Clinton Raises $35 Million In February

WASHINGTON — In a remarkable financial recovery, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton raised $35 million in February even as Democratic rival Barack Obama was outspending her in key March 4 battlegrounds.

His financial superiority has been evident in the primary states of Texas and Ohio, which vote Tuesday and where he has purchased $7.5 million in advertising to her $4.6 million, targeting early voters, young voters and voters in regions with concentrations of delegates.

Clinton's fundraising more than doubled her January fundraising, when she collected $14 million to Obama's $36 million. Clinton has lost 11 straight contests since Super Tuesday on Feb. 5 and her ability to raise money was all the more notable coming in the midst of defeat.

"It was incredibly gratifying to see people come forth with this vote of confidence in me," Clinton told reporters in Hanging Rock, Ohio. "Obviously this is a tremendous benefit to my campaign."

But Obama has been raising money at an even greater rate and spending it, too. Some estimates place his February fundraising at more than $50 million _ which would be about half of what he raised in all of 2007. Obama spokesman Bill Burton would not divulge a total but said: "We've raised considerably more than" Clinton.

Obama's campaign had spent $2.4 million on ads in Ohio as of Tuesday, to her $1.3 million, according to TNS Media Intelligence/Campaign Media Analysis Group, which tracks political ads. Clinton spent $3.3 million in Texas; Obama spent $5.1 million, the firm's figures show.

Clinton began running a new ad in Ohio Thursday, with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland promoting her as a "fighter." "I think she's a person who has devoted her life to caring about other people, making sure that America works for everyone, not just the privileged few," Strickland says in the ad.

Obama is targeting younger audiences in his ads, buying expensive prime time spots on programs such as "American Idol" and evening sitcoms. On Tuesday, for instance, Obama bought 38 spots on "American Idol" broadcasts in Ohio and Texas, and in the two other March 4 primary states _ Rhode Island and Vermont. Clinton bought only six spots on the show in relatively small markets.

"She's where most of the traditional political buying is," said Evan Tracey, an ad analyst and president of TNS Media. "He is in the choice real estate _ it's the luxury end of political buying."

Obama also bought ad time on such Tuesday night programs as "Big Brother," "The Biggest Loser," and "Jericho," a CBS series with a devoted fan base.

Obama also was getting help from labor unions, even though in the past he has criticized rivals who received help from outside groups.

The Service Employees International Union began spending $1.4 million on ads supporting Obama in Ohio and Texas. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union was spending nearly $200,000 on ads in Ohio. What's more, the SEIU was spending a total of about $1.4 million supporting Obama through phone banks and door-to-door canvassing in Texas and Ohio.

"We are facing a real wall of money from the Barack Obama campaign," senior Clinton adviser Harold Ickes acknowledged during a call with fundraisers Thursday. "But based on everything we know today, we are confident we have very strong operations there."

Former President Clinton, campaigning for his wife at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., said: "If she can win a big victory here in Rhode Island, win in Ohio, win in Texas, she'll be on her way to the White House."

He also said: "We've had a great life. She's going to be fine regardless."

Clinton entered February with $9 million cash on hand for the primaries and about $7.5 million in debts. Obama had $18 million for the primary and $1.1 million in debts.

If both candidates raise more than $35 million each this time, that would make February an astounding fundraising month for the Democrats. At that rate, both candidates would break records for contestants in a primary fight.

Obama told reporters on his campaign plane, "I have no idea how much money we've raised, but we've been paying our bills. Right now, I believe we're doing very good."

In their call to fundraisers, Clinton's advisers announced that the campaign had raised the money from 300,000 donors, including 200,000 new contributors, most of them donating through the Internet. Aides said almost all the money was for the primary election.

"We have resources to play in big states coming up: Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont and states beyond," campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe said.

Clinton said reports of her relatively weak fundraising in January and her decision to lend the campaign $5 million started a wave.

"People want this campaign to go on," she said. "It just set off a chain reaction around the country. People start paying attention at different points in a campaign. Now people are engaged."

But some Democrats wondered whether the additional money was too late and not enough to match Obama.

"The Clinton campaign clearly has much more money than they had before, but they are still being dramatically outspent by Obama," said Simon Rosenberg, head of the New Democratic Network, a think tank. "And things don't seem to be trending their way and they don't have a lot of tools to deal with it anymore."

RIght. Stop being jealous. After all, your candidate has raised so much more. What do you care how much Hillary has raised. You obviously aren't supporting her campaign. So what is your problem then?

After reading these posts, one can clearly see that most of them are riding the Obamamania wave of hysteria. That doesn't bother me; however, what does is the sheer hatred of Hillary !!
I am totally convinced that this country will NEVER come together.
This isn't the Republicans doing this. The Democrats are destroying each other.
I fear we will all be very sorry when the old man, Senator McNutty is elected as our next president.
SAD thought, isn't it??

grammy --

What's sad is people like you who continue to enable narcissists like the Clintons in their pursuit of the Wh just because the media has been cheerleading them along for the last 8 years.

