I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Chris Dodd Obama

UPDATE: Dodd describes his "not comfortable" discussion in which he informed Hillary about his decision:

At a Cleveland press conference with Obama, Dodd denied he was implying Sen. Hillary Clinton should drop out, but merely suggesting that both campaigns watch their tone over the next week leading up to the critical Ohio and Texas contests.

Dodd said he informed Clinton last night of his decision to endorse Obama, adding that it was "not a comfortable" discussion.

UPDATE: Dodd used his endorsement to pitch a new message for the Obama camp -- that it is time for Democrats to unite around a single candidate:

"It is now the hour to come together," he told reporters in Cleveland. "I believe the hour has come now for us to make that choice - to stand up and say we're going to get behind this candidacy."

"I don't want a campaign that is only divisive here, and there's a danger of it becoming that," he said. "Not because the candidates want that, but too often the advisors the consultants others are seeking for that divisiveness."

"After a prolonged silence through most of the primary season, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd is rejoining the presidential race on somebody else's team -- Sen. Barack Obama's."

The Connecticut senator, whose own presidential campaign failed to draw enough attention to propel him past the first contest in Iowa, is expected to announce his endorsement of Obama this morning, according to a Democratic official close to Dodd. He'll then campaign with Obama in Ohio.

Obama's campaign hopes that the March 4 primaries in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island will be the victory that clinches the Democratic nomination for him. When he faces Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in another debate tonight -- the last before these pending primaries -- he'll do it with Dodd in his corner.

It's unclear what Dodd's task will be with the campaign or whether he'll be hitting those last two New England states still awaiting primaries next week. But if Obama eventually gets the nomination, Connecticut's two senators will be in opposing campaigns. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman is one of Republican Sen. John McCain's staunchest allies.

The Washington Post's Shailagh Murray notes:

Like Sen Joseph Biden (D-Del.) and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Dodd has been heavily courted by both the Obama campaign and that of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), including numerous calls from former President Bill Clinton. But the veteran senator had been reluctant to weigh in until voters across the country, including from his home state of Connecticut (which Obama won on Super Tuesday) could weigh in.

Much more from AP:

Dodd's support, coupled with his liberal credentials, could provide a boost for Obama as major contests near in big states such as Ohio and Texas on March 4. Obama has won some key Democratic endorsements in recent weeks, including Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, a close friend of Dodd.

Obama and rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had been vying for Dodd's support since he exited the presidential race after a poor showing in the Iowa caucus last month. Dodd, who won his Senate seat in 1980 and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 1995-1996, has long-standing ties to the Clintons.

Dodd is a "superdelegate," one of nearly 800 Democratic officeholders and party officials who automatically attend the national convention and can vote for whomever they choose. They have become an important force in the close race between Clinton and Obama, and both candidates are lobbying hard for their support.

Dodd is a brave man. I suspect there are plenty of superdelegates who have failed to endorse in no small part because they're avoiding having that uncomfortable discussion with Hillary or Bill.

But Dodd has demonstrated that it can be done. Others will follow.

Congressional hopefuls ride the Obama wave

Democrats in some of the unlikeliest places are looking forward to running on a ticket with his name on the top line.

WHo cares who Chris Dodd endorses at this point? I am sure he was just waiting to see who was going to be the nominee, before he made a stand.

Lets talk scorched earth policy 101.
The Dems have turned their backs on Hillary, so I hope Hillary runs as an Independent in November.

I am sickened by the Obamatons horrible treatment of Hillary. The Republicans do not treat their own people like this. The nasty comments and hate towards Hillary is awful.

This fantasy about Obama bringing the country together is nonsense. Obama's cronies include Farrkhan and Jesse Jackson. These two are the biggest anti-semites, racists and troublemakers around.

Obama is going to bring us together by raising the taxes of a family making over $100 K to 50%! My wife and I work very hard including overtime at the plant to barely make that much and Obama is going to raise our taxes from 20% to 40% plus other taxes will bring us to 50%.

"Obama's cronies include Farrkhan and Jesse Jackson."

That just ruined your argument.

Can't argue with the notion; but Dodd has been out front on FISA and I'd kinda like to see him run for majority leader.

Majority leader, or Attorney General! Thank you, Senator Dodd, for being again a voice of wisdom (Reid lost me with the telecom immunity!) - I hope you can persuade more of your collegues, so we can avoid damage to the party by prolonging an unnecessary fight. et's restore the constitution (PS why is Sen. CLinton the only dem of all the past and current ones that is refusing to sign the pledge to restore the Constitution to it's pre-Bush state??) Where is the press, "pressing" her on this?

