UPDATE: Samantha Power speaks out to Irish news outlet RTE:

Of course I regret them, I can't even believe they came out of my mouth. The campaign was getting very tense, and I -- in every public appearance I've ever made talking about Senator Clinton, I have sung her praises as the leader she's been, the intellect. She's also incredibly warm, funny. I've spent time with her. I think that I just had a very weak moment in seeing some of the tactics, it seems, that were getting employed. I was just afraid really that the campaign would not stay at the level it had been on and I let out in a wave of frustration.

There's more, watch it:

UPDATE: Obama supporter and former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski disagrees with Power's decision to resign: "I think an expression of regret for using an inappropriate description of Senator Clinton should have sufficed. And I don't think she should have resigned."

UPDATE: Here's a discussion with Gerri Peev, the interviewer who reported on Power's comments about Sen. Clinton:

wwil

UPDATE: Sam Stein has written about the story of Power's rise --and subsequent fall -- in the political arena:

That Obama could bring her on board -- he was, Power said, the first government official to have ever called her -- was emblematic of the different style of politics that the Illinois senator was promising to represent. Far from a down-the-line liberal on international affairs, Power was known for her innovative (if not self-reflectively painful) analysis. On the Rwanda genocide, she concluded that U.S. officials had worked to ignore the problem, not failed to address it. On the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, she once advocated (though later recanted) spending billions of dollars and sending a military force to help create a Palestinian state next to Israel.

The whole piece is worth a read.

UPDATE: Obama aide and Pulitzer Prize winner Samantha Power has resigned.

"With deep regret, I am resigning from my role as an advisor the Obama campaign effective today. Last Monday, I made inexcusable remarks that are at marked variance from my oft-stated admiration for Senator Clinton and from the spirit, tenor, and purpose of the Obama campaign. And I extend my deepest apologies to Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, and the remarkable team I have worked with over these long 14 months," Power said in a statement.

Before the announcement was made, several reporters on a Clinton campaign conference call noted that there had been personal attacks from the Clinton campaign as well, including references to Obama's youthful drug use and the argument, made on Thursday, that the Illinois Senator's tactics were similar to Ken Starr's.

In response, Clinton's spokesperson Howard Wolfson denied that he had directly compared Obama to Starr, a despised figure in Democratic circles. He also argued that those Clinton surrogates who had "crossed the line" had been asked to leave the campaign.

"Had I or anyone on this campaign referred to Senator Obama using the word that Samantha Power used, we would not be on the campaign this morning," he said.

David Corn of Mother Jones comments:

Non-News Flash: Aides to presidential candidates routinely refer to the competition in harsh terms, particularly when they talk to reporters off the record. More than once, a top Clinton person has told me that s/he believes Obama is a self-righteous fraud--or worse. It was, of course, always off the record. But if I had reported any of these remarks, I could have gotten the pop The Scotsman has received for disclosing Power's comment.

The Clinton people do deserve chutzpah points for trying to turn this nothing-burger into a full-course feast. During a conference call with reporters yesterday, Clinton's top spinner, Howard Wolfson, compared Obama and his aides to Kenneth Starr because they dared to question Clinton's refusal to release her income taxes. (In The Washington Post, Dana Milbank credited me with asking the question that prompted the Ken Starr remark --a quip obviously locked and loaded before the call.) The comparison was ridiculous. But in Democratic circles, there's not much of a bigger slur than, Hey, you're Ken Starr! For Democrats, Starr is the functional equivalent of a monster.

So the Clinton crowd does not have the moral high ground in this round. Yet what was the net result? Power, a talented journalist and thinker who gives a damn about genocides (certainly more so than Bill Clinton did during the Rwanda nightmare), was forced off Obama's campaign.

+++

UPDATE: During a conference call on Friday, Clinton supporters called for Power's resignation:

On a conference call with reporters this morning, congressional supporters of Hillary Clinton demanded that Obama force adviser Samantha Power out of his camapign.

"We're here today to ask Senator Obama to ask Samantha Power not to be part of his campaign," said Rep. Nita Lowey of New York, responding to the remark by Power -- a foreign policy adviser to Obama and expert on international human rights. "It's really a test for Obama, a test of character," she said.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of Florida called the comment and other Power remarks "a torrent of negative personal attacks."

And Rep. Greg Meeks of New York called Power's words "personal character assassination."

"Senator Obama needs to stand up and to publicly say that this person will no longer participate in his campaign," Meeks said.

