Media Expert Decries Campaign Coverage

DALLAS — The founder of a prestigious institute on media and politics added his voice Saturday to the chorus of complaint over perceived press bias in favor of Democrat Barack Obama.

Walter Shorenstein, a prominent San Francisco-based real estate developer, Democratic fundraiser and longtime supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton, penned a memo to Democratic party "superdelegates" and other activists criticizing media coverage of the presidential campaign.

Shorenstein is the founder of the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University. His memo came days before Tuesday's key primaries in Ohio and Texas, which Clinton must win to save her waning candidacy.

The former first lady and her advisers have lashed out at the press in recent days, suggesting unfair coverage of the campaign has in part led to Obama's victories in the last 11 voting contests. They've encouraged supporters and voters to watch a "Saturday Night Live" skit that aired last weekend, depicting a group of journalists fawning over Obama.

Clinton appeared on this week's "SNL" to praise a similar sketch that parodied the media's treatment of her and her rival.

In his memo, Shorenstein concurred with the Clinton campaign's assessment.

"I am absolutely outraged with the media coverage of the presidential campaign," Shorenstein wrote in the memo, which was obtained by The Associated Press. "This is the most important election in my long lifetime, and to quote one of my favorite movies, 'I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!'"

He was quoting the 1976 movie "Network," in which a mentally disturbed television news anchor played by Peter Finch went on the air and implored viewers to rebel against gimmicks staged by network news executives.

"There is too much on the line for the media to ignore important issues while they obsess about Hillary's hairdo or Barack's baritone," Shorenstein continued. "Is it in the country's best interest that voters received far more information about Hillary's laugh than Obama's legislative record? Is it good for our nation that more attention is paid to the differences in their speaking style than their health care plans?"

Shorenstein attached several studies to the memo indicating the press had given more favorable coverage to Obama than to Clinton, and urged activists to forward the material to friends and voters and to complain to reporters.

"Our democracy depends upon the fourth estate to fulfill the uniquely critical role of informing voters about the important issues facing our nation," Shorenstein wrote. "Yet far too often, the campaign coverage has been biased, blase, or baseless."

This expert opinion is coming from a "longtime supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton." That fact alone should put this whole "expert opinion" in question. She cites a media obsession with "Hillary's hairdo or Barack's baritone." I'm not sure where she is getting her news from, but I haven't seen a single story about either. Maybe she is reading People or Us magazine? There has been a long-time relationship between the Clintons and Shorensteins, so this appears to be another "attack" by on of her surrogates and is far from an unbiased expert report.

Hillary Clinton is a political opportunist. Her entire career has been built on the back of her more politically talented husband. Most voters see this clearly. Clinton has repeatedly lied to the press, and to the voters. When you are caught out in a lie, when you use despicable tactics, such as releasing photos to the right wing muck racker Drudge, don't expect it to not backfire in your face. The mood swings and multiple personality changes have revealed her to be calculating and manipulative. She sets a bad example for women everywhere. I believe that Americans would be more than happy to vote for a woman, just not Hillary Clinton. When you start with such high negatives and run a shoddy and divisive campaign, you can't expect the press to ignore your blunders, and continue to support you as you lose ground. Clinton started off with every advantage in this primary process, and it's Clinton that has dictated the terms, and is entirely responsible for all her bad press.

The country gave Hillary and Bill the benefit of the doubt throughout the Clinton Presidency. But Hillary has moved so far to the right since she won her Senate seat, it's hard to pretend the political opportunism and lies aren't staring us in the face. What does it tell you about a person who would vote against every principal they claim to espouse, and sacrifice the lives of human beings, in order to be perceived as "tough"? She threw away any claim to being an advocate for women and children, with her two votes for war, and her vote for cluster bombs. It's sickening that anyone would put their own personal and political ambitions above the life of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians. Many Democrats have a fondness and affection for the Clintons. Those that are still behind HRC are just in denial about her true nature, and her naked ambition.

Excellent post! Very well said!

One things the Clintons have learned from Karl Rove, if you repeat a lie enough times it starts to become accepted as "truth" by the masses.

Obviously the media has been unfair to Hillary. Look at huffington Post headlines each day and you will see. As a progressive liberal I feel that my ideals are being sacrificed to some misguided sense of political correctness. I feel Hillary can beat McCain because she is strong in the swing states like Ohio and Florida which decide elections through the electoral college. I am very saddened that progressive media in order to sell Obama has neglected to comment on andeducate their readers on how the system works. No where is this more important than for first time voters who make up a large part of Obama supporters. Oh heck I guess we get what we deserve-- no wait Idid nothing to deserve those republicans we have had. Maybe the media should explain how Obama could win ih the awing states. I for one know he could not lose in California or NewYork but what about Texas where no democrat can win. And what about his chances in swing states like Ohio and Florida- Obviously Hillary is more popular in both of these crucial states. Maybe if the policies are so similar we should ignore koolth and go for electoral votes. We could end up nominating a candidate that is the favorite of the democrats but not a favorite of the electoral college. Hillary was not my first choice but I have to support her because my almost sixty years have taught me how elections turn out and why . Republicans want Obama as an opponent.

