SNL Writer Surprised By Clinton Remark, Ordered To Write More

NEW YORK — James Downey knew something odd had happened when he stepped away from watching the Democratic presidential debate on Tuesday night to check on something in the kitchen and his phones started ringing.

Hillary Clinton had cited the "Saturday Night Live" skit Downey had written to complain about her treatment by moderators Brian Williams and Tim Russert.

"In the last several debates I seem to get the first question all the time," she said. "I don't mind. I'll be happy to field it. I just find it curious if anybody saw `Saturday Night Live,' maybe we should ask Barack if he's comfortable and needs another pillow."

The skit about an Obama-Clinton debate featured a lovestruck press corps fawning over Barack Obama, while treating Clinton as an annoyance in their way. A fictional Campbell Brown fanned herself in excitement after an Obama answer, while a John King impersonator suggested he had "nailed it."

Downey stayed up for the midnight rerun of MSNBC's Tuesday debate just to see what she had said.

"That usually doesn't happen unless it resonates," said Downey, "so that's nice. It's good for the show."

Downey is an original "Saturday Night Live" writer who's also been head writer for David Letterman. He's been back at "SNL" since 2000, when he wrote skits about Bush-Gore debates; and he's been the lead writer at the comedy show on political material since then.

He said it's hard to recall a more dazzling political personality than Obama in his lifetime.

Still, Downey can't help but notice how many people in the news media have been seduced by the Illinois senator. The Clinton campaign has expressed frustration that it is getting a tougher ride from the press.

Clinton has been the first person questioned in six of the past 10 Democratic debates, and some argue this puts her at a disadvantage.

"It's like when the mom is in the grocery store and the kids rush up with this brand new cereal saying `We've got to get it, we've got to get it!'" Downey said. "The mom is the one who is supposed to read the box, check the ingredients. She's not supposed to go, `Oh, my gosh, this is great! It has marshmallows and chocolates and sprinkles."

While he loved getting his work noticed and understands what Clinton must be feeling, Downey said mentioning the skit might not have been her best move.

"It might, on balance, make her look a little whiny," he said. "She might have been better off if other people pointed it out for them."

MSNBC might have also been a source of some of Clinton's annoyance. Both Chris Matthews and David Shuster have apologized over the past months for remarks about the Clinton campaign, which briefly considered backing out of the network-sponsored debate. Tuesday's debate was seen by 7.8 million people, the largest audience in the network's history, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Already, "Saturday Night Live" executive producer Lorne Michaels has ordered Downey to write another skit on the campaign for this weekend's show.

"That's Lorne," Downey said. "He likes to paint you in a corner and if you do it, your reward is to get to jump out of a deeper corner. I pray to God it's my last debate."

It's a new day folks. Isn't Obama half caucasian? The bickering over all the lame nonsense this site puts out as news is such a reflection on what a thin skinned society we have. Especially rediculous when compared to real news and the future of this nation.

The entire skit looked like a minstrel show....problem is how to find some one tall, dark and handsome who can act. .to play Obama SNL used to be hip, fringy and off-beat; now it's gone mainstream, they've sold out....Tina Fey making tons of money with her American Express Ads.....cause she's got no talent.....she's smart, but she's anything but funny.

"It might, on balance, make her look a little whiny," (Downey) said. "She might have been better off if other people pointed it out for them."

Or it might have been better if she hadn't relied on a second rate comedy program as her voice of authority...

Insulting AND simplistic - nice.

Yes, it is an insulting and simplistic way to choose a candidate. Although it is not true of everyone, it is of far too many of Obama supporters. I used to believe the Democratic Party nominated candidates of strong substance versus emotional-appeal. Both Sen. McCaskill and Caroline Kennedy have both stated that they based the decision to endorse Obama largely on their children pushing them to do so.

If you want to nominate someone who doesn't have emotional appeal, that's your right; just don't expect them to win the general.

Skit aside, Tuesday's contests will seal the deal for most people.

SNL has made it fassionable to poke fun at our national leaders for decades, HRCs complaining won't stop it now or in the near future. The Hillary camp has to learn how to laugh - or cackle, if they must!

Where did you get the idea that Hillary was complaining to SNL? They were right on the money as far as I'm concerned! She was acknowledging the skit because it is true!

