsistent with the Senator's slim, lanky frame. Though Thompson had been rumored to be trying to lose weight for the gig - one which could well lead to a meaty recurring role playing the President of the United States - earlier this week founder/executive producer Lorne Michaels told several press outlets that the search for someone to play Obama was on, both inside and outside the current cast. The decision to cast Armisen was made on Thursday, and will be officially announced to the world tonight at 11:30 ET when the live broadcast kicks off.

Expect to see some controversy from this decision: Though Armisen has played an ethnically diverse range of characters before - including Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Prince - the minority of black faces on SNL has been noted in the past, and the chance to give this plum role to a non-black player will surly generate debate (never mind resuscitating the old "Is Obama black enough?" question). Still, there is precedent: Darrell Hammond's impression of Jesse Jackson, Horatio Sanz as Aaron Neville, Maya Rudolph as Liza Minelli — on SNL, if you can play the part and be funny doing it, that's enough. The verdict from the dress rehearsal audience was generally enthusiastic ("Very funny!" said one audience member who approved of the Armisen decision; "Hilarious!" agreed two other young men wearing Hillary stickers, both of whom felt SNL had been more than fair to their candidate). "Funny" should blunt controversy somewhat, since that is the raison d'etre of the show (agree/disagree in comments).

Steve Martin
is also set to make a cameo, along with Mike Huckebee, who is set to do a campaign-appropriate bit for "Weekend Update." There's also a walk-on by Obama Girl - the actual Obama Girl, Amber Lee Ettinger. Also debuting tonight is new cast member Casey Wilson.

No reason to pick a black guy to play Obama.
He's as white as he is black.
Maybe Halle Berry could play Obama.

I'm sure some of the shows themes appealed to downtrodden Hillary supporters and I found some funny spots. The Tina Fey opening with Steve Martin, I thought was quite good. These days I think "30 Rock" is the better show.

The candidate impressions seemed really weak. Other than getting the costume and a sparse few body gestures in place they did little to convey the candidates. Seperated from the debate setting, I doubt I'd even recognize the impressions. I think Amy Poeller might be able to work into the Hillary impression but last night she wasn't very impressive. Fred Armisen, while giving it a try, seems completely unmatched for the job. Let's hope SNL recognizes that and is already busy searching more outside the cast. Given the weakness of that "fauxbama" impression... SNL has good reason to be pulling for "the b****". ;)

The slant on the democratic race seemed needlessly heavy and made it harder to enjoy. Lets hope SNL has got its need for advocacy out of the way, as it detracts from the fun. All the candidates are rather goofy in there own ways, and I'd enjoy seeing SNL play with that. It might also help people some of the people, way too wrapped up in this race to lighten up a bit. I'm a bit concerned SNL may be stuck in the habit of doing same-old, cynical, anger based comedy. I guess I've put up with a lot of that in recent years, but I really want to step away from that. This show has has now been working that meme so long, you kinda wonder whether they even have the stuff to produce less divisive comedy. Seems like "time for change" here to.

The only time they really treated a candidate playfully was with Huckabee, who of course, was in on the joke.

Maybe Obama needs to join the cast. :)

I was so disappointed with SNL. The writing was awful, nothing was funny -- was ackward and strange. Neither Obama nor Clinton was anything remotely close enough to be funny. And Tina Fey's use of SNL to propogate her own political agenda was a shame to the show and network. I watch SNL to be entertained, not to be told what to do. Fire all the writers (esp Tina Fey) and start over, or I'll skip SNL for this political season and find my real political satire elsewhere.

Oh, give it up. First of all, Tina Fey is no longer a writer for SNL. She was the guest host last weekend. There's no need to fire her...that would be impossible.

Secondly, her "endorsement" was a joke. Last season on 30 Rock, her character said that she really wanted to vote for Obama, but would probably secretly vote for McCain. So what, has she now endorsed all three candidates? It's a comedy show. I kind of doubt Tina Fey intended "Bitch is the new black!" to be taken that seriously...

I waited so long for the writers strike to be over to watch political satire on SNL -- and was so deeply disappointed last night. The writing on the show is really bad -- not only not funny -- but just ackward and strange. I'm thinking that maybe they need to go back on strike again.

The "debate" didn't depict either candidate in enough of an accurate way to be even remotely funny. And for Tiny Fey to blatantly use the show as a pulpit to get Clinton votes was in extremely poor taste, left a really bad taste in my mouth. I come to SNL to be entertained, not to be convinced to vote for someone. Sorry to say, I will skip SNL this political season unless they get rid of all the writers (esp Tina Fey) and start over.

This was so bad... A new low for SNL.
Tina Fey must be working for Clinton campaign.
They just turned everything upside down. Like it was Obama that was aggressive in the debate (pushing Clinton)... In reality I saw Clinton invading his personal space.
Those Clintonistas are shameless.

There is so much to say about this that.........
I wont even bother saying it.
You all know how stupid this is,
it says so much about SNL on its own.

Wow I was hoping that SNL would pick a black actor
(or mulato if you will) to play Obama. As an African American their casting choice doesn't make sense. Does it make sense to have a Mexican or Asian play GWB ? No it doesn't so why chose Armisen. SNL is out of touch.

I thought Fred Armisen came across as too macho. Barack Hussein Obama is much more effeminate than that. Fred needs to reach down and pull out a black Barney Fife.

When did Iran's president Mr Ahmahdinejad assume dictatorial powers?
Last I heard he won a popular election and will have to stand for reelection if he wishes to remain president. Can HuffPo please direct me to the news stories about Mr Ahmahdinejad's successful coup.

I don't watch tv but the photo of Fauxbama looks good. I heard that some of the more conservative shows are going all out trying to make fun of Obama but I guess that's what can be expected from shallow entertainment.

As a former casting director, I was VERY disappointed in Fred Armisen's "Barack Obama" on SNL. Year after year of seeing great characters like Amy Pohler playing Hillary Clinton and Darryl Hammond playing Bill Clinton, I've come to expect greatness. Armisen's mannerism's were just off. Darryl Hammond seems to be able to study and move exactly like Bill Clinton and Al Gore. I think the thing that really bothered me was, he didn't sound a thing like Barack Obama. I think he needs some help from Amy & Darryl, because it just didn't hit the mark. Hopefully he will get better.

hotshortie said what I want to say.

Fred Armison is one of my All-Time Favorite SNL players, from his South American comic to his Prince imitation.

But Fred Armison gets an F as Obama. He didn't sound like Obama, he wasn't funny as Obama.

Armison's Obama might be a sign that he also opposes Obama and supports Hillary, which, if true, should make Rachel Sklar and Erica Jong happy.

But as a comedy routine, Armison's Obama was just not funny.

Or just a sign that he was out of his depth--he has done a lot of great impressions--latino, white, black, avian--but he just didn't nail Obama.

It was brillant! You'd be tooting it all over HuffPost and it would have been on every news cast a dozen times if hadn't made such a mockery out of Obama's run. Tina Fey and Amy Pohler just siad what needed to be said...too bad they weren't able to say it a little sooner!

I agree Fred Armison flunked as Obama. It didn't sell, wasn't funny, and after all the hype it was a big disappointment. Amy Pohler shares a strong commonality with Hillary: they are both tiresome and need to go away. Amy, please move on already! Tina Fey's pro-women rant may have been the lowest point in SNL history. We don't want lectures, we want entertainment.

To put the 'Cult' meme to bed once and for all, a comparison of the liberal mindset vs. the conservative:

Conservatives are cultists due to their inability to think for themselves, and feeling that they NEED to follow someone or someTHING.