I'm finding it hard to watch this edition of American Political Idol.
I've not heard anyone discussing the media shut-out John Edwards experienced. Too bad he didn't have a supporter like Shorenstein. And how about Joe Biden? He was never deemed a serious contender by the press. And what about Dennis Kucihich.....nahhhh forget that one!
We've been dealing with press interference in elections for a long time. Did anyone else scratch their heads in disbelief as broadcast media successfully ran Howard Dean off the rails because he yelled "Yeeee Hawww" a little too loudly? Forget about the guy's brilliance and creative ideas. He just didn't have that certain "star" quality so necessary for good leadership.

When I was in the first grade there was this kid who always would create trouble. He'd pick on other kids, lie a lot, give the teacher a lot of grief over everything.

His desk was eventually moved into the corner. He became an issue in the Principle's office for his bad behavior. The teacher usually assumed he was lying because that was his nature. When he'd get into fights with other kids, the teacher would start to assume he was the cause, because he always had been as long as he'd been at the school.

This is why the media "picks on" Hillary Clinton. Once you lose your credibility from lying all the time, distorting your competitor's record, and from the triangulating that you've made part of your personality, then people begin to question you even when you are telling the truth. They start to treat you accordingly. She has played really nasty politics. She pulled the "sexism card" when she lost her first debate. Her husband pulled the "race card" in South Carolina. Her campaign sent around letters and emails to voters in New Hampshire stating that Obama was Pro-Life. Her campaign has sent pictures of Obama dressed up in Muslem attire.

Meanwhile Obama pretty much gives her bad behavior the benefit of the doubt during the debates, during his speeches, etc.. He was fought a very honest and "above water" campaign.

Is there any wonder why Hillary gets treated a bit differently? When the media asks her questions on serious matters she triangulates, lies (like she did regarding her previous support of NAFTA in the last debate), etc.. They have to constantly make sure she doesn't pull a fast spinjob on them, or their viewers will wonder why they once again let her get away with it.

How true! Thanks for stating this so well - I couldn't agree more. Is this her latest excuse for the last 11 votes?

I actually think that, in may ways, Hillary has been received far better treatment from the press than she has deserved....

If Obama had lost the past 11 primaries/caucuses in a row do you honestly think the media would still be giving him equal coverage and treating his campaign as if it was viable???

Her comments at the end of the most recent debate about the honor and glory of being the first woman as a serious presidential candidate..... If Obama made the very same claim, word for word, about being the first black candidate don't you think the media would have portrayed him as the angry black man???

How come she wasn't complaining earlier when the media was reporting her as the the heiress presumptive???

Can you imagine how she would behave (or how loudly she would shriek 'foul') if....... There were claims about her lack of patriotism? Her religion was given as something it was not? Her campaign was falsely accused of contacting the embassy of a foreign government to deny what she'd been saying in her campaign speeches? (Surely everyone can see just how ridiculous that one is!!) She would rant, rage, accuse and lie. Obama, on the other hand, has taken malicious and personal attacks with grace, aplomb, professionalism and candor, managing to rise above it all.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:22 AM on 03/03/2008

Total crap, the media favored her for more than a year when she was the presumptive favorite.

It's the nature of media coverage to favor the front-runner. It's EXACTLY what they were doing for Hillary ALL last fall. Compare HER coverage last year to Kucinich or Gravel, marginalized early by THEIR lack of coverage.

The complaint of media bias comes from EVERY trailing candidate.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:50 AM on 03/03/2008

WoW I must have missed that...Hillary was the media favorite? She was the FRONTRUNNER, bus she has never ever received darling coverage.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:03 AM on 03/03/2008

She certainly did. Back then Chris Matthews would never even mention the names of John Edwards or Barrack Obama. It was all "Hillary versus Rudy" and he and his guests would sit around talking about what Hillary needed to do (in positioning herself) to beat Rudy in 2008.

I'd turn the channel to the other networks and see basically the same topics. No mention of the other Democratic candidates. No one even knew who Obama was.

I was convinced that the media was deciding the primary in favor of Hillary. How can you beat a frontrunner if the news won't even cover you or mention your name? Most voters assume the "other guys" don't have a chance and stay home from voting.