Hillary has mentioned the SNL skit where Obama is favored over her but , as usual, made no reference to the Tina Fey bit that some took as an endorsement of Hillary. I didn't believe it an endorsement for even Tina is not that fey, in fact, I would support Ms Fey for president AS we could do worse than bright, creative, and interesting. Hillary is beginning to act like a MPD or DID and if she is going to present many personalities could we see just one emerge that is exciting?

I'd like to see SNL do Hardball, but have them all dressed up in flamboyant pimp clothing and jewelry and "pimp cups" and all that while using that rapper terminology of theirs. And they'll be like, "There ain't no conspira-shizzle up in here. Dat Clinton bitch be paranoid, yo. Pimpin' be da word we use ta communa-kizzle."

I'd bet Biden, Dodd, Kuchinich, and Gravel would love to get the first question in a debate. How much media attention did those guys get? Good or bad, Hillary gets more media attention than anyone. The media pundits in the begining of this campaign season were ready for a Hillary coronation. She was consistently referred to as unbeatable, and they have bought into her slogans hook, line, and sinker. They reference the race as experience vs. Hope, as if she had proven her 35 years. Tell me how time spent at Walmart considered Presidential experience? How many times have you heard someone on CNN say that her strongest point is that she's Ready on Day One? What does that even mean?!?! And now she has the media scared of their own shadow. I mean, she clearly lost the last debate, but no one in the media is willing to step up and just say it. She's got everybody bending over backwards to be "fair" to her. Give me a break. If Obama had lost 10 in a row, hell, 5 in a row, he would have been media history. Hillary teared up in NH and it was practically played back on a loop back. The media is obsessed with Hillary Clinton. It's time for them to let go and move on.

aint that the truth. its amazing, only the clintons can convince a whole country to accept their decision on when this race is over. the media has not even talked once about what the republicans will launch at hillary once she is coronated. its actually sad if it works. can you imagine all of the people who have been inspired to believe that we will never have to hear from the clintons again? imagine if she steals it like she has planned. i love how the media wont say it either. it wont say that her plan is no longer about winning delegates. its about winning and regardless of the facts (she's down in popular vote, delegates and she's losing superdelegates daily) she cant "still win." what the fuck is she talking about? can someone please call her on it? please!!!!

If Obama had lost 11 straight and had gotten beaten by 60 points in some caucuses don't you think the media would be killing him with stories that he should get out? Of course they would. So why don't they hammer Hillary to get out especially since it looks like she won't come close to the 65-35 blowout victories she needs to make this a competitive race again? It's because of the media control she still enjoys. Has Obama been able to make a phone call and squash a story that he knew would not be a fluff piece? Bill Clinton did that on his wife's behalf last summer. He called GQ up and blackmailed them into killing a story critical of Hillary's campaign. Pieces of that article have surfaced and it portrays the Hillary campaign as the dysfunctional lot they have revealed themselves to be - albeit six months after the story was supposed to run. If Obama tried that strategy, say on a Rezko piece, do you think a media outlet worth its salt would say OK and kill the story? Hell no, they'd record the conversation and post that and Obama would be killed in the media. It would create a firestorm. Hillary is just desperate. She sees her political aspirations failing along with her failing campaign that's been crushed at every turn by a better run campaign from the upstart junior senator from Illinois. This is going to be the greatest upset in modern political history and i can't wait.

once Russert just threw a question out there for either to answer... and Hillary wanted to go first... It's her way, or no way. Whine, Cry and stomp your feet all you want... this isn't your year Hillary.

Eh. In the grand scheme of things SNL is irrelevant. Losers get desperate and their supporters get desperate. Hopefully, America will put them all decisively out of their misery soon enough.

I am afraid that in the scheme of things it did help to reinforce the Clinton claim and of course I do not think a show goes by that Abrams does not remind everyone of this supposed media bias of which he is of course not guilty. (I think I can make a pretty good argument that he is just as quilty to the degree that he claims the rest of the media is though of course in reverse.) It has gotten so ridiculous that I cannot watch any of them anymore because they are so afraid to present the facts anymore because reporting truthfully is now being biased. Now they must magnify an Obama perceived misstep and play down the Clinton campaign strategy which to put it in the only acceptable terms that can be used would be fibbing, bending the rules a bit, being a bit sensitive, good heartedly poking fun at the other candidate because as Hillary said one has to have a bit of fun sometimes during campaigns and all can share a good laugh. I know that after all of this good sportsmanship displayed by Senator Clinton I am disgusted that something potentially wonderful will be made sour. Hey I can say what is true, I am not the press and I am biased with a lot of information to support my bias.