If anyone "hates" the Clintons it's because we don't care for the way they've abused and misused the Democratic Party for their own selfish whims.

You don't mind someone manipulating your emotions with fake tears, hired hecklers at campaign events, lies, distortions, race-baiting, gender-splitting, and badly over-acted photo-ops.

I do.

I think you just described Obama not Hillary. The hecklers, lies, distortions, race-baiting, over-acted fluffy speeches, photo-ops, and I'll add unreal media bias.... all describe Obama. As for selfish whims.... well my dear, your guy has the monopoly on that and if you'll take the time to look at his record, start with the raise he arranged for his wife at the non profit hospital she works at part time for over $300,000.00 a year. The same hospital that charged the uninsured, sick and the poor three times the going rate... and then go from there, there's plenty more.. The most recent is his blatant lie to the public about NAFTA... it was all over Canada's national news and has been verified . Just goes to show how untrustworthy his words are.

Go Hillary

Fisrt thing Obama did after getting to the Senate was getting Tony Rezko to help him buy a new house, the next thing was to vote for the 2005 DICK CHENEY ENERGY BILL because the nice employees of the Exelon Corp. raised $269,100 for him. The 2005 bill was a gift to the oil, gas and especially the Nuclear industry

Mr. Obama, David Plouffe Has Not Answered My Email

As you know, a little more than a week or so ago your campaign manager David Plouffe from the high-priced, high-powered political consultancy firm of AKP Message and Media broadcast an email request to provide him with personal stories about the recipient's involvement in your run for the Democratic nomination. These testimonials on your behalf were to be forwarded to the super delegates in your effort to court them should they become the deciding factor in the nominating process. I sent him the following reply but have never received so much as a thank you.

* * *
Dear Mr. David Plouffe,

You asked for a story. Here is mine.

I became actively involved in politics by way of political action rather than electoral politics as a freshman at a well-known universities in the South during the mid to late '60s, even before I had an opportunity to vote in a national election.

My first political lesson involved joining a student crew to paint the houses of poor whites and blacks in town, where I learned of the mad paradox of racism that kept both groups imprisoned on the wrong side of the tracks not 5 miles from our ivy-covered halls and flagstone walkways.

The first picture I put up in my dorm room, torn from the pages of Life magazine, was of a wounded American soldier on a litter being evacuated from a lush green rice paddy in a Southeast Asian country called Vietnam. Later, at the Pentagon, a National Guardsman, not 20 feet away, pointed his tear gas grenade launcher directly at me from behind a square of his bayoneted comrades because I and others of my generation did not want him and the others to die 8,000 miles away from home for no damn good reason. At one time, Senator Kerry agreed us.

Later still, my fellow students were tear-gassed by the town police in the main quadrangle because, after the assassination of Dr. King, we had decided that enough was enough and that the campus support workers, mainly Afro-American, needed a better, fairer deal than they were getting.

This was part of my coming of age during the battles of the '60s and '70s, which your candidate told the editors of the Reno Gazette-Journal he is not "invested in," as if that were a badge of honor. Vietnam was the war that my generation fought and died in or struggling to end, the war that your candidate said was not his "frame of reference," as if that too were a commendation for his candidacy. They are not.

Such statements suggest either a sad, willful ignorance or a callow political calculation on the part of your ambitious upstart who comes before the American people with the least national or executive elected service of any president since at least Woodrow Wilson and who otherwise has no significant record of leadership on any national issue of the last decade. Whichever the explanation for his statements, his self-confessed disinvestments from those progressive struggles of the late 20th century should disqualify him from consideration as an agent of change in the 21st.

Don't take this so personally. Hillary has, also, failed to correspond to voters emails and letters.

I, too, was very involved with the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.

Senator Obama has acknowledged the many good things our generation did but he is

coming from the perspective of a younger generation. I agree with him. We never finished

what we started. Ask our veterans. And we have a whole new set of problems from BushCo.

After the major movement for Civil Rights "ended" and the Vietnam War concluded, where

did all of the young protesters go? Did they believe Nixon's departure from DC would

change everything? Well, of course, it didn't.

They took on marriage, family and other responsibilities. They, shouldn't have but did

lose their youthful ideals and goals. They didn't continue with their involvement. Many

voted for Bush, twice!

Senator Obama should not replay the past however I believe he and American youth can

learn from it.

And he has.

The more and more I think about it the more and more absurd it is for the media to give Hillary's campaign all the attention it gets. She has no chance to win the nomination without using some dirty tricks. My argument follows.

1. Obama has won 11 contests and 10 states in a row.

2. Obama has won the last 11 contests by an average of 33 points a far greater margin than McCain has beaten Huckabee since Romney has dropped out of the race.

