WASHINGTON — A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

In a teleconference with reporters, retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser who accompanied the Illinois senator to Kenya two years ago, said the senator was there to learn how tribes were organizing themselves.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration said. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax e-mail that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumors about Islamic ties are circulating on the Internet.

Kucinich is my candidates, the Corporatist MSM didn't even let him debate. Ron Paul can't win, Neverland Nader can't win.

HRC is a tough street fighting politician. That's the world she grew up in. It's not serving her well, but please name a president who didn't use Negative campaigning.

Obama is my choice. He has the charm and oratorical skills the every president has had. Yet Obama also has the issues down.

If your mind is still open, listen to this video of Obama being interview by the SF newspaper board. Just issues.

IT'S OK! IT'S OK! DO NOT PANIC! I REPEAT, DO NOT PANIC! DOCKERS AND POLYESTER ARE CLEARLY VISIBLE UNDERNEATH!

I DON'T THINK HE'S ONE OF THOSE RADICAL KENYANS WHO ATTACKED US! Oh, wait...

Well, come to think of it, they are pretty radical. The Kenyan students here, the way they're so nice and polite and work so hard--what could be more radical?

What does it say about the candidates, both McCain's campaign and Clinton's - that the wisdom and experience they say they have, so strongly contrasts with the way they try to use Barack Obama's name as a negative?

If they are so globally sophisticated, wouldn't they consider using his name as some political weapon a demonstration of an incredibly naive view of the world, foreign policy and the way the US is perceived?

I liked Maggie William's reply to this story. In a simple memo, she explains why GOP, Independents, and even some media do not like Hillary and her brand of politics. She practically admitted their involvement in the photo release and tried to smoke and mirror her way out. How lame that was, however it does the country good in exposing the Clintons.

Even some hard core Democrats may be waking up and truly seeing the Clintons for what they are.....vicious frauds who have no business in running for the White House. Borrowing Clinton catch-phrase: fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Read Daily Howler and Drudge needs to answer the following and quit being part of the media problem

"The issue, of course, involves Drudge"s pronouncement about that photograph of Obama. Mooing contentedly, Drum observed that Drudge"s post was "ambiguous"who distributed the photo"who did it go to?" Indeed, Drum"s caveat put matters mildly; as any advanced fifth grader could see, Drudge didn"t say that "Clinton staffers" had sent the photo in question to him; he simply said that unnamed Clinton staffers had "circulated" the photo (where, he didn"t say), and he quoted an accompanying e-mail message"without saying who the e-mail had gone to. Do you mind if we draw two simple conclusions"conclusions so simple a child could reach them? First: In all likelihood, no Clinton staffer sent the photo to Drudge, or the brilliant fellow would have said that they had. Second: For all anyone knows, some Clinton staffer sent the photo to a friend in Obama"s campaign, and the photo and e-mail proceeded from there. Is that what happened? We have no idea. But then, no one but Drudge has the slightest idea what facts (if any) lay behind his report"which didn"t keep a pair of moo-cows from mooing the Drudge story forward."

I just read the BEST assessment of the true damage of this from Ellen Hamm:

However, I am now fearful for Obama as he becomes the frontrunner. Pictures like this, as mild as they are, inflame hate. What happens when hate is inflamed? Bullets fly. Whomever is doing this should be careful, because if Hillary's campaign is sending this they should be prosecuted for hate crimes. Not because they are hating, but they should know that America can be dangerous. Her experience as First Lady should inform her actions. There is no justification for her to inflame this underbelly of violence.

There is no evidence that this came from the campaign. so until evidence is shown, please stop saying things like "There is no justification for her to inflame this underbelly of violence." because she didn't do this. her campaign didn't do this.

Clinton screams over NAFTA mailers, yet she is glad to support this photo?

That says a lot about her.

NAFTA mailers are lies, that have been pointed out to the Obama campaign, yet they persist in sending them out.

First there is NO evidence that the Hillary Clinton campaign sent these out.

This picture is just a picture. and there are lots of pictures of Hillary in similarly "damaging" garb. The point is that people can wear whatever they want. And the media are making a be fuss about it.
