COLUMBUS, Ohio — Sen. Barack Obama said Saturday that the Republican presidential nominee in waiting, Sen. John McCain, has lobbyists as top aides and "many of them have been running their business on the campaign bus while they've been helping him."

The Democratic presidential hopeful also said McCain's health care plans reflect "the agenda of the drug and insurance lobbyists, who back his campaign and use money and influence to block real health care reform."

Jill Hazelbaker, a spokeswoman for McCain, said the Arizona senator "has been an agent for change for his entire career _ he is the greatest change agent in our party _ and we plan to highlight that record in this election."

Obama has criticized McCain increasingly in recent weeks, while running off 11 straight primary and caucus victories over his Democratic rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Polls taken during the primary season show that independent voters are drawn in large numbers to both Obama and McCain, suggesting the two men would compete intensively for their support if they wind up opposing each other in the general election this fall.

Obama made his remarks as he campaigned for votes in the March 4 Democratic primary in Ohio, with 141 national convention delegates at stake.

He made health care a focus of his campaign day, visiting a hospital diabetes unit. At one point in a discussion with doctors and nurses, the talk turned to prevention of the illness in youngsters.

"If we just cut out soda pop," it would make a difference, he said.

Asked at a later news conference about the issue, he said he hopes schools will "re-examine how easily they make soda available."

Citing an increase in childhood obesity and diabetes, he said if children "are consuming vast amounts of soft drinks chock full of corn syrup, then we should, you know, consider whether we want to maybe have at least some zones like schools where they have to drink water once in a while."

Obama singled McCain out for criticism twice during the day, at one point saying that the Republican's health care proposals are worse than anything proposed in the race between himself and Clinton.

He characterized them as "more of the same Bush health care policies that haven't worked in the past and won't work today."

"It's a tax break that doesn't guarantee coverage and doesn't make sure that health care is affordable for the working families who need it most," he said.

Obama broadened his criticism to McCain's ties to lobbyists in general, saying, "He takes their money and has put them in charge of his campaign."

The Illinois senator returned to the subject later, when he said it was indisputable that McCain's "got his top advisers in this campaign are lobbyists, that many of them have been running their business on the campaign bus while they've been helping him."

An aide said Obama was referring to Charlie Black, and pointed to a recent published report that said the McCain strategist, who is a registered lobbyist, does a lot of work by phone from McCain's campaign bus.

In rebuttal, Hazelbaker accused Obama of trying to distract attention from his record and resume. She said he has "no national security experience and plans billions of dollars in tax hikes."

The saga of McCain's disgusting grovelling and pandering continues ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

The military-industrial-media complex with its profit margins lives!

Why change things? McCain is almost hysterical about getting into the White House and picking up and continuing the Bush Disaster. In other words, it will be a third term Bush II. Already he is talking about every person for him/herself in those myriad circumstances of devastation to families who are innocent of any blame. For example, the 40 0r 50 million without health insurance don't need socialistic bigger government running things and telling us what to do. He wants to let working families decide on their health choices (never mind his ignoring the root problem of those without not being able to afford the premiums in the first place). There's even more, such as sucking up to the ultra-Right with talk of nominating "strict constructionists in the mode of Roberts-Alito-Scalia-Thomas" for Supreme Court vacancies that clearly will occur for McCain should he unfortunately for the Nation wind up in the White House.

Moreover, and more importantly, the Iraqui war needs to continue and the U.S. needs to look around for more countries with governments that are not suitable (even if elected ones) for undermining, bombing, invading and occupying. The plutocrats love it, and McCain knows it. In fact, he recently suggested that he would introduce Obama to Karl Marx. Well, that's cute, but there is obviously no need to introduce McCain and his sponsors to Benito Mussolini, who described his Italian government as that of corporate fascism.

Why not. We have fast food drive through resturaunts like McDonald's, why not drive through fast bribes like McCain's.

Rollingdivision - Ethical lobbyists don't use bribes. Far and away lobbying is done in a completely legal and overboard manner. Lobbyists, just like anyone else, offering bribes should be prosecuted. If you have some sites confirming your claim "using bribes, which is what successful lobbyists do" please post. But the truth is lobbyists using bribery is rare._______________Ethical lobbyists, what a perfect oxymoron!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! You're so naive.

People McCrazy is a fascist pure and simple. He believes that corporations and the military should control the strings of government. We have to pound this in so voters know the truth.

I challenge one of you trolls to tell me what McCrazy's economic policy is besides his flip flops on Bush's tax cuts even to the rich?