That's what I was thinking: he'd make a great veep. But seeing he is the lone senator willing to stand up to the Bushies, maybe he's too important for the Senate to lose.

Not so fast, BWonka. Haven't you heard that along with having his heart replaced with a hot transplant "borrowed" from a poor Nepalese peasant, it's rumored Darth Cheney also had one of those tiny quail hearts from his hunting trips implanted in his male member? He wanted to be sure to maintain the throbbing element of his favorite namesake.

The GOP will attempt to use Obama's middle name much like the "n" word. Thay'll question his patriotism and those too ignorant to check into the reasons will only mention that. By the way, he also doesn't wear a US flag on his lappel, or put his hand over his heart during the National Anthym.

The shelf life on your hatefully devisive politics over the last 30 years is finally expiring. After final seven years of a molding and rotting party. We can throw them away.

Nah. The RNC will just bring out pictures of the race baiters and anti-semites Obama associates with = his pastor, Jesse Jackson and Farrakhan. They will also bring up Rezko and Obama's other sleazy deals.

Yeah Obama will bring us together. The Obamatons will hand this election to McCain on a silver platter. Wake up and vote for Hillary before it is too late.

Dodd's stand against FISA was the single most courageous political act of 2007.

I was hoping he would make an endorsement sooner, but respect him waiting until now, when the race is pretty much already decided.

Here's hoping Dodd replaces the perfidious Harry Reid as Speaker this year.

Chris Dodd is a constitutional expert so his support of Obama is no surprise, since Obama was a constitutional lawyer. Dodd has fought this administration quite well.
On th other hand, Hillary has disdain for the constitution. This is evident from her actions:

It was "not a comfortable" discussion because she probably bullied and threatened him. That's what the Clintons do to people whenever they don't get their way. I'm afraid for Senator Dodd that he doesn't wind up like Webster Hubbell.

Thank you Senator Dodd.

You have any evidence of her "bullied and threatened" Senator Dodd?

Pretty serious charges without proof. I am getting tired of all the insuations without anything to substantiate them.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:41 PM on 02/26/2008

No... there's no proof necessary. Everyone who doesn't like Hillary knows exactly what she's feeling, why she does what she does, what the hidden meaning is, what the intended effect is and what the reasoning behind every word, action, feeling, expression and thought is. They are *all-knowing*. Anyone still insinuating assault, battery and involvement in a death behind the veil of a computer screen is seriously unstable. But no, you won't get any substantiating proof or evidence... just a lot of banter backing up the hatred they thrive upon...

Goodness - Obama has even converted the nonbelieving (http://www.the-scientist.com/blog/display/54362/) - notorious genetist, racist and double helix fan - James Watson also endorses Obama. Wonders never cease, and it just goes to show that Obama is indeed the man to unite the disparate.

Just read this article from a grass roots mom who researched both Clinton and Obama and who had an open mind and good research skills.

She's laid out their records very well.

I did pretty much the same thing when Obama and Bill Clinton came down to New Orleans. And while I can't post a diary because I have to work for a living, I decided on Hillary since she had plans regarding the sub-prime mortgage crisis, wetland restoration, and Biofuel subsidization. Obama talked about how our trolley were running, there was less trash in the streets, and how we need to do more for our country so the government can change. Bottom-up, instead of top-down, something.

I voted for the obvious choice.

Hillary, I guess you should've voted on the Telecom Immunity bill instead of skipping. You were in DC at the time so what was your excuse? And after skipping such an important, you're in no position to be criticizing Obama for his "Present" votes.

I gave $ and support to Dodd because of his pledge to fight the immunity that rewards those that broke the law, and I wrote the office of each Senator who is a Presidential Candidate promising I would not vote for anyone that did not fight immunity. Well both Obama and Clinton failed to vote for FISA, so the only answer can be that Dodd's endorsement carries unusual weight to others like myself.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:54 PM on 02/26/2008

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain took time from campaigning for the"Potomac Primaries" to vote on the amendments. Obama voted for the amendments to strip immunity from the bill, while McCain opposed the amendments and voted in favor of keeping immunity. Hillary, of course, did not vote.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:39 PM on 02/26/2008

Please check the record: Obama DID come and voted against the immunity. It must be the press again, giving sen. Obama such an easy time. (BTW - why is the press not "pressing" Sen Clinton on her financials, which she promises to release AFTEr she is nominated?! And on the list of library donors? And on the $11.3 MILLION for the library, related to a deal with a Kazakh autocrat on the State Dep list for his human rights violations?! All we hear is Rexko, never Paul, Hsu, Rich, Castel Grande, missing billing records, etc etc etc