Then Hillary lost her first debate before Iowa and she screamed "sexism" and everything turned for her on a dime.

Well the media are proving their bias this morning by not covering the newly discovered memo by AP that Obama was lying last week when he said no meeting with the Canadian government happened regarding his rhetoric on NAFTA. Read it here: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jrFPkleRZmbmPtPxHBGNAPSzfUtwD8V5OLP00 and of course there's no mention of this on HuffingtonPost. At least that I can find.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:31 AM on 03/03/2008

They're trying to downplay and deny the NAFTA lie all over the place. Last night CNN went nuts trying to downplay it and spin it, citing 'sources said' Clinton also called Canada etc... and then CNN stressed the Clinton part over and over again, KNOWING that the 'UNKOWN source was a MYTH to take attention away from Obama. CNN is DISGUSTING as is MSNBC in their deliberate LIES and pro Obama spin. The American people should be totally outraged with them

Are you paying attention? At the end of the video there is a screen shot of an article TODAY wherein a MEMO was found of the meeting that "did not happen," and a vindication of the CTV story. The Canadian Embassy is simply trying hard not to influence the election, but Obama is digging his own grave.

Obama once again proves why he will NEVER get my vote, in the primary OR the general election. "New politics indeed!"

They may have viewed her as the presumptive favorite, but she was never favored by the media. Read Bob Somersby, The Daily Howler. Educate yourself, people. Her fame is a double-edged sword, but don't ever, ever say that the media favored her.

HUFFPO HEADLINE:
Florida's GOP Governor: I'd Support a New Democratic Primary
==============================================

IF YOU GO BACK AND LISTEN TO BLITZER'S INTERVIEW, CRIST NEVER SAYS "I'LL SUPPORT A NEW DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY". BLITZER PUSHES HARD ON THIS AND GETS EVERY ANSWER CRIST CAN THINK OF EXCEPT A DIRECT ONE.

I WAS ASTONISHED WHEN BLITZER NEXT INTERVIEWED DEAN AND TOLD HIM THAT CRIST HAD SAID THIS !!!!!!!!!!

THIS IS BLITZER'S "INTERPRETATION/SPIN" ON WHAT CRIST ACTUALLY SAID IN ORDER TO BRAND CRIST AS "WILLING" WHEN, IN FACT, ANYBODY WITH A BRAIN KNOWS IT AIN'T EVER GONNA HAPPEN. THE REPUBLICANS WANT HILLARY SO BAD THEY CAN TASTE IT.

I AM SICK TO DEATH OF CNN, AND ESPECIALLY BLITZER, PULLING THIS SHIT AND TRYING TO STEER THE ENTIRE ELECTION IN THE DIRECTION THEY WANT IT TO GO IN.

"CNN = POLITICS" IS THEIR HEADLINE BANNER

CNN(REPUBLICANS) = (CORRUPT/BIASED)POLITICS (= MONEY) IS THE TRUTH

bottom line....

the rightwing republican-controlled MSM is following their master's instructions

the rove/cheney/pnac crowd KNOW that they are toast if obama is the democratic nominee

they also know that they have an even or better shot at beating hillary clinton into the pavement

the corrupt DNC wing of the republican party (especially hillary) is in complete cahoots with the greedy neos and badly needs for hillary to get the nomination - this is a "win/win" for them whether clinton wins or loses in november

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:41 AM on 03/03/2008

If the ridiculous conclusions you've come to above were true, that Republicans, Rove, etc. just love Hillary, then how do you explain history? How do you explain the 55 million dollars of taxpayer money spent on Ken Starr's witchhunt against the Clintons? How do you explain neocons foaming at the mouth for so many years doing all they could to bring the Clintons down? Hell, a lot of why you and others believe the shit you do about Hillary is due to the neocons savaging of her in the public mind. Neocons badly need for Hillary to get the nomination - you are hilarious!!! I have not heard of Republicans being encouraged by their party to cross over in the open primaries to vote for Hillary, but there are many examples of Repugs being instructed to crossover and vote for Obama, which I'm sure is happening in Texas as we speak.

And anyone who thinks CNN has been any more pro-Hillary than the 24/7 campaign for Obama that Huffington Post has sacrificed its credibility to become is simply delusional. Hillary went negative? Huffington Post - look in the mirror! This site has been campaigning as negatively as possible against Hillary for months, and disgracefully so.

Always someone else's fault.
Always a complaint coming from Camp Clinton.

The media reports on their behavior and criticisms, from Bill in SC to Hill shrieking "shame on you!" If you wanted a campaign centered only on the issues you should have only spoken about the issues. She's received as much of a pass as any candidate and has created her own negative headlines. It's time for Hill to take responsibility.

