LOS ANGELES — Will Ferrell's basketball comedy "Semi-Pro" dribbled to the top of the weekend box office, but it fell short of his previous blockbuster openings in the sports spoof genre, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The New Line Cinema film, starring Ferrell as the owner of a fictional basketball franchise, grossed $15.3 million in its weekend debut. That was lackluster compared to Ferrell's 2006 NASCAR parody "Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," which opened at $47 million, and last year's figure skating comedy "Blades of Glory," which earned $33 million in its first weekend.

Box office analysts said "Semi-Pro" likely suffered because it was released during a normally slow season and was rated R, while "Talledega Nights" and "Blades of Glory" were rated PG-13.

"Will Ferrell is always a draw and audiences love him. But this particular weekend is not quite as strong as his earlier efforts," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office tracker Media By Numbers LLC.

New Line representatives declined to comment. Last week, media conglomerate Time Warner Inc. announced that New Line would be merged with its Warner Bros. Entertainment studio to cut costs and improve profitability.

Last weekend's top film, the Sony Pictures terrorism thriller "Vantage Point," dropped to second place with $13 million in ticket sales, bringing its two-week domestic total to $41 million.

Sony's new release "The Other Boleyn Girl" performed better than expected, opening at No. 4 with $8.3 million at 1,166 theaters. Its $7,118 per theater average outdistanced other movies in the marketplace.

The weekend's other opening, the Summit Entertainment fantasy romantic comedy "Penelope," debuted in eighth place with $4 million.

Box office revenues overall were down for the third straight week. The top 12 movies grossed $81 million, down 10 percent from last weekend and 25 percent from the same weekend in 2007.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Semi-Pro," $15.3 million.

2. "Vantage Point," $13 million.

3. "Spiderwick Chronicles," $8.8 million.

4. "The Other Boleyn Girl," $8.3 million

5. "Jumper," $7.6 million.

6. "Step Up 2 The Streets," $5.7 million.

7. "Fool's Gold," $4.7 million.

8. "Penelope," $4 million.

9. "No Country For Old Men," $4 million.

10. "Juno," $3.4 million.

Brian Regan is hilarious. Someone please put him in a movie.

All of the "mediocrities" seem to always rise to the top.
Look at the Chimp as President.
Ferrell is one of the most not-funny guys around.
It's all due to mass tastes in what people believe to be humor.
SNL only has a very few standouts, and I really can't think to remember any of their names.
Spade is one of the worst, along with his once side-kick chubby guy who died of a heart attack.
Oh well.

"Comics Unleashed", which can be seen on the Internet, has the best in new comics and new humor.
Also, it has the old standbys.
The veterans of the comedy world doing their old material as well as very funny new material.

He has NEVER been funny!!! Why does this guy even work in films, because he'll show off his flab and his beady eyes? He sucked on SNL and he sucks now.

Because he is not funny. I don't know what audience and producers saw in WIll Ferrell. His antics are as boring as Steve Martin. If you ever watched any of his movies, he relied heavily to the supporting casts to make him funny. His real breakout movie "Old School," where he was one of the supporting casts is certainly funny because of Vince Vaughn and his streaking moment. Before that, his stupid "Night at the Roxbury" was pathetic and after Old School, his approach to acting/comedy has been pretty consistent "boring!"

At least Steve Martin has talent.

What's shocking is that ANY of his movies have made money.......

I accidentally caught one on cable and was underwhelmed for the few minutes I could bear to watch..... this was funny? I suppose there's a lesson about the 'sophistication' - or lack thereof - in the sense of humor possessed by some Americans

I think old Will is funny but as with other famous comedians, he's lost his way, and the writing and conceptualization of movies is just pure crap. I guess they think we're monkeys since we elected George Bush at least one time.

The man has no talent. You put lipstick on a pig, but you can't make him act. No amount of PR is going to make up for a no talent like this guy. I watched on SNL many times skits which were so badly acted, it was pathetic. I kept hoping the man would be funny, and he just wasn't. Whoeever told this man he had ability, he needs to sue. Why and how his other films made any money at all, I have no idea. But this guy is just about as sad as it gets.

I've never been a fan of Will Ferrell. And he seriously needs to lay off the 70s-big-hair schtick.

Anchorman. Blades of Glory. Semi-Pro.

Hand me an air-sick bag.

He actually displayed some talent in the movie "Stranger Than Fiction", but then he wasn't playing for cheap laughs, nor was he playing 70s-big-hair schtick.

He needs to remember that.

Wow, the topless Will Farrell photo almost makes up for the Lindsay Lohan photos that were posted last week. Almost.

Does anyone actually find this guy funny? I sure don't - and I wish he would go away.

I don't. $15M is way too much for his usual stupid junk.

It is disappointing when your movie only opens at number 1. /sarcasm.

Huffpo did the same thing with The Golden Compass. I'm beginning to see a pattern here. I guess "mean" sells, eh?

I made that same odd observation several posts below. I'm finding it very diffucult to understand how a #1 opening at the box office is "disappointing" or a "failure."

You're not that bright are you...?

There's a difference between a $15M 'number one' and a $120M number one. One of them is definitely disappointing.

Oh, you mean raunchy comedian vehicles are finally out of gas? They've sucked for a decade, now. Therefore, It's no surprise to me that Semi Pro air balled. It's good to see movie goers are catching on to this, and that it's finally hurting at the box office. (So, it takes Americans about 10 years or so to realize they're wasting their money? Better late than never...)

Now maybe they can make real comedy films, with real writers, real directors with clever, funny story lines that haven't been regurgitated a thousand times over, and with real comedic actors; while leaving the second rate SNL lifers, whose arsenals anymore seem to be limited to putting on retarded costumes and mocking dated trends and cultures, on network television where they belong.

The only thing Ferrell has done that I enjoyed was his presidential parodies. If he gets too much rope, he hangs himself (him and Adam Sandler).

Sticking your hands under your armpits to make noises doesn't really strike me as genius.

He just needs to take a couple of years off...no more goofy hairdos and posters. Just go away for awhile.

Ferrell can be funny, but it seems like he's making the same movie over and over again. That's not funny.

I agree. This one looks like a remake of his last 4 movies. Only the names have been changes to protect the gullible.
