SHANGHAI, China — China will be stricter on foreign performers after Icelandic singer Bjork shouted "Tibet! Tibet!" at the end of her concert in Shanghai this week, the government said Friday.

A statement by China's Culture Ministry said Bjork's outburst "broke Chinese law and hurt Chinese people's feelings."

Bjork shouted "Tibet!" after a passionate performance of her song "Declare Independence" on Sunday. The outburst drew rare public attention inside China to Beijing's often harsh rule over the Himalayan region.

The statement, posted on the Culture Ministry's Web site, also said "there is no country that admits that Tibet is an 'independent country.'"

Bjork has performed the song to support other independence movements in the past. She dedicated the song to Kosovo while performing last month in Japan. The lyrics include the phrase "Raise your flag!"

China's 58-year rule over Tibet has drawn frequent condemnation from foreign governments and activists, often inciting a prickly nationalism among the Chinese government and ordinary people. Many Tibetans consider the exiled Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama as their rightful leader.

I, for one, am very glad that the 2008 Olympics are in China. The government is going to crap themselves trying to contain and silence people from all over the rest of the world who have the most public stage to protest.

I think the "black fist" protest of 1968 will pale (no pun intended) in comparison to what you'll see in Beijing.

"The Chinese people's feelings were hurt" according to the Chinese govt. These govt. spokespeople are full of shit and could care less. We should have nothing to do with China.

I think the Chinese had no idea what she was on about, until the press the next day said something about it. They would have pulled the switch and shut the power off in the middle of the show.

Free Tibet Now ! Boycott the Olympics !

(... and people of middle America, say Hi to your replacements.)

Good for her and for very much keeping with her punk roots.

It's not as sly, cute, and subtle as the oft-maligned swan dress, but it's elegant in its own right. Bless you, Bjor.! You have the power to make the poor Baby China cry.

Exactly how can the Chinese government prevent any future performers from saying Tibet?

Simply by not allowing any future performers into China.

Björk is one of the truly great musical artists in the world today, who also happens to be blessed with the most transcendent voice ever. I am glad she did what she did. It's not a big surprise though, since she took part in the Free Tibet concerts of about a decade ago. And, I'm thinking this is far more about the tender sensibilities of the brutish Mainland China government that the "Chinese people". Not a big surprise though.

America has seen Björk as an eccentric figure, making fun of her for her clothes and appearance, but this woman is one of the truly amazing human beings in the world today. And once again, she stands against stupidity, brutality and intolerance! Iceland should be proud!

"transcendent voice ever?"

Hardly, her voice, even with all the reverb and Pro tools still sounds like a cross between Yoko Ono and Pekingese on helium. I like her experimentation with different genres but her voice, hmm....

Business perfection & impossible prosperity is the point. Suppression has freedoms. We have sons who control Congress. Freedoms start baby sons. You, like China, lost business.

Transcendent concerts surprise America. Human stupidity should be free. I'm tender of brutish. China has fun clothes and amazing beings. The proud voice did part-concerts. The government has this amazing intolerance to transcendent surprise.

It is interesting to see the cultural changes and growing pains experienced by China as they begin to truly modernize their country. Thye are so advanced in certain areas and very "behind the times" in others. It is also great to see someone like Bjork stick up for the people of Tibet.

I wonder if Chinese people's feelings are hurt when the Chinese government puts them in prison labor camps because of their thought crimes? Can't you just smell the spirit of freedom, independence and good will that the Olympic games bring to China?

I wonder if American people's feelings are hurt when the American government puts them in prison camps because of their thought crimes - under the provisions of the Military Commissions Act? Can't you just smell the spirit of freedom, independence, habeas corpus, and good will that the recent Super Bowl game didn't bring to The United States?

