Most Americans are planning to spend their stimulus rebate checks to pay down existing debt or add to their savings, not to fuel the kind of consumer spending that would bolster the economy, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.

Only 18% of respondents to the national poll said they intend to spend the money they receive later this year from the federal government as part of an effort to inject cash into the sputtering economy. By contrast, 34% said they intend to save it and 31% intend to use it to pay off existing debts.

The article seems to make the assumption that people will actually do what they say they plan to do... I can't find stats on the correlation right now, but I doubt very much that everyone who says they'll put the money into savings or pay debt instead of spending will actually do so.

Right. Americans spend every nickel not nailed down and borrow it if it is nailed down but they're not going to spend their government handout.

Just what did the policy makers expect? $300.00 or $600.00 buys WHAT? Not a lot - so the smart money says pay your bills down and put the rest in savings (if there is anything left). C'mon November!

I've been predicting that the price of gasoline and/or energy will spike around the same time to take care of the rebate like it did last time. It WILL be a stimulus for the oil industry, no doubt. Oh, boy Exxon.

Now there is a shocker. NOT

We are planning on splitting our 'rebate' between some house repairs, and savings.
