Leon Panetta Slams Chief Clinton Pollster Mark Penn, Compares Him To Karl Rove

The argument that the constant carping about Hillary Clinton's campaign has been a function of an Obama-friendly, process-obsessed media is well and good. But how, then, to explain the deeply held dissatisfaction of an old Clinton loyalist like Leon Panetta?

In an interview with The Observer, Mr. Panetta compared Mrs. Clinton's top strategist Mark Penn to Karl Rove, suggested that the Clinton campaign had totally underestimated Barack Obama's appeal, and complained about the overall lack of planning that he said had characterized the former First Lady's bid to return to the White House.

How will Clinton find a way to spin this one and fault 'the media' or Obama?

Maybe they'll write a letter to Panetta and get Hillary's campaign team to sign it.

Mark Penn and anyone else from Burston-Marsteller has no business in American Politics. They sucessfully represent criminal American Corporations . Their advocacy is generally aimed at opinion makers and newspapers, never the general public, let alone voters. Just google B/M and see their client list.

Yea, Huffingtoners! I can imagine tons of books coming out on the HC flameout. The Obama magic is the spark that ignited the fire.

And, of course, the biggest problem of all is Hillary herself. Snide, petulant, prepotent, petty, whiny, deceitful, insincere, passive-aggressive, egocentric, overly ambitious Hillary. We don't like her; we don't want her. Not because we dont want to elect a woman president. Not because the press "favors" Obama. Just because we are tired of the same old shit in Washington.

Hillary Achilles' heel is arrogance. She is arrogant enough to believe that the more than 10 million voters who have chosen Obama over Hillary in primary after primary are simply delusional or politically naive. I contend that arrogance is the last bastion of insecurity and I contend that Hillary has deep self-esteem issues and conflicts concerning her womanhood--to the extent that she harps upon the phrase "commander-in-chief" as a near validation of her greater macha self. This is too much like George Bush who has used the American military to prove his manhood at the expense of hundreds of thousands of lives.

Congressional hopefuls ride the Obama wave

Democrats in some of the unlikeliest places are looking forward to running on a ticket with his name on the top line.

This is a friend of the Clintons and despite that he is an honest person and giving us some idea of their profound misunderstanding of how voters feel in 2008. Hillary Clinton thought she could vote for the war in Iraq and work with Lieberman to promote war with Iran and still capture her party's nomination. This cold calculation has made her unable to rally enough support to defeat an excellent candidate like Obama.

The Clinton campaign is beyond sleazy.

Example. The nerve to put out the Obama picture in native garb and deny they did it (before then admitting it), and then to say that Obama objecting to the photo being used by Camp Hillary as it was is something Obama should be ashamed of. The Clinton machine is not comparable to Karl Rove - it is Karl Rove.

yes, there is something definitely amiss . . . they are fighting a rove style campaign . . . and it seems that they were unprepared to be challenged . . . they thought bill's legacy would get them all the votes they needed on Super Tuesday . .. they like the chimp had no back up plan . . .just arrogance

That's the key. You have to CHALLENGE the Rovian activities. That's why Kerry lost. Rove and his brand of fuckwits are all just bullies, you stand up to them and they wet themselves and run away in fear.

DO NOT BE AFRAID of them. Fear is their tool. IF you aren't afraid of them, they can't hurt you.

Former Congressman Leon Panetta is a profoundly honorable man. Those from Monterey, California who elected him to Congress hold him in high esteem. He's got to be troubled by what's going on and he sees it as many of us do, though he is kinder and more gracious than we have to be.

Hillary Clinton made the wrong choices from Day One with the old school way she hired people for her campaign. They threw money around like there was no tomorrow and didn't plan for a great competitor and a poorer than expected showing in the early primaries. Who wants to have their government run that way?

I mean to see a woman elected to the Presidency in my lifetime, but I can't see it being Hillary Clinton. She let us all down by mismanaging the most important job interview of her lifetime. In the end, she can't blame Wolfson or Penn, she hired them. The crows are coming home to roost in Chappaqua.

Clinton is floundering badly. She has already lost and we the public are just being subjected to the dying throes of a gasping corpse of a campaign.

It's all very well to blame the campaign managers and insiders, but the bottom line is that this is a failure of leadership.

Clinton started the race as a household name. She had raised more money than any candidate. She was way ahead in the polls. All the Corporations had already bet on her to be the nominee and the President, and had contributed to her campaign. She had Bill Clinton campaigning for her, and she had all the party machinery behind her. She was the anointed and inevitable candidate according to the MSM who touted her daily.

With all of those factors in her favor, she still managed to mess it up, fiscally, tactically and tonally. This was a monumental failure of leadership. She is not competent to be President of the United States of America.

BGandE,

You have covered most of it correctly IMO. And, Hillary's peevishness and attempts to be overbearing were astonishing during the 'debate.'

Visualize her in a group who disagree with her and imagine how she might negotiate -- she absolutely was able to raise her voice and talk OVER two moderators and her debate opponent. That's talent? That's an attempt to railroad serious discussion.

She is so self-absorbed and so utterly immune to others, and all the hogwash about "this mother" or "that child" who "tugs on her arm" won't carry the day for Hillary.

Let's look for the moment she finally realizes she is not the best candidate. It may not happen in our lifetime; maybe she'll bow out anyway.

McClain and Hillary campaigns come across as are mostly about "ME!", while Obama is largely about WE and US. Rove was all about are you "one of them" or are you "one of us;" the Gobbles dialectic.
