Silicon Alley Insider:

MySpace and producer Marshall Herskovitz say that "Quarterlife", the TV-like Web show, is a hit. But when the show jumped to an actual TV network last night, it flopped. NBC drew 3.9 million viewers for the show's national TV debut Tuesday night -- 43% and 48% less than CBS and ABC, respectively, drew during the same 10 pm slot (Fox doesn't broadcast nationally during that hour).

What a shame. But I'm not surprised.

I didn't see one single promotion for this show on NBC. Not one. Then there it was.

By pure chance, I happened upon the show last night. I'm not one that seeks out rapid-fire, glib, 20-something dialog, but this show's script went beyond that into deeper examinations of the emotional turmoils faced by these characters.

I actually enjoyed it, and I hope NBC hangs-on for a few ore epis before canning it.

It did not flop.

The hair was floppy, yes. Much of it needs to be cut. The self-absorption level was pretty high. Some of that needs to be cut as well.

How can a show flop on one primetime outing? The media, or in this case, Michael Learmonth, needs to take a breath. Everybody breathe. Nothing's a hit from the start. Web viewing doesn't equal network viewing.

Hey, Marshall, give it a little rewrite. I think it has possibilities.

Three million viewers ain't wrong.

What a surprise-- it's a matter of scale. If 3 m illion people view a YouTube video, it's a pop culture phenomenon.

If 1 million people buy the same book, it's a megahit.

If 1 million people tune in to a TV show, it's a colossal flop.

TV got really competitive a while back, probably due to the rise of reality shows. During the '90s your show was cancelled if it didn't whomp "ER" in the ratings in the first six weeks. Fox is supremely guilty of it, and I've got a list of wrongly-cancelled TV shows at Amazon entitled "Creative, intelligent, clever...naturally they had to die."