Look IRemember... I know THIS country's gone to hell in a handcart... but I still have hope in our founding principles and the spirit of true American patriots who can begin to reverse the damage here. If I didn't believe this, believe you me I would've opened my carotid by now, because if there's no hope in this country we're all fucked. But if you believe, as fucked up as this country is, that we're on par with the despotic, inhumane Communist/Capitalist three-ring goat screw that is China, then you're delusional. We need to take some pointers from some of our Chinese brethren and start standing in front of some tanks.

You have a point there. Thanks to big business who longingly looks at China like a bastion of perfection and prosperity, good ole China population suppression & control has come to a Congress near you. Once freedoms are lost it is almost impossible to get them back.

So, when do we start tossing our baby girls in the orphanages/alleyways to have more business-titan sons? Can't wait. Yea haw

Go Bjork!! I have figured all along it was and will be impossible (I hope) for China to silence concern over Tibet in the Olympics. I am very sad that the Olympics are even being held in China for this reason. However I truly hope that this is just the beginning. I have many Tibetan friends, I have also had the pleasure to meet with and share ceremonies with His Holiness the Dali Lama (1986). My friends from Tibet are such sweet and good people. I became friends with them while I was living in NYC, where there is a moderate-sized community of Tibet exiles. It has been a matter of deep sorrow that so few (as in none) nations will oficially stand up to the Chinese on this issue. For those of you who may not know it, the subversion of Tibet by China has been brutal, bloody, criminal and as nasty as possible. These days there is less violence but the Chinese continue to flood Tibet with Chinese national citizens. The world lost an unimaginable treasure when Tibet, the last of the old kingdoms, went down under the Chinese bullets and boots. The disgraceful treatment of Tibet by the Chinese and the world community undermines and adds a corrupt element to everything we do with the Chinese. I look forward to hoping for numerous spontaneous outbursts like this all over the Chinese "feelings" in the time up to the Olympics.

China is nothing more than an Asian version of Milton Friedman's neoliberalism: wealth for the few, penury and wage slavery for the huge majority, and oppression for the Tibetans. But of course, Bush's demonic administration supports China's policies with a wink of the eye.

It's far from any neo-liberalism. That ideology espoused essentially total govt. hands off the free market, elimination of social programs, and the like. Just the opposite of a state controlled socialist economy that is a large portion of China's makeup.

But the effects you outlined are basically correct, so your point is taken. By the way, Asian countries all around (except Singapore) are this way to one degree or another. They don't need to hide behind neo-liberal economics to rip off the resources of an Asian country. They just ... do it.

It's rapidly happening in your country too (if you're from the U.S. that is) while the city sleeps. In a much more sophisticated fashion that is not visible to the mAsses.

So PferdGeist,

This kind of comment can only come form some who has never been to China, and badly out of touch of with Chinese Zeitgeist.
I am a socialist, but Mao's version of socialism was really the continuation of quasi-feudal system under a disguise of socialism.

Wage slavery? Many people around the world are grateful receiving wages, any wages.

China performed a miracle feeding and education and clothing the teeming billions.
And now they are managing an EXTREMELY successful, wise and incremental transition to mercantile society. Compare that to the slash-and burn model of Post Soviet republics, esp. the chaotic Yeltsin years.

So keep your your middle-class bourgeois liberal preoccupations to yourself.

Regarding TIbet. It IS unfortunate to the extreme.
However, with the train line opening, anyone who been to Lhasa will tell you that assimilation of this truly holy region is already fait accompli. What with gay bars, karaoke and shopping malls.

Ah, where is Milarepa when we need him.

MagisterLudi,

You are out of touch with China if you think that China's transition to a mercantile society will benefit the vast majority of the Chinese. China is creating a wealth structure of an super rich few and impoverished billions. They will not relinquish power or money to the masses. The violence against those who wish for democracy in China will continue until it becomes too frequent and harsh and then the revolution will follow. It is inevitable that the Chinese police state will collapse.

You are the foolish man who would offer his freedom for trade. It is the bargain China has made and you are less of a man to endorse it. 1776