I don't know that you can conclude anything more than that it resonated with Hillary.

Now THIS SNL skit featuring the candidates was stinking hilarious because it totally resonates. Considering 48% of america dislike Hillary. Deny it all you want but it is a fact. That is why this SNL skit was more truthful.

Oh, this was so funny.

I wasn't bothered by the Clinton debate sketch. It's a sketch on a comedy show. It's either funny or not funny, not biased or not biased.

It reminds me of when someone--Larry King?--asked Jon Stewart if he didn't have a responsibility to present all sides of the issue, etc., and he pointed out that he was a comedian, not a journalist, and that it was pretty darned sad that he was expected to do the media's job for them.

Here's a revolutionary POV...

The skit was funny. So was The Daily Show's recap of the debate last night (which was pro-Obama.) And neither is part of a vast media conspiracy to control the election. There's media bias on both sides, and no one is immune to its influence, which is why most people take the media with a huge grain of salt and draw their own conclusions as best they can.

Neither HRC supporters nor Obama supporters have a monopoly on intelligence, or sincerity, or love of country, and none of us has a crystal ball.... We simply looked at the same information and came away with different opinions. Ain't freedom grand?

Would it be SO BAD to take a step back and be glad that people are engaged in this election in record numbers, both candidates have already made history, and by their own admission, they're more similar than they are different. Someone will win, and someone will lose, fair and square, it doesn't mean evil has triumphed over good either way. It's just the way the process works.

If your choice loses, you can choose to support the winner, or not. You can choose to hold a grudge and stay angry for years and hurl invectives at people who supported the winner, or you can choose to have a little perspective and get over yourself.

We're talking about Saturday Night Live here, people! Good lord!

Hi!
I thought the skit was hilarious and was actually grateful for it.
While liking Obama enormously and initially supporting him the unfair media coverage was becoming so blatantly biased both on MSNBC/MSM and on Progressive Blogs (of course) that I just found it intolerable.

The Obamatons who are so vehemently protesting and angry or bitterly panning SNL and the skit will be laughing their asses off and agreeing when the tables are turned, and of course they will be.

I do hope, I beg you to insert something with Matthews and the thrill running up his leg and/or how he badgers his "guests" panelists into agreeing with him even if half heartedly or on a very small technicality.
I love Darryl Hammond and would love to see it at some point.

Thanks for a great skit and the show was good. I've been watching SNL from the beginning and there have been some years that I didn't find it funny at all, the jokes were too scatological and sophomoric for my taste... but hey, you can't please everybody. Last night was a much needed refreshing respite from the insanity and inanity of this election.

Thanks Tina Fey for many of us as well.
Whe rocked!

I am an Obamaton, and I thought the skit was very funny. See how wrong you can go, when you characterize people instead of asking and listening? That's Hillary Clinton for you. She's got an answer BEFORE anyone asks the question, because she thinks she knows what people think. If she asked, and listened, she would understand what this moment is all about for millions of Americans, and she would have dropped out of the race by now. The skit, by the way, made good fun of Clinton and her Hermione personality, but it's obvious she didn't realize that.

Just some food for thought, Obamaton: How would you want to be treated if you were running for office, applying for a job, auditioning for a part, or seeking your own particular goals? Would you be just as happy if one of your rivals or opponents were given special treatment? Would you be willing to give up a job because the other person was just more likeable, or the right color, or the right gender? Would you expect to have every aspect of your being scrutinized by others who would just as soon have you fail? I doubt there is any one of these bloggers who would withstand the onslaught of negative attacks that Hillary has suffered. Her clothing, her haircut, her marriage, her daughter, her voice, her laughter have been the centerpiece for the media and the comedians. So, they hit their mark. She may not win this nomination, but it is not because she does not deserve it. It is because some of the citizens of the great country are willing to destroy one person in order to have another. Shame on all.