Power, a policy advisor, isn't on staff.

UPDATE: Samantha Power has apologized for her comments:

"It is wrong for anyone to pursue this campaign in such negative and personal terms," she said. "I apologize to Senator Clinton and to Senator Obama, who has made very clear that these kinds of expressions should have no place in American politics."

Obama's campaign also issued a statement from Bill Burton's the campaign's spokesman, who said: "Sen. Obama decries such characterizations which have no place in this campaign."

+++

In an unguarded moment during an interview with The Scotsmen, Obama aide Samantha Power shared some harsh words about Hillary Clinton:

"We f***** up in Ohio," she admitted. "In Ohio, they are obsessed and Hillary is going to town on it, because she knows Ohio's the only place they can win.

"She is a monster, too - that is off the record - she is stooping to anything," Ms Power said, hastily trying to withdraw her remark.

Ms Power said of the Clinton campaign: "Here, it looks like desperation. I hope it looks like desperation there, too.

"You just look at her and think, 'Ergh'. But if you are poor and she is telling you some story about how Obama is going to take your job away, maybe it will be more effective. The amount of deceit she has put forward is really unattractive."

In the LA Times Opinion section..a great article by Leslie Bennetts; "Go Away Why Should She" on how misogynistic mostly male punditry, and many other men to include radio personalities are to Hillary Clinton... Not only is Clinton beyond the age when our patriarchal culture deems women to have lost most of their worthwhile value. There are few things this country is less interested in than aging women. America requires that females be or at least or appear sexually desireable. Once they have passed the age of facile objectification, and commodification they're supposed to disappear. and to show you what I mean..
in case we missed the memo..
Rush Limbaugh..recently spelled it all out for us. After observing that aging makes men look more authoritative, accomplished and distinguished, he then proceeded in registering his own distaste about the prospect of having to watch Hillary Clinton shrivel up in the whitehouse.
and said: Will america want to watch a woman get older before their eyes on a daily basis? Oh the horror!
In the world of Limbaugh witnessing such a spectacle would be much too repellant for the squeamish american electorate (although it would presumably pose no problem to watch John McCain. who would be the oldest president if elected. How misogynistic is that?

Younger women should sit up and take notice, as they won't be young forever. Girls may not have felt it yet, but twice as many american women age 75 and older live in poverty compared with men.

Younger women struggle to manage work and their family with little or no help from our government; although 163 countries give women paid leave with the birth of a child , the United States DOES NOT!!!!!!

So far ,women have helped elect a long series of men who paid lip service to family values while doing virtually nothing to improve the lot of this nation's women and children.

Older women are getting fed up, but it seems younger women aren't noticing it enough yet to be affected.
Robin Morgan pointed out in a recent essay-Every organized patriarchal religion works overtime to contribute its own brand of misogyny" (Robin Morgan also noted). T shirts reading "If only Hillary had married OJ instead" and south park about a terrorists secreting a bomb in Clinton's vagina. This is sociopathic just plain woman-hating. If it were the jews we would recognize it instantly as anti-semitic propaganda.....wake up!
Whether black or white men count more than women, even in our own government. An african american man got the vote before any women of any race ever got the vote. It seems women have always been fighting an uphill battle.....and the physically strongest prevail like in the caveman days.

Quit seeing people as the demographic they "belong" to! When you get to the level of president, you're down to a demographic of one unique person. Sure, their demos inform the candidates, but they don't define or confine them. I'm sick of all the MSM focus on demographics. It's like they're trying to teach America to be hopeless victims of sexism and racism and ageism and income-ism and regionism. I'm not even like my own sisters, for Pete's sake.

The source for the picture of Obama visiting Africa and wearing traditional garb was found to be a scan from a London Tabloid a week prior to it magically showing up at the Drudge Report and then blogged to death on politico.com known for it's stellar journalistic research. Of course, the source of the pictures must be from the Clinton campaign, so no one actually did their research. Oops! Just too easy to subscribe it to the "Monster."

Why would the Clinton campaign flaunt one of his strongest attributes? Senator Clinton has pictures of her wearing the traditional garb of countries she's visited, but such pictures don't have the same multi-cultural impact and appeal as Senator Obama since he still has family in Africa. Why do the favor for his campaign, by promoting one of his great strengths? The next time it rains and you are caught outside without your umbrella, I'm sure you'll suspect Hillary Clinton's staffers or volunteers of a conspiracy. I remember Republicans using pictures of Hillary Rodham at feminist rallies and civil rights marches as inflammatory material to keep Bill from getting elected as Governor of Arkansas and even later, from winning the White House in 92'. They tried to paint her as a feminist hippie with none of the traditional family values we all expect from our first ladies, but she countered by owning it rather than apologizing for her committment to women's and civil rights.