3. The closest primary after Super Tuesday was in Wisconsin where Obama won by 17 points while Clinton won her home state of New York by 17 points.

4. Hillary needs over 60% in the remaining primary and caucus votes to pass Obama in the number of pledge delegates.

5. Obama has a slight lead in Texas and is behind by less than double digit points in Ohio.

6. Because of Texas' combined primary/caucus system Obama will get the most delegates.

7. Her continued attacks only hurt the Democratic Party and help the news media.

8. The media continues to tell us that you cannot count Hillary out even though the numbers are not there to win the nomination.

9. Republicans know that Obama is the presumptive nominee even though the media has not giving Obama that crown so that he can get attacked on two fronts.

10. Obama will win VT, NC, MS, MT, OR and SD by big margins even if Hillary squeaks out in TX, OH and even PA.

11. Obama has now taken over the national polls among Democrats.

12. Obama and Clinton have to waste Democratic Party donations on a false premise that Hillary still has a chance to win.

13. Obama continues to do better than Clinton in the polls versus McCain.

14. The Republicans can save their donations for the general election.

15. McCrazy is getting a free ride from the media as long as Hillary holds off the inevitable.

16. The momentum argument is moot because even if she wins TX and OH then she would have to win the rest of the states by 65% or more.

Most of the states where Obama has won WILL NOT BE BLUE in November, Alaska, Alabama, South Carolina,Utah, Idaho, etc are all RED in November. Hillary wins the traditional Democratic states that are needed to win in November, N. Y., N.J. CA, MA, MI, if she wins Ohio and Penn She will get the nomination, Texas really doesn't matter, it will be RED in November , it always is.

It's ironic that only AFTER Clinton loses or is predicted to lose in a state's primary or caucus election, both her campaign and those who support her campaign conclude that the state really doesn't matter. Every state, RED or BLUE, matters in this election, not only because every voter matters but because every delegate matters, which is something that Senator Clinton herself realizes in spite of the spin that she and her campaign try to put on this. Also, both she and Senator Obama are running to be the President of the United States; not the President of the BLUE states. Nationally, there are more Democrats than Republicans, and both RED and BLUE states are now becoming PURPLE; and Senator Obama leads Senator Clinton nationally as well. First it was Super Tuesday, February 5th, when Senator Clinton would "wrap this up." When that didn't work out, Super Tuesday really didn't matter. Then, it was on to Texas to wrap it up. Now that it doesn't seem to be working out there, Texas doesn't matter! It's beginning to sound a little like Bush's "Mission Accomplished" mantra.

Isn't it strange that when Hillary is against the ropes heading into a 'must win' that the negative issues against Obama start falling like rain? I do not remember so many negative barbs in his direction at one time. Wow.

This is no coincidence. And it is strange that her very attacks are being puppetted by the Republicans. They know their best chance to win the Presidency is running against her rather than Obama.

Well the MSM has no desire to mention the TONY REZKO TRIAL that starts on Monday, but hannity is talking about Obama's friendship with the two WEATHERMEN TERRORISTS from Chicago, Willian Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, who bombed Gov't buildings like the PENTAGON in the 70's. And the endorsment Obama received from Louis Farrakhan has been getting lots of conversation. People are asking themselves why Obama would be a member of a Church that would Honor Louis Farrakhan as a GREAT MAN?

Sean Hannity is as extreme and raucous in his rhetoric as Rush Limbaugh and Cunningham, and he is speaking to an extreme faction of Americans, primarily conservative Republicans. Most other Americans know better than to listen to Sean Hannity as their objective source for news. Apparently, in spite of his rantings, the Tony Rezko association with Senator Obama and other similar unsubstantiated reports have not stuck. Most African Americans both "denounce and reject" Minister Farrakhan's remarks against Jews, just as Senator Obama has done. But in the African American community, Louis Farrakhan is not the "boogey man." He has contributed greatly to the African American community in an effort to honor their past and to uplift them in their present struggles, efforts that largely go unseen by the MSM and the general public; and it is for these efforts that Pastor Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ has recognized Minister Louis Farrakhan as a great man. Finally, Minister Farrakhan did not officially "endorse" Senator Obama. He said some kind things about him, as have many other Americans, both known and unknown. Senator Obama did not solicit these kind remarks, and he does not control the comments expressed about him by anyone.

What is found disturbing, how inside Camp Hillary, insiders acknowledged they had "studied" ROve, for he is considered "brillant" and "able" to win and knows how to play plitical games...They are throwing the kitchen sink at Obama these days, NOT a problem for Hillary and Bill who honed that skill as their winability/come back strategy since their Ark. days when Dick Morris "advised and tutuored them...they learned their lessons well. ANYTHING TO WIN, no matter if ALL others lose bigtime, no matter how damaging to the "real" greater comomon good", it is NOT about US, the people, it is about "them", and their ego centric legacy quest !!!