How is McCrazy going to resolve the sub prime crisis?

How is McCrazy going to minimize the effects of the upcoming recession?

To their credit both Obama and Clinton have policies to stem the sub prime crisis and upcoming recession. Every time I put these challenges out their I get ZERO responses because McCrazy is more of the same with regards to the economy. In fact McCrazy will make our economy like the failed economy of the old Soviet Union with inflated military expenditures for his 100 years war in Iraq and more wars, my friends.

And some worried Obama would not stand up to and take on McCain. I said it before Obama having to run against not one but two Clinton's now it's two Clinton's and One McCain, seems to be holding his own pretty well. And it seems he's dealing with McCain a little differently than the Clinton's he not just playing defense.

One of the denials that John McCain made two days ago in regards to the NYT article:

McCain said on Friday that he had never, ever, ever met with Vicki Iseman and her clients. It didn't happen even one time, McCain said.

When John McCain said that, he lied.

John McCain's own words from a 2002 deposition contradict his latest claims. In that deposition, John McCain admitted that he met with Vicki Iseman and her client, Lowell Paxson, to talk about a letter that McCain sent to the FCC, about telecommunications matters, in order to achieve financial advantage for Paxson's company - Paxson Communications, now ION Media.

Lowell Paxson also says that he went to meet with John McCain, thanks to Vicki Iseman's influence. "I remember going there to meet with him," says Paxson. Paxson says he told McCain, "I would love for you to write a letter.". Paxson also admits that Iseman was probably at the meeting: "Was Vicki there? Probably. The woman was a professional. She was good. She could get us to meetings."

In his deposition, McCain admitted to being Paxson’s advocate with the FCC:

"I said I would be glad to write a letter asking them to act." In fact, Senator McCain was so eager to do the bidding of Paxson and Iseman that he wrote two letters to the FCC.

Those letters were not regarded as at all typical. In fact, the FCC rebuked John McCain, calling the letters "highly unusual".

The relationship went both ways. Lowell Paxson did favors for John McCain too. John McCain flew around the country on Paxson's private jet, doing political business to prepare for this presidential campaign. Paxson also made gave campaign donations to John McCain.

Lowell Paxson's company owns 60 television stations around the country (see if there’s one in a city near you), poised to influence congressional elections and the presidential election in every region of the USA. The company also owns 2 television stations in Washington, D.C., able to exert heavy pressure on "inside the beltway" political opinion.

Isn't it interesting that John McCain lied to the American people on Friday about the special favors that he did for this company in exerting pressure on the FCC to cave in to Paxson's demands?

So, Hume,

You compromised your beliefs?

Ouch.
------------

First of all, I don't have "beliefs". I try to deal in facts.

If you mean whether I compromised my principles, the answer is no.

All I did is choose a candidate, from those available, who comes closest to being consistent with those principles.

Nader is not one of those candidates. In fact, Nader means nothing more to me than a guy on a street corner holding a protest sign. More power to him, but that doesn't mean that i would vote for him for President.

squareyellowpaper, you seem overly agitated today. I have found you to be much more rational in the past.

What's up?

beliefs are points of view based on the best available facts.

try a dictionary once in a while and yes, most people mean faith (which often flies in the face of fact) when they say belief.

a fact has to be open to examination and the possibility of being wrong and often are proven wrong otherwise they would simply be trivial bits of dogma.

you see our problem here, we can't even agree on or create enough words to have a legitimate argument!

That is why I put "beliefs" in quotation marks. I thought most would understand why. I should have thought of "outliers" like you. My apologies.

But I do appreciate your advice to consult a dictionary once in a while. That is always a good idea.

What you call as "our problem", might just be yours. You might wish to re-examine what you said.:-)

Macain is your a typical talk out both sides of your mouth politician. This free ride the media gives him is one of the most outragous undereported stories of the election, this guy has a long long history with lobbyists from days as a congressman to his present senate days. But I do think Barack is walking a fine line here with this one when the general comes and the election is over the next president is going to have to sit down with everyone,no magis is going to happen and special interest groups are not going to go away jsut because Baracl is president. That said I do think he can win the argument with the right framed attack,in which he has not relied on lobbyist money or pac money to run his race,he has relied on the grass roots movement that has resonded to his message and ideals for change so the lobbyists will have a hard time getting everything they want or setting a agenda with a president that owes them no favors !!!!!!

I hope McCain takes his funny little tortured arms and his wax museum wife and goes to hell, if he could just bring along all his ignorant supporters it could be just one big Darwin Award celebration.