Lastly, a fair case could be made of the press being gentle with HIllary. Her "shame on you" and "pillow" comment at the debate were quite unpresidential. Had she been any other candidate now and certainly during the past, they'd have ended her hopes by focusing on the adolescent behavior of a want to be leader. The media has also not truly asked what constitutes 35 years of experience, her hidden tax returns or past Clinton scandals that could exhaust and distract the country once again.

200Beyond:

Always someone's else's fault, coming from the Clinton Camp you say?

Well what do you have to say about your LYING Obama Camp - with the NAFTA political rhetoric .. meeting, which he blithly denied - looking sweet as an angel - to the public, over and over again!

As for CNN they have become a pathetic excuse - of tabloid TV - and frankly - I have much more respect for tabloid TV - than CNN & MSNBC these days. They slap Americans in the face every time they spin and skew their reports into a pro Obama spoof! They must believe the public is deaf dumb and blind, or totally stupid, and accept their joke of a take on what is going on.

The idiot 'pundits' they call 'best political team blah blah blah, sound like bloody - Ann Coultier, wanna be's -. Anderson Cooper has become a cartoon of what he once was; and his smiley faced - side kick's, on 360, little cutesy pie facial ticks - have become very annoying. It's like they're auditioning for something else and seeing how it plays. Just ridiculous. Even Larry King has become a shell of what he was when Ted Turner ran the place. At least at that time - we were getting TRUE NEWS. Now it's nothing more than a bloody marketing machine, selling a lot of bull and very little truth.

--------
If the press is paying more attention to Obama's style it's because Clinton keeps bringing it up. The mainstream press's coverage of politics leaves much to be desired but Clinton doesn't whine when it works to her advantage/. Last month on MSNBC Chris ("Softball") Mathews asked Clinton about an Obama release that pointed out that Clinton dissed the Fla & Mich non-primary primaries back when the poll numbers were in her favor. Instead of answering the question Clinton guffawed with that (I'm REAL sorry for bringing this up...please don't think I'm biased) phony laugh & sidestepping the implication that she was talking out of both sides of her mouth. Instead of following up, Mr. Softball let her get away with the evasion.

I am genuinely surprised that no one has pointed the huge falsehood that this article is built on: Walter Shorenstein is not a media expert and he is not the founder of a press and media institute. Mr. Shorenstein is a long time real commercial real estate developer and the owner and manager of a slew of commercial real estate properties. While it is true that he gave a substantial sum of money to the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in honor of his late journalist daughter, Joan Shorenstein Barone, his gift to the graduate school does not make him either a founder of a media and press center or an expert on the media.

I am surprised, although only barely, that the Associated Press could concoct such a persona for Shorenstein and that it could get pass the copy editors at the New York Times and the Huffington Post.

I only need to read the first 40 (out of 286 at this moment) comments here to have my heart broken. What are we doing here people? This back stabbing and blaming and name-calling is taking us down a very slippery slope! Do we really want four more years of Republican anarchy?

I am an Obama supporter, and I want to believe in the hope he projects. Senator Clinton lost my support when she went negative, but by golly, I promised I would not do the same. If she earns the nomination, then we must ALL get behind her - or we will lose! And if she does not, we must ALL get behind Obama and stand together with one voice. We need to start NOW. Nobody is more pleased at this in-fighting than John McCain, Carl Rove and the Republican machine.

Country First.

Yeah, umm, I hate to lay this on you, but linking to articles in publications like TNR and NYT isn't really gonna advance your argument, bro. The TNR staff may still be somewhat divided, and thus capable of at least attempting objectivity, but NYT has become the propaganda organ of choice for the Clinton camp. Anything you read in that rag is going to have a very obvious slant. And how do you know what political affiliations these other posters have? did you go through and look at all of their profiles? How big a number is "many" ? And seriously, Hillary Clinton complaining about dirty campaign tricks? fuggedaboutit!

rflctammt, if Clinton is the nominee, or even elected President, we will all lose. Based on her record, she is not different from the neo-cons running the country now. The Repigs will win whether Small Mac or Clinton is elected. Both their campaigns are being run by the same people. The ONLY advantage to electing Clinton is that perhaps she might save SCOTUS. MIGHT!!! SAVE!!!! SCOTUS!!!!

The events of the last six weeks, including the unforgivable tantrums of former President Clinton, must have helped many to make up their minds - including this blogger.

But the events of the last two weeks confirmed one's 'judgment' but increased one's worries. If Senator Clinton wins, the indications are that she will be messing about with the Constitution to reach her ends the way she is playing her game to win the nomination: by innuendos, fables and sarcasm.

Senator Clinton will not get my vote. She certainly belongs a breed I don;t care to know!
