That Other "60 Minutes" Story: About 47 Million Uninsured Americans Desperate For Health Care

Hey, did you see that shocking video clip from 60 Minutes the other night? The one about an issue pivotal about the current Democratic campaign? The one that left you gaping at the screen, incredulous and offended that this sort of thing is still happening in this country? No, I'm not talking about that so-called "gotcha" moment where Hillary Clinton was asked — twice — if she believed Barack Obama was a Muslim and answered — twice — that no, she did not — I'm talking about the shocking report about America's uninsured, and how a relief organization that airdrops makeshift medical centers with doctors and medications in remote locations along the Amazon is finding an unquenchable demand here in the U.S.

Scott Pelley reported on Remote Area Medical ("RAM") and filmed a day at a RAM weekend clinic in Knoxville, Tenn. operated by RAM founder Stan Brock. Pelley traces the stories of various patients — many of which drove hundreds of miles to get treatment and camped out, sleeping in cars to make sure they got a spot in line, and many more who were turned away at the end of the weekend because there just wasn't enough time to see everyone who needed help. Per Pelley:

In the expedition to Knoxville, RAM saw 920 patients, made 500 pairs of glasses, did 94 mammograms, extracted 1,066 teeth and did 567 fillings. But when Stan Brock called the last number, 400 people were turned away.

According to the 60 Minutes report, Texas and Ohio alone have nearly seven million of America's 47 million uninsured residents. But, says Pelley, "that's just the start — millions more are underinsured, unable to pay their deductibles or get access to dental care." Here's another sampling:

PELLEY: You created this medical organization designed to go into Third World countries to go into remote places, and now doing 60 percent of your work in urban and rural America, what are we supposed to make of that?

BROCK: For the 50 million or so people in this country, the one thing that is on their mind is 'What if I have a catastrophic event, a car crash, a heart attack? Because I either have no health insurance or I'm underinsured.' And, so this is a very, very weighty thing to be thinking about, knowing that your family is in great jeopardy.

Sort of puts things in perspective, doesn't it? Pity that wasn't the big story that came out of 60 Minutes this week — so far, I haven't seen it mentioned once on cable news, though I've certainly seen a few debates on whether or not Hillary Clinton said in enough ways that she didn't believe that Barack Obama was a Muslim.

Here's the full segment (thanks to CBS News for providing the embed code). Definitely worth a watch.

I was a small business owner until 3 weeks ago. My wife went into the hospital twice last year. We couldnt afford insurance at the time. However, we are now paying the price. We lost our business, our home and everything we have. We are moving to our daughters basemaent next week. We are 60 and 65 years old. I watched 60 minutes and cried for my country. If we get back on our feet Im moving to Canada. Bush has distroyed our country.

If people didn't watch "Sicko" before this piece, they should now. NONE of the remaining presidential candidates are offering healthcare- only "affordable healthcoverage". As long as the insurance companies are in control, nothing will change. Notice how many of the people who came actually had healthcoverage, but couldn't afford the healthcare co-pays. Thank God for Stan Brock, and RAM. Maybe with more stories on this crisis, others will step up and lend a hand. This is an issue that won't go away overnight, and given our economy, stands only to worsen.

Rachel, what makes you think that your girl Hillary, who is "the second largest recipient [in the Senate] of health care money" ("Sicko") would do a damned thing about health care?

Great post, Rachel.

I understand your frustration that the piece on the Democratic race has overshadowed it in coverage.

However, by the same token, with a cable/network news media obsessed with political horse races, mindless celebrity fluff, and lurid murder cases, I'm just grateful, not to mention pleasantly surprised, that a piece this substantive about the American health care crisis made it on the air AT ALL.

Thanks for calling our attention to it.

Stan Brock should be given the highest honours our country can bestow.

Presidential Medal of Freedom

Talk about a true American hero.

I will send RAM a check this week, and next, and the next, until there is no longer a need.

Forcing people to give money to the big insurance companies, for inadequate coverage, at very high prices, is no "solution" to the health care crisis. But this, of course, is Hillary Clinton's "plan".

Hillary spouts the "populist" words, but her policies and "solutions" are strictly designed to benefit her corporate backers.

It's amazing to me how easily taken in many of her backers are.

How about this for a scenario?

Instead of just putting a Democrat in the White House, why don't we also try to give the country the biggest Democratic congressional landslide this side of 1932? Then, let's just see that new Congress pass the single-payer bill that is currently before the House and DARE whoever is president, whether Clinton or Obama, to veto it?