Now, as far as Samantha Powers resignation, it is a shame but that decision was between her and Senator Obama and Senator Clinton is well within reason to expect nothing less than a suspension for a hateful characterization coming from one of his top advisors. Once the heat dies down, she'll be back, as she is a very capable and ambitious woman who knows a good ticket when she sees one. Perhaps she is using Obama's platform to help launch her own career.

The two intern and young staffers for the Clinton campaign who inappropriately stated Senator Obama was a muslim were immediately fired. As a volunteer for Hillary's campaign in Texas, each and every one of us saw ourselves as ambassadors of our party first and supporters of Hillary second, and if a casual voter ever mentioned they wouldn't vote for a muslim, we firmly corrected them that Senator Obama was definately not, and stated that we have something called freedom of religion. We are not about divisive misinformation within our own party as it is destructive and plays to the worst fears in people. We will be a united party but let's allow all the states to weigh in their voice so that for the first time in many years, a complete candidacy is sent forth into the General election.

Samantha, you have been proven right! SNL ran a sketch last night of Hillary Clinton answering the phone in her bedroom at 3AM. She looked absolutely horrific! America should demand your reinstatement!

Seriously though, Hillary Clinton is a #%$&%! You are only guilty of saying what everyone is thinking.

Those who read all they could regarding the Clintons rise to power and days in the White House would have to agree ... the lady is somewhat a Monster much of the time ... A T-Rex in bad pant suits. Hillary considers her time in the White House as time that SHE ran the country ... yet no one elected her. Evita comes to mind.

Hillary is NOW claiming that McCain is BETTER for America than Obama. And that Obama is incapable of answering a telephone at 3AM! Her ego has no bounds. She is getting HUGE support from Rush Limbaugh and the GOP and she backed the Iraq invasion ... the GOP has been counting on Hillary and is equally desperate. She has been bought by special interests and is no better than most Republicans at this point. Let McCain pair up with for then!!!

Yes, she will use tears and cry and pull all types of antics like a child ... and for some, this crap actually works but daily, more and more are waking up to the fact that Obama is MUCH better for our nation and our world.

No one should have resigned over the Monster remark. Hillary is known as a voracious Washington animal and that NO ONE gets in the way of a Monster. A Monster feels entitles to all it sees. Hillary has been referred to as Monster for years in Washington ... why a big deal now? She is being seen for what she has made of herself is all.

Obama ... please do NOT consider Hillary as a running mate not matter how PUSHY Bill is ... Edwards and others make much more sense for that position and for your effectiveness in the White House.

Best to you Obama!

I'd put my money that >50% would say YES!

Power has been a disaster from the jump. Some months ago she wrote a patronizing squib in which she kept repeating, essentially, "Obama new--good! Hillary old--bad!" Also, wasn't she the author of Obama's really stupid statement about how he'd invade Pakistan? She may have written a dynamite book about genocide, but I tremble to think what would happen if she actually were driving foreign policy. Not only is Obama wet behind the ears; he's desperate for a really flashy "new" foreign policy stance, and Power has demonstrated that all too well.
12:25 AM on 03/09/2008
Non story. She should not have quit. Wolfson didn't tender a resignation, nor was he asked to, for calling Obama Ken Starr. Obama better toughen up now or he's going to lose.
12:11 AM on 03/09/2008
Once again, whenever Truth is spoken to power, there is always backlash. Powers was 99.99% correct Mrs. Clinton is not only a monster but Lucifer's twin sister.

FOR YOU DEMOCRACY by WALT WHITMAN

Come, I will make the continent indissoluble,
I will make the most splendid race the sun ever shone upon,
I will make divine magnetic lands,
With love of comrades,
With the life-long love of comrades

I will plant companionship thick as trees along all the rivers of Amerca,
and along he shores of the great lakes, and all over the praries,
I will make inseparable cities with their arms about each other's necks,
By the love of comrades,
By the manly love of comrades.

For you these from me, O Democracy, to serve you ma femme!
For you, for you I am trilling these songs.
