Slideshow: Oscar Looks We Love: Let\'s Hear It For The Mavericks

If you thought you were watching the red carpet for the 1984 Academy Awards, we wouldn't blame you. For some totally unforeseen and entirely inexplicable reason, one-shoulder dresses and curly, country singer ponytails (we're talking about YOU, Anne Hathaway) were everywhere. What the hell was going on? But we're not going to get all bitchy like Kimora Lee Simmons--talk about the pot calling the kettle black dress, by the way--so instead we choose to celebrate the looks we loved. It's a short list (the pickings were slim), but it's sweet.

marion cotillard looked stunning. and she looks "normal" (okay, not that i see chicks like that walking around my neighborhood, but i mean that she doesn't look like she ate only cucumbers for two months to prep for her look!)--i love that she's curvy, beautiful, and confident. and her dress is amazing! and i have to give props to diablo cody because not only is she the only one that could pull that look off, she looks pretty rad. the dress was kinda shocking at first, but not only does she pull it off, she's got beautiful skin, and make-up/hair that's perfect.

Trash bag fashion aside, black is murder on Tilda, but she sadly wears it all the time. Look what it does to her face.

But she'd look fantastic in textured beige, which would put some color in her face, light brown, turquois (the green variety) and antique gold.

I agree w most of your picks, but have to say sometimes what the majority think is bad is really just bad. I'm talking about Tilda Swinton, who looked like a carrot in a trash bag. It was just horrid, no matter what words you try to dress it up with, like 'avant garde'. Its like the emperor being naked and everyone saying his clothes are splendid. He was still sans clothes, no matter what people said. That said, I like her, and thought her acceptance speech one of the most interesting of the night. But I'm not going to follow her fashion sense anytime soon.

Bravo is right! Our actors, writers and producers and supposed to be the creative, expressive, independent souls. But they've been chilled into conformity by Joan-Melissa, fashion columnists and 'What were they thinking' photospreads.

So now we have a well-manicured parade of professionally-styled mediocrity. Let their spirits breathe...