My view is that neither Clinton nor Obama would want to go down in history as being the Democratic president who stood in the way of health care reform and that they would sign it.

That's why I think this debate over who has the best health care plan is a bit of a fraud. This ball is completely in Congress' court. If they run with it, the next Democratic president will have no choice but to get in line with them.

The president-elect will quickly realize that the number one problem is not that Americans can't afford health care -- it's that they can't afford anything, because their income is evaporating in terms of both lost jobs and a dollar that is racing toward worthlessness. They'll be hard put to pay for food and gasoline, never mind Grandma's emphysema treatments.

Hey, they were still in the Third World. That is Bush's singular accomplishment: the downgrading of America and the degrading of Americans.

Still He dances On!

If you have a heart, you can't watch the 60 Minutes segment and not think it is time for this country to find a way to provide healthcare for all Americans.

Richard "The Crook" Nixon championed our current for profit HMO based healthcare plan.
That fact alone should tell us its not good for America!

As soon as they made healthcare in this country a 'for profit' endeavor, the patient's wellbeing took a back seat to the stock holder's wellbeing.
This is why in the past 7 years healthcare costs have gone up a mind boggling 98%.
This is why even though we pay more for our healthcare than any other nation on Earth; our healthcare ranking is just above Slovenia's.
This is why you pretty much have to prove to Healthcare Insurers that you are so healthy that you will never need the healthcare you pay for.
This is why we have millions of Americans who are just one visit to the hospital away from being homeless.
But fret not all those who have to choose between healthcare and eating, America is a Christian nation...so just pray you won’t get sick or injured.

Figuring out how to break the lock corporations have on all of our lives will almost be mission impossible as more comes information comes out. Watching this piece really slams home the human cost being extracted from our country and should underscore the national imperative to undertake this mission and begin healing the damage. I believe that the true numbers of un- and under-insured in this country are being depressed by the same folks that would rather you buy Viagra and shut the hell up. We need to face up to the fact that worrying about a 4 hour erection is much less important than seeing clearly, being cancer-free, or raising well children. How much good could RAM do with the advertising budget for Cialas for one year?

When we become a third world country, who will come to our aide? China? Canada?

A little town 30 miles from a Medical School in Tennessse can't keep a Doctor. The school was built at tax payer expense to make sure that Tennessse Citzens could have a local doctor.

THEY DON'T 10 YEARS LATER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every "representative" of the people in Washington should have a copy of this piece. Truly shocking. While all this is going on, the MORON in the WH is dancing and acting like the idiot he is, waiting to endorse McCain. People who vote for McCain, or any out-of-touch repub. should be ashamed of themselves. We watched in shock as more and more people showed up. Imagine all the people who wanted to be there, but had no transportation? "Land of the free, home of the brave"????? I wonder how many of these people had served in the military at one time, or had relatives killed in the line of duty?? It was an absolute disgrace. People overseas who have the luxury of National Health Services must wonder what is wrong with the Americans, who spend BILLIONS on invading a sovereign nation for their oil, but neglect the citizens who pay taxes.

Or were, in 2000 and 2004.

I have most of my family living in England. The National Health Service works just great for them. No waiting for treatmant. No worrying about losing everything they ever worked for if a catastrophic illness hits. I lived under that system, and the doctor came to the house when my 4 year old daughter had measles. Contact me, I will put you in touch with one of my relatives, they can INFORM you about what it is REALLY like.

Pssst Einstein,
In case y'all hadn't heard, our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, police, fire and highway departments as well as our public schools and libraries not to mention the CDC, and the list goes on and on are all Commie entities.
Ya' see we as a "Community" pool our money to fund these worthwhile entities.
All we REAL AMERICANS are saying is that because we do fund all these things, shouldn't good old Uncle Sam have our backs WHEN we get sick or injured?
Or do you think a Board of Directors should determine how to make money off our misery?
Pedro...its uninformed hate mongers like Y'ALL that make America, once a beacon of Liberty in the World, just another run-of-the-mill countries run by a gutless born to privilege KKKoward like AWOL Bush!
Grow up, and read a newspaper.

Yes, those countries have better health care than we do. You are correct, pedrothemigrant.

Colmore put it perfectly: "People overseas who have the luxury of National Health Services must wonder what is wrong with the Americans, who spend BILLIONS on invading a sovereign nation for their oil, but neglect the citizens who pay taxes."

Our healthcare system is so broken, Our democracy is so broken. This country had such promise, but look where we are now. It's so sad.

But at least the oil companies and the drug companies are making record profits. And that's all that counts in America, isn't it??
